Chennai: To rule out bogus faculty members, Anna University has announced it would carry out verification of faculty members in engineering colleges through Aadhaar-based biometric authentication on a monthly basis.

Sources in the university said it would help check whether faculty members shown as working during the physical inspection continue to work in those colleges or not. "Aadhaar-based biometric authentication of existing faculty members with unique ID will be carried out every month. New faculty members without Anna University ID can submit the duly filled-in faculty profile with supporting documents on the web portal," a circular from the university to colleges said.
A principal from a private engineering college said the university can consider a centralised attendance portal or conduct a surprise visit during the academic year instead of asking for faculty members' details every month. "We even have to submit documents for faculty members on leave or who quit," the principal said.
Anti-corruption NGO Arappor Iyakkam, in July last year, exposed that 353 individuals were working in multiple engineering colleges for 2023-24.
Following this, Anna University's internal probe found that the colleges filled around 2,000 faculty positions for 2023-24 and 2024-25 with bogus faculty members.
Many faculty members were wrongly shown by colleges as working in multiple institutions at the same time as well. Anna University also suspended its former vice-chancellor R Velraj for providing affiliation to colleges with bogus faculty members.

NRI family attacked, constable line-attached after protest

Bhopal: A London-based NRI family was allegedly targeted and attacked in Bhind district, triggering anger among members of the Sikh community and forcing police to act against a local constable accused of instigating the assault. Vikramjit Singh, originally from Ashoknagar and now settled in the UK, had arrived at his in-laws' house in Fatehpur village near Gohad after two and a half years, along with his wife Rajveer Kaur, son Rohanpreet Singh and daughter Ravneet Kaur. On Thursday evening, while the family was buying fruits on Station Road in Gohad, they got into an altercation with constable Kuldeep Kushwaha, who was in plain clothes. According to the family, the constable used abusive language, made a video of their car, and grew angry when asked for his identity. "When I refused to let him make a video of my car and family, he called others and asked them to come with weapons," Singh told police officers. The family left in their car but was allegedly intercepted near a dhaba between Station Road and Fatehpur village. A group of men armed with sticks attacked the vehicle, shattering its side glass and windows. Rohanpreet suffered facial injuries while Ravneet's hand was hurt in the assault. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo The incident was captured on video, which surfaced on Friday. Singh later complained to the Gohad police, but said he was pressured to hush up the case. When he went to the station, the SHO allegedly said he could have run over his constable. Singh then said his car was fitted with cameras and everything was recorded. The family has also complained to the Indian Embassy in London. After protests by the Sikh community, who accused Kushwaha of plotting the attack, Bhind SP Asit Yadav removed the constable from duty and line-attached him. "Attackers are being identified and action will be taken," said officials. Local MLA Keshav Desai also reached the spot and supported the Sikh community, pointing out that there were earlier complaints against the constable. Dozens of community members gathered at the police station demanding registration of an FIR against the constable. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Businessman involved in Kowdiar land grab case seeks pre-arrest bail

Thiruvananthapuram: Businessman Anil Thampi, who allegedly orchestrated the Kowdiar land grab scam, has approached high court seeking pre-arrest bail. He approached court after Museum police issued a lookout notice against him. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now During the probe into the case, police found that Thampi, 52, of Jawahar Nagar, paid Rs 1.48 crore to vendor and former Congress district committee member Ananthapuri Manikantan, 50, who is accused of forging documents of a property at Jawahar Nagar. Without the knowledge of its owner, the property was sold to Chandrasenan, 62, of Sasthamangalam, who is also the father-in-law of Thampi. Chandrasenan told police that Thampi had some tax-related issues, and due to this, he directed the property to be registered in his name. After the fraud came to light, police believed that the land was snatched by Manikantan by forging documents and sold to Chandrasenan. However, Manikantan told police that it was as per the direction of Thampi that the documents were forged, as the landowner was not willing to sell it to Thampi, despite him approaching them several times. "Manikantan's version is not fully trustworthy, as there is a possibility that Thampi was cheated by Manikantan," said police. The owner of the property, Dora Asariya Crips, is settled in the US and Manikantan forged all the documents of the property and Crips' Aadhaar card. Manikantan got the help of a woman named Vasantha, 76, of Karakulam, who posed as Crips and registered the land in the name of Merin, 27, of Punalur. Merin posed as the stepdaughter of Crips at the sub-registrar office. Later, Merin sold the property to Chandrasenan. "We collected bank details of the payment Thampi made to Manikantan. He later gave Rs 10 lakh to Merin and Rs 5 lakh to Vasantha," said police.

LSE graduate among three held in Delhi for extortion attempt from Thailand

NEW DELHI: Three men, including a London School of Economics (LSE) graduate, were arrested for allegedly attempting to extort Rs 2 crore from a Delhi-based businessman by impersonating a notorious gangster, police said on Saturday. The accused, identified as Sumit (42), Prince (35), and Nitish (31), had flown to Thailand to execute their plan but were nabbed upon their return to India. The case came to light after the victim filed a complaint at the DBG Road police station, stating that he had received a threatening WhatsApp call from an international number. The caller, posing as a well-known gangster, demanded Rs 2 crore through a cryptocurrency QR code and issued death threats against the complainant's children if the payment was not made. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Nidhin Valsan said investigators used advanced techniques to trace the call and QR code to Thailand. 'Police analysed previous crypto transactions and monitored the suspects' movements. Once they landed in India, they were arrested,' Valsan said. Two mobile phones used to generate the crypto QR code and make the WhatsApp call were also recovered. During interrogation, the accused reportedly confessed to being heavily debt-ridden and hatching the extortion plan as a quick solution. Sumit, who works in the jewellery trade, was acquainted with the victim's family. To evade detection, the trio traveled to Thailand, procured an international SIM card, and made the calls via WhatsApp while abroad. Nitish, a master's graduate from LSE, was among those involved in the scheme. A case has been registered, and further investigations are underway.
