From Dadar To Reshimbagh, Political Groundwork Begins For Maharashtra Civic Polls

NDTVa day ago

Mumbai:
As civic polls draw near in Maharashtra, political parties have shifted into full gear, holding internal meetings, strategy camps, and grassroots outreach programmes - some across the state, others concentrated in their traditional strongholds.
While the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) remains intact at the state level, there is still no clarity on whether the Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP (Sharad Pawar), and Congress will contest the municipal elections together. On the ground, however, each party is mobilising its cadre independently.
On the other side, the Mahayuti alliance has signalled its intention to work together where necessary, but has also underlined that individual parties will prioritise giving opportunities to their local workers.
NCP (Sharad Pawar) Holds 'Sankalp Shibir' In Mumbai
Five days after its grand celebration marking 26 years since its founding, the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar) held a day-long Sankalp Shibir in Mumbai's Ghatkopar. The event was widely seen as an effort to assert the party's presence in Mumbai - a city where it has limited electoral strength on its own. But as youth wing leader Fahadh Ahmed put it, "We will make sure the Mayor of the city is made with the help of NCP (SP)."
Sharad Pawar addressed party functionaries from Mumbai, urging them to stay united and prepare for the political struggle ahead.
"This camp has been organised today to prepare collectively for the upcoming political struggle," he said. Reflecting on recent election results, he added, "We saw good success in the Lok Sabha elections, but the same was not reflected in the Vidhan Sabha."
Mr Pawar acknowledged public suspicion around the electoral process and emphasised that local leaders must take the lead: "We are preparing to face the Mumbai municipal elections... Whatever decision Rakhi Jadhav takes, we will stand firmly behind her."
The party has launched a new ideological slogan - "Tukaram vs Nathuram" - to underscore its message ahead of the campaign. The shibir is also seen as a response to recent local-level defections to the rival NCP faction.
Jayant Patil, meanwhile, attacked the BJP for allegedly shifting key projects out of Mumbai.
"The IFSC Centre planned for BKC was shifted overnight to Gujarat... the National Marine Police Security and NSG centres were also moved," he said.
Mr Patil alleged attempts to weaken Mumbai financially, claiming the patent office headquarters had been moved to Delhi.
He also criticised the state government and BMC over stalled civic works and waterlogging issues.
"Despite Rs 1,000 crore spent, the city continues to face waterlogging," he said, adding that BEST's fleet had reduced drastically even as ticket prices rose.
Mr Patil called on workers to prepare for elections at the ward level, stressing the need for new faces and active social media engagement. "We haven't decided on MVA yet - we may fight together or separately," he said, adding that internal groundwork must begin regardless.
Shiv Sena (UBT) Pushes Grassroots Preparedness
Shiv Sena (UBT), a key MVA partner, has also begun preparations with a meeting of all Shakha Pramukhs. Party leader Uddhav Thackeray took stock of organisational readiness and instructed local heads to start immediate outreach.
Each ward-level leader has been directed to reach out to at least 300 households, strengthen booth-level structures, and highlight the difference between the party's past governance and the current administration.
With BMC elections happening after seven years, the party is aiming for a complete majority and a symbolic "saffron flag over the corporation." Internal meetings, voter list audits, inter-shakha coordination, and field visits by deputy mayor-responsible units are now underway. The party is focusing on its past governance record - particularly in water supply, health, sanitation, education, and the delivery of major projects like the Coastal Road.
BJP-RSS Coordination Meeting Focuses On Cadre Training
On the other side, BJP leaders including Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, and state president Chandrashekhar Bawankule attended a lengthy coordination meeting with the RSS at Smriti Mandir in Nagpur.
The meeting, which lasted for over four hours, included detailed discussions on how to prepare party workers for the upcoming local body elections.
A key focus was the "Ghar Chalo" campaign - an outreach effort to take state and central schemes to every household. Training BJP workers on scheme delivery and communication was prioritised, with an emphasis on public awareness.
Given that this year marks the RSS centenary, the gathering also deliberated on "Panch Parivartan" (Five Transformations) including social harmony, citizen duties, family values, environmental consciousness, and Sanskrit promotion. Upcoming programmes like "Yuva Samvad" (Youth Dialogue) and continued cadre strengthening were also discussed.

"Way double-engine govt has started working in Delhi is commendable": CM Rekha Gupta

