Thug Life box office collection day 1: Kamal Haasan-Mani Ratnam's film hurt by poor reviews, opens lower than Indian 2, Ponniyin Selvan; earns Rs 17 crore
The Kamal Haasan-starrer Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam, was released in theatres on Thursday amid much controversy following the 'Ulaganayagan's comments on the Kannada language. It appears that the controversy leading up to the release, and the film's shadow ban in Karnataka, has hampered its opening day collection. On the first day, the Mani Ratnam-directed film made Rs 17 crore, as per industry tracker Sacnilk. This is a much lower figure than that of Kamal's last release, Indian 2, and Mani Ratnam's last film, Ponniyin Selvan 2.
The film was released on a Thursday and witnessed 52 percent occupancy in Tamil. Thug Life was also released in Telugu, with around 21 percent occupancy, and Hindi, with just 6 percent occupancy. Thug Life had over 1000 shows in Chennai and these saw around 70 percent occupancy. In Hindi, the Delhi-NCR region had over 400 shows, with around 4.5 percent occupancy. In Telugu, Hyderabad also saw over 400 shows with around 19 percent occupancy.
Thug Life has received mediocre reviews, and this could be a factor in the film's performance in the long run. Kamal's last release, the widely panned Indian 2, directed by S Shankar, released in July 2024 after a lot of promotions and delivered an opening of Rs 25.6 crore. But it witnessed a steep fall afterwards, and finished its domestic box office run at just Rs 81.32 crore. Vikram, which released in 2022, was Kamal's last big hit, Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, the film started its box office journey with Rs 32 crore and finished its domestic run at around Rs 250 crore.

For director Mani Ratnam, Thug Life's box office is a step down from his Ponniyin Selvan films. The first part, which released in 2022, opened with Rs 34 crore, and collected Rs 266 crore at the domestic box office. The second part, which released in 2023, opened with Rs 24 crore and finished its domestic run with a little over Rs 180 crore. It is yet to be seen if Thug Life can follow that path, but so far, it appears that audiences weren't as excited about the pair's long-overdue reunion as it might have seemed.
The Kannada controversy started after Kamal made a remark at the film's audio launch. In a conversation with actor Shivarajkumar, he called him 'family in another state' and remarked, 'Your language was born out of Tamil.' Several groups, political and otherwise, raised their objection to this statement and sought an apology from Kamal Haasan. He refused to apologise and the Karnataka Film Chambers of Commerce (KFCC) threatened to ban his film. The ban was eventually put in place but Kamal refuse to issue an apology. At another event this past week, he did not address the controversy but thanked the people from Tamil Nadu for standing by him. 'I should thank the entire state of Tamil Nadu, which stood behind me. I completely understand the meaning of the phrase, 'Uyire, Urave, Tamizhe (my life and family are Tamil)' that I use during public addresses. And I stand by it,' he said.

Top Bollywood Openers Of 2025: Housefull 5 takes the 3rd spot with Rs 22 crore net; Chhaava and Sikandar claim first 2 positions
The Bollywood box office in 2025 has been a mixed bag, with some films putting up record-breaking numbers while the others are struggling. Housefull 5 has taken a good start at the Indian box office of Rs 22 crore and it is on course for a pretty looking Rs 85 crore weekend. Let's dive into the top five Bollywood openers of 2025. The year started with a bang, with Chhaava leading the charge. Starring Vicky Kaushal, Rashmika Mandanna, and Akshaye Khanna, this historical drama smashed records with a whopping Rs 29.50 crore net on its opening day. Released on February 14, the film's gripping tale of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj struck a chord, especially in Maharashtra. It went on to do all time blockbuster level business. Next up is Sikandar, Salman Khan's Eid 2025 action drama. Directed by AR Murugadoss, it raked in an estimated Rs 25 crore net on day one. The movie could not live up to its high-set expectations and crumpled after the holiday season, thus sealing a sorry fate. Housefull 5, led by Akshay Kumar, has now claimed the third spot. The comic caper has opened to Rs 22 crore net. Early advance bookings suggested it might struggle to cross Rs 20 crore, but strong spot bookings pushed it past that mark with ease. The weekend advance bookings are looking strong and it is now to be seen how the movie sustains over the weekdays. Raid 2, starring Ajay Devgn, has dropped to the fourth spot. Released on May 1, this crime thriller opened to Rs 19 crore net. The sequel to the 2018 hit benefited from the May Day holiday on the opening day. However, it held well over the course of the next few weeks to emerge a bonafied hit. Rounding out the top five is Sky Force, with an opening day number of Rs 13.75 crore net. Top 5 Bollywood Opening Days of 2025 (India Net Collections) 1. Chhaava - Rs 29.50 crore 2. Sikandar - Rs 25 crore 3. Housefull 5 - Rs 22 crore 4. Raid 2 - Rs 19 crore 5. Kamal Haasan Files Nomination For Rajya Sabha Seat From Tamil Nadu

Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) President and famed actor Kamal Haasan on Friday filed nomination papers to contest for the biennial polls to Rajya Sabha from Tamil Nadu which are scheduled for June 19. Haasan signed and presented the papers to officials at the State Secretariat in Chennai in the presence of Chief Minister MK Stalin, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, and senior leaders from his party. — Udhay (@Udhaystalin) June 6, 2025 This marks his formal entry into the upcoming upper house contest. Elections for six Rajya Sabha seats from Tamil Nadu are set to be held on June 19. Haasan was initially expected to file his papers earlier but deferred it, reportedly due to the backlash he faced for a controversial comment on the origins of Kannada. Kamal Haasan Controversy The actor landed in a big controversy recently. The South superstar attended the Thug Life audio launch event in Chennai, where he made a statement linking the origins of the Kannada language to Tamil. 'Actor Shivarajkumar is my family living in another state. That's why he is here. That's why when I started my speech, I said 'my life and my family is Tamil'. Your language (Kannada) was born out of Tamil. So you are included in that line," he said. The actor's remarks quickly went viral and triggered backlash from pro-Kannada groups in Karnataka. They not only demanded an apology from Haasan but also a ban on his upcoming movie. However, the actor refused to apologise, saying, 'If I am wrong, I will apologise. If I am not, then I won't." This led to the situation getting escalated as the Karnataka Film Chamber warned that his new film, 'Thug Life', will not see a release in the state unless he apologises for his remark. This prompted Haasan to move the High Court, seeking protection to release the film without disturbance. Taking a stern view, the Karnataka High Court, earlier this week rapped the actor and asked him the basis of his claims, saying that his 'one apology would have solved everything".
