KUALA LUMPUR: As media organisations embark on digital transformation, the government is stepping in with support through a RM30mil fund to aid them in such efforts.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim made the announcement yesterday in conjunction with National Journalists Day (Hawana) 2025.
'We want to ensure the journalism world is not left behind in adopting artificial intelligence while also maintaining a balance between AI and ethics,' he said during his speech at Hawana 2025 at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
'The government has agreed to allocate RM30mil for journalists. This is the largest allocation the government has provided for journalists since Merdeka,' he said, adding that the fund would be used for training.
He said the journalism fraternity must strike a balance between the development of technology and journalistic ethics.
Press freedom must be defended as it is one of the pillars of democracy, he said.
Citing American philosopher Noam Chomsky, he said there are some challenges in the form of manufacturing consent, whereby the tools of power are used to create a narrative.
'Journalists and media leaders have to ensure that while we reject manufacturing consent, we must also reject manufacturing dissent,' he said.
He said that as much as one would not want the 'tyranny of the majority' where power is used to oppress, the tyranny of the minority which divides the country is also not wanted.
Anwar also acknowledged some of the criticisms he has received, adding that some of his government's measures may not be seen as popular.
This includes the push for higher wages in the government and corporate sector.
However, he remains firm in his commitment to weed out corruption and steering reforms, although it may take some time.
'I will do my job regardless of whether I have the general support or not,' he said.
Anwar emphasised that his intention is not to incarcerate people but to recoup money squandered through corruption and use it for the betterment of the people.
He highlighted that in a tradition where corruption was endemic and systemic, his government has initiated reforms, including proper tender and award of projects and enacting new legislation such as the Public Finance and Fiscal Responsibility Act.
'It sounds simple, to most of you, but it is not easy. Many are not comfortable. Those who are used to the old ways,' he added.
'When we have taken action against those corrupt leaders, past or present leaders, businessmen, corporate leaders who have squandered billions of ringgit, I have not seen that sort of anger and support that we should have. But it does not matter,' he said.
At a press conference later, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said that the RM30mil fund is meant to help media organisations navigate the changing journalism landscape.
He said the changes included the shift of the interests of news audiences and emergence of technologies.
Also present were Star Media Group chief content officer Datin Paduka Esther Ng and chief news editor Mazwin Nik Anis.

SST expansion for imported food aimed at high-income earners, says Anwar
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the people should compare the expansion of the SST with the GST, which was even imposed on basic necessities like sugar and flour. PETALING JAYA : Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has defended the government's decision to expand the scope of the sales and service tax on imported products, saying it is targeted at high-income earners. Anwar, who is also the finance minister, said food items such as avocados and cod fish, which were imported, were generally purchased by the wealthy. 'If the rich want to eat avocados, then they will need to pay a little more,' he said at an event in Ipoh, Perak, today. On June 9, the finance ministry announced that a 5% to 10% rate will be imposed on non-essential goods from July 1, although basic necessities would not be taxed. Still, the announcement triggered brickbats. Other food items which will be slapped with a 5% tax include king crabs, salmon and truffles. Anwar also touched on the brouhaha over imported bananas, which were included in the revised list of items to be checked. He said locally produced bananas like pisang emas and pisang rastali would not be taxed. He urged the public to compare the expansion of the SST with the goods and services tax, which he said was even imposed on basic necessities like sugar and flour. 'Even though the rate was low, the rakyat had to bear the GST,' he said. Anwar admitted that while it was easier to implement the GST when compared to the SST, he wondered if the government should tax fishermen, small-time farmers and street sweepers. He said that whatever revenue was generated from tax collection would be used to increase the salaries of civil servants, social aid such as the 'Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah', and to develop infrastructure. Anwar said the government had allocated RM13 billion for the STR cash aid for the B40 and M40 groups to help cushion the impact of the rising cost of living. 'I really hope the public understands this,' he said.

New Sepak Takraw Academy to nurture talent, host matches, and boost PSM income with RM6 million MADANI Government funding.
KOTA BHARU: The setting up of the Malaysian Sepak Takraw Academy is expected to serve as a catalyst for the development of new talent in the sport as well as pave the way for the Malaysian Sepak Takraw Association (PSM) to generate new sources of income. Chairman of the Athletes Education Committee under the PSM Sepak Takraw Development Bureau, Prof Dr Mohad Anizu Mohd Nor said the immediate allocation of RM6 million announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim yesterday would enable the academy to be fully equipped and function comprehensively. He said it would serve as a training centre, official match venue, administrative office and also provide dormitory facilities. 'This allows PSM to train more new grassroot talents besides generating income when it can attract international collaboration for promotion and training, besides organising competitions,' he told Bernama. According to Mohad Anizu, the academy is also expected to strengthen the status of sepak takraw which has the potential to be re-instated as a national core sport after being dropped in 2017. 'A rebranding of PSM is also being pursued so that this academy remains relevant as the official national sepak takraw training centre,' he said. Yesterday, the MADANI Government agreed to expedite the approval of allocations for the establishment of the Malaysian Sepak Takraw Academy, so that it can materialise by year-end. Anwar was reported to have said that the government would ensure that the proposal to establish the academy becomes a reality.