New Delhi [India], June 16 (ANI): Stressing that there will be more progress in the national capital in the coming days, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said on Monday said that the Centre has supported the Delhi government in building world-class infrastructure in the city, further adding that the Central government is working 'shoulder to shoulder' with her administration. Delhi CM Gupta, along with Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, inaugurated an exhibition highlighting 11 years of the NDA government and 100 days of the current Delhi government. Speaking to the media, CM Gupta said, 'Today, I am very happy that the Central Government has completed 11 years and the Delhi Government has completed 100 days, and the way the double-engine government has started working in Delhi is commendable. The Centre has always worked a lot for Delhi, but unfortunately, the previous government neither recognised their efforts nor gave them credit.' 'However, today, when we look at the progress, we have received significant support from the Centre in building world-class infrastructure in Delhi. Through roadways alone, we received support worth Rs 1.25 lakh crore. Similarly, major schemes like Ayushman Bharat, which were previously not implemented here, have now been supported by the Centre. We have opened Arogya Mandirs (health centres). In every project, the Centre is working shoulder to shoulder with Delhi,' Rekha Gupta added. Drawing a comparison with the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, the Delhi CM said that the difference now is that no one is blaming each other anymore, and everything seems more organised. 'In Delhi, whatever targets we have taken up, be it air pollution, cleaning the Yamuna, tackling garbage mountains, or improving water and electricity, there will be more progress and better work done on all fronts,' she emphasised. Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, speaking on the occasion, said that the 'triple-engine' government --at the Centre, in Delhi, and in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) --is now well-positioned to deliver on promises of development. 'I've seen Delhi evolve since just after partition, when the city's population was around 11-12 lakh. After successive waves of migration, the population has now crossed over 2 crore. You can see the results of the triple-engine government we now have--at the Centre, in Delhi, and in the MCD. With PM Modi's 11 years of governance and the support of local bodies, we have no excuses left. We must now deliver on the promises of development and ensure Delhi gets what it rightfully deserves. When PM Modi took charge in 2014, India's GDP was 2 trillion dollars. Today, it has reached 4 trillion dollars,' he said. Earlier on Sunday, Rekha Gupta expressed confidence that the Haryana government would continue extending full cooperation in the development of the national capital. Speaking to mediapersons in Haryana's Karnal, CM Gupta said, '... I believe that Delhi will keep getting full cooperation from the state of Haryana... Some forces are acting like an eclipse on the state of Punjab, which is why neither Punjab is able to develop nor maintain proper coordination with other states.' Chief Minister Gupta chaired a high-level meeting on Saturday to strengthen the city's real estate system and make it more transparent, efficient, and development-focused, according to an official statement. "Modi govt trying to destroy MNREGA--lifeline of the poor by torturing them": Mallikarjun Kharge

New Delhi [India], June 16 (ANI): Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was trying to destroy the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act. (MNREGA) In a post on social media X, Kharge wrote that the Modi government's cutting down the limit of MNREGA expenditure was a 'crime against the Constitution.' 'The Modi government is trying to destroy MNREGA, the lifeline of the poor, by torturing them. The Modi government has now fixed the limit of MNREGA expenditure at 60% for the first 6 months of the year. Cutting down MNREGA, which ensures the legal right to WORK under the Constitution, is a crime against the Constitution,' the post read. Kharge further, in his post, raised questions on the Modi government's decision on MNREGA. He questioned if the Modi government was doing this to snatch Rs 25,000 crore from the pockets of the poor. Kharge also questioned the result of the imposition of the expenditure capacity and the result of the same on the poor dependent on the scheme. The Congress President also questioned what the consequences would be if the limits were crossed. 'Is the Modi government doing this only because it wants to snatch about 25,000 crores from the pockets of the poor, which it has to spend separately in the next financial year every year when the demand is high at the end of the year? Since MGNREGA is a demand-driven scheme, what happens if there is a surge in demand during the first half in case of disasters or adverse weather conditions? Will not imposing such a cap hurt the poor who depend on MGNREGA for their livelihood? What happens if the limit is crossed? Will states be forced to deny employment despite demand, or will workers have to work without payment over time?' the post read. Calling the Modi government 'anti-poor', Kharge questioned why the government was hell-bent on oppressing the MNREGA workers. 'Is it not true that, according to a recent report, only 7% of families have received the promised 100 days of work? (Lib Tech, as of 21 May) Why were nearly 7 crore registered workers excluded from MNREGA on the condition of AADHAAR-based payment? Why was the MNREGA budget allocated the least in the total budget in 10 years? Why is the anti-poor Modi government hell-bent on oppressing MNREGA workers?' he further wrote in the post. The Congress President further stated that the Congress government would vehemently oppose the axe of stopping the expenditure on MNREGA, claiming that it was a severe blow inflicted by the Modi government on the lives of the poor. He further stated that the Congress demanded a minimum wage of Rs 400 per day fixed for MNREGA workers and employment of 150 days. 'The axe of stopping expenditure on MNREGA is a severe blow inflicted by the Modi government on the lives of every poor! The Congress party will vehemently oppose this. We are firm on our two demands - First, a minimum wage of 400 per day should be fixed for MNREGA workers. Second, there should be employment for at least 150 days in a year,' the post further read. "Govt jobs were being auctioned before 2017": UP CM Yogi Adityanath slams Samajwadi Party

Ambedkar Nagar (Uttar Pradesh) [India], June 16 (ANI): Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday said the recruitment process of government jobs has been completely overhauled in the state, adding that these jobs were being auctioned under the previous Samajwadi Party government. Addressing a public event at Ambedkar Nagar, CM Yogi Adityanath said, 'Government jobs here were being auctioned before 2017 under the previous government. One family was heavily involved in this act. The whole state was witnessing this drama. But now on the basis of merit, youngsters are getting jobs.' The Chief Minister also inaugurated and laid down the foundation stone of 194 development projects worth Rs 1,184 crore. 'A total of 11,690 farmer families will benefit through over Rs 500 crore being distributed under the 'Mukhyamantri Krishak Durghatna Bima Yojana'. This year, all families of farmers affected by disasters will receive a token assistance of Rs 5 lakh each from the UP government. Today, this amount will be directly transferred to the bank accounts of all 431 such families...' he said. Earlier on Sunday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah distributed appointment letters to 60,244 Civil Police Constables of Uttar Pradesh Police in Lucknow. In his address, Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Amit Shah, said that today more than 60,000 youth are going to become an integral part of the largest police force in India. He said that the Uttar Pradesh Police is the largest police force in the entire country, but for some years in the past, the law and order situation was deteriorating. He said that in 2017, Yogi Adityanath became the Chief Minister of the state, and the Uttar Pradesh Police once again began to move forward on the path of achieving new heights. The Uttar Pradesh Police Constable Recruitment Exam 2024 was held on August 23, 24, 25, 30, and 31 across 67 districts. The exam, conducted in two shifts each day, was held at 1,174 centres and aimed to fill over 60,000 vacancies. (ANI)
