Boost for hydrogen fuel with launch of RM15mil pilot project
PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia has taken a significant step towards a clean energy future with the Mobile Hydrogen Refuelling Station (MHRS) development project, which will function as a driver of innovation in the hydrogen-based mobility sector.
The RM15mil MHRS, a pilot project in the hydrogen mobility sector in Peninsular Malaysia, is located at Precinct 2 here and is capable of supplying 50kg of hydrogen daily through the small-scale station.
Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang said the MHRS not only spurs research and development in hydrogen and fuel cell technology but also supports the country's target of achieving zero carbon emissions by 2050.
"Currently, there are no hydrogen-powered vehicles in Malaysia but we have hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) suppliers.
"Basic infrastructure for FCEV refuelling should be established to accelerate the adoption of hydrogen as a fuel in the transportation and mobility sector," he said after launching the MHRS here on Friday (May 9).
The project is supported by the Science, Technology, and Innovation Ministry through the National Nanotechnology Centre (NNC) and NanoMalaysia Berhad (NMB), in collaboration with PETRONAS Technology Ventures Sdn Bhd (PTVSB), Sime UMW, UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd (UMWT) and the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC).
NMB, as the asset administrator representing the ministry, acts as the operator of the MHRS station and a test site for new technologies to explore long-term commercial opportunities.
PTVSB supplies hydrogen and oversees the station's engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning (EPCC) while Sime UMW and UMWT will provide three Toyota Mirai hydrogen-powered vehicles and offer essential operational and maintenance services.
Elaborating, Chang said the MHRS plays the role of educating the public on the current status of hydrogen technology and demonstrating that hydrogen can now be used as a fuel for vehicles.
"We need to create the ecosystem first. Because we are starting from scratch. We don't have the users and the supply but we are targeting that by 2030, there will be FCEVs on Malaysian roads," he said.
Meanwhile, NMB chief executive officer Dr Rezal Khairi Ahmad said in his speech that the MHRS would not only be a catalyst for clean energy infrastructure but also pave the way for investments and innovations as well as strengthen Malaysia's position as a regional hub for hydrogen technology.
"Under the leadership of the ministry, NMB will continue to leverage the full potential of the MHRS in close collaboration with local authorities, stakeholders and industry players to make Putrajaya the starting point for the country's hydrogen-powered mobility transformation," he said. – Bernama

Chang highlighted two core skill sets – data operations (DataOps) and base-level programming, particularly in Python – which he defined as foundational. 'These 'evergreen skills' are the pillars to deal with the fast-changing technological landscape,' he said. Other functional expertise includes areas in finance, human resources and procurement.

Study ongoing for Sabah's rocket launch site
KUALA LUMPUR: The Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry is awaiting Sabah's full feasibility report before evaluating sites for a potential rocket launch facility. It was reported in July that the ministry was conducting an initial site assessment on proposals from Sabah and Pahang to identify suitable locations in both states. Meanwhile, Minister Chang Lih Kang said Sabah lies in a relatively stable zone, making it suitable for strategic infrastructure development. "Additionally, its location near the Equator offers the natural advantage of increased Earth rotational thrust, which can help reduce launch fuel costs. "Areas with low population density and proximity to the open sea are also ideal for rocket launches, as this minimises safety risks to local residents and reduces disruptions to domestic airspace traffic," he said in a written parliamentary reply. He added that if the launch site initiative is successfully implemented, including in Sabah, it is expected to generate cascading economic benefits, particularly through the growth of primary and supporting industries. These include component manufacturing, logistics, chemical production, and automation technology. "The development also has significant potential to create job opportunities for skilled workers and local youth," he said.

FAM energised to meet sponsorship target by end of year

FAM marketing and sponsorship committee chairman Datuk Mohd Hisamudin Yahaya revealed that the national body have so far raised between RM7mil and RM8mil through the backing of several sponsors. With about half the target still to be achieved in the remaining four months, Hisamudin admitted that the association must step up their efforts to meet the goal set by their president. Hisamudin added that the funds are crucial to cover the expenses of not only the senior national team but also the Under-23 and women's squads. 'We currently have around RM7mil to RM8mil in sponsorship, but we are still short and working to reach the target. 'We already have some initiatives in place and more in the pipeline.
