Former intern rises to CEO at Andover staffing firm Alku

'In ALKU's earliest days, I never could have imagined the success that we would have achieved,' Eldridge wrote in the internal memo announcing the leadership change. 'For a little while we teetered on the brink of failure and, even then, the spirit of the employees is what allowed us to overcome and flourish.' Advertisement Most of Alku's executives today, Bull said, started in entry-level positions, just like he did. That's one reason Bull says he appreciates the outside guidance provided by private equity firm New Mountain Capital, which acquired a controlling stake in Alku in 2023. Eldridge, who picked the name Alku because it means 'start,' a staffing term, in Finnish, will stick around as an advisor to the company he founded in 2008, and will serve as chairman. The timing of the announcement coincided with his 60th birthday. The business, located in 75,000 square feet at the Brickstone office complex in Andover, specializes in finding people to fill temporary assignments in life sciences and tech; Bull says the agency is considering whether to branch into recruiting for full-time, permanent placements, too. Advertisement The firm's revenue could approach $600 million this year, though the staffing industry as a whole has retrenched since hitting peak levels in 2022. As the sector contracts, Alku is gaining market share: Staffing Industry Analysts recently ranked Alku as the 41st largest based on US revenue, up from 57th the previous year, and behind only one Massachusetts-based agency, Beacon Hill Staffing Group. Bull is the first intern to become CEO at Alku. But maybe he won't be the last. 'In my new hire orientation, I always say there's probably somebody here who will someday be certainly a vice president, or perhaps a president or CEO,' Bull said. 'I absolutely think that's within the cards. ... That's how the company has been built, from the bottom up.' Jon Chesto can be reached at

Here are Goldman's best of the best stock picks heading into August

As the new month kicks off, Goldman Sachs is adding commercial insurance stock Aon to its list of top stock picks. Friday's slump notwithstanding, stocks enter August near all-time highs after staging a dramatic recovery from their lows of the year in April, following President Donald Trump's unveiling of new global tariff policies. Corporate earnings growth, moderate economic data, expectations that the Federal Reserve may soon resume cutting interest rates and progress in trade talks have all served as upward catalysts in recent weeks. As it does each month, Goldman Sachs took the opportunity to refresh the "directors' cut" version of its U.S. conviction list, highlighting the best of Goldman Sachs' buy-rated U.S. stock ideas. Some stocks from Goldman's list are included in the table below. All prices are as of July 31. Goldman's newest addition to the list was Aon, the reinsurance and health and benefit provider that's down about 2% this year. Goldman's $430 price target implies that shares of Aon could rise 21% from here. "Talent + synergies + M & A/capital markets recovery = lots of free cash flow," Goldman Sachs wrote. "AON is poised to deliver stronger than consensus 2026 organic growth and free cash flow (FCF 9%+ above Visible Alpha consensus for 2026/2027) supported by talent investments (more brokers), NFP acquisition synergies (acquired in 2024), and a recovery in M & A and capital markets activity." Aon bought National Financial Partners in April 2024. Of Wall Street analysts covering Aon, more than half, or 55%, rate it a buy. Social media platform Pinterest was another of Goldman's top stock picks. Shares have surged 29% this year, but the investment bank's target price implies the stock could rally another 11% from current levels. More than four fifths, or 81%, of all analysts covering Pinterest rate it a buy. On Monday, Guggenheim analyst Michael Morris reiterated a buy opinion while raising price target on Pinterest to $44 per share from $39. The revised forecast is 14% above where shares of Pinterest closed Thursday. "We remain confident in the PINS story ahead of 2Q earnings as we see the company in the early stages of its monetization opportunity, with progress on Performance+ (particularly AI-related investments) and expanding strategic partnerships (Magnite, Instacart, LTK Influencer Content, Amazon/Google integrations), the primary drivers of near-term revenue growth," he wrote, referring to LTK, a platform that connects social media influencers with their followers to promote shopping. "Overall, we continue to see attractive value at this scaling digital ad player and remain confident in management's ability to execute on several near-term growth initiatives," Morris added. Duke Energy was also on the Goldman list. The Charlotte-based utility has gained more than 14% this year, outperforming the S & P 500, and could rise another 9% from here, Goldman said. In June, Goldman analyst Carly Davenport upgraded Duke to buy from neutral. "The stock has lagged more defensive peers YTD and is making regulatory progress towards building significant generation that is not captured at current levels in our view," she wrote in a note to clients. "We upgrade Duke Energy (DUK) to Buy from Neutral as we become more constructive on the company's outlook from a load growth, generation capex, regulatory and balance sheet perspective and view valuation as more compelling as the stock trades at a discount to other premium utilities." Of all Wall Street analysts covering Duke, a little less than half, or 45%, also rate it buy.

The site of Williamsburg's famed Wythe Diner has sold

The site of Williamsburg's iconic '50s-style diner on Wythe Avenue — a longtime lodestar in one of the neighborhood's hippest corners — has officially traded hands for $12.5 million. The large corner lot, historically occupied by the steel frame of the shuttered Wythe Diner, is set to host a six-story mixed-use building. City records posted on Thursday confirmed the long-awaited sale. The $12.5 million deal closes a colorful chapter for the property, during which it lived many lives — as a classic railcar diner, a Mexican eatery, a coffee shop and even a Chanel pop-up. 5 The former Wythe Diner, located at the intersection of North 3rd Street. Google Earth 5 The steel structure has dominated the site since the 1950s. Eilon Paz The development is expected to include 5,000 square feet of ground-floor retail and 28 apartments above, according to a press release shared with The Post by commercial real estate brokerage TerraCRG. Plans to preserve the eye-catching prefab structure elsewhere will be announced in about a month. 'All parties collaborated thoughtfully to ensure the relocation and preservation of the vintage diner car, which is scheduled for removal post-closing,' the statement said. TerraCRG represented the property's former owner, Sandy Stillman, in the sale. Stillman operated the iconic diner Relish at the site from the late '90s to around 2010. She held on to the property through its many retail evolutions. 'What an amazing experience it was to serve this beauteous community in this sculpture of a restaurant with so much outdoor space in the early days of the BK food revolution, when it seemed as though nearly all customers were talking about art,' Stillman said in the statement. 5 The interior of the diner during its tenure as La Esquina, a Mexican restaurant. Eilon Paz 5 The site transformed into a pastel-covered confection in 2023 for a Chanel fragrance pop-up. Chanel 5 The vacant property will become a six-story development. Google Earth Stillman praised the buyers 'above and beyond spiritual beauty, talent and desire to help save this shiny diner.' The shiny shell arrived at the intersection of Williamsburg's North 3rd Street in the 1950s. Wythe Diner remained in operation until the late 1980s. The property, including the 2,800-square-foot prefab, sold to Stillman in 1998. Under Stillman's ownership, the site hosted the Mexican eatery Cafe De La Esquina, a Blank Street coffee shop and a colorful Chanel fragrance pop-up for fall Fashion Week in 2023. A report in early July by Crain's New York detailed Williamsburg-based developer Yoel Schwimmer's prospective plans to transform the site into a roughly 24,600-square-foot building. The new owner of the Wythe Avenue corner shares an address with Schwimmer's OVV LLC, so it appears that Schwimmer's plans are moving forward. The final $12.5 million deal was brokered by Andrew Manasia and Daniel Lebor at TerraCRG. Schwimmer could not be reached for comment by press time.
