Ransom Canyon Boss Breaks Down Finale Twists (R.I.P., [Spoiler]!) and Looks Ahead to Season 2
Life in Ransom Canyon will never be the same by the end of the Netflix western's first season.
The sexy, soapy series lassoed plenty of drama in its first 10 episodes, from a devastating tornado to the tragic loss of a town staple — Cap Fuller, played by the iconic James Brolin. Unfortunately, it's Brolin's status as an icon that ultimately led to his character's demise in Episode 10.

'We wanted someone who was kind of iconic like Jim to [play Cap], but we weren't sure if he'd really sign up to do multiple seasons,' showrunner April Blair tells TVLine. 'So I always had in my head that his passing would be the thing that sort of [changed everything]. Once Jim came, he was like, 'I would stay!' But we were sort of already in the process of killing him off, which was sad.'
And Cap's death wasn't the only major development in Ransom Canyon's first season finale. Despite exposing Paula Jo and basically saving the town, Staten could still be removed as his ranch's sole trustee due to his loose-cannon behavior; Quinn accepted a position with the New York Philharmonic; Margaret was arrested for her involvement in Randall's accidental death; Lucas received acceptance letters from Columbia and Princeton; Lauren repaired her relationship with her father, though repairing her shoulder will take more time; and after turning down Yancy's proposal (for now), Ellie was approached by a woman who introduced herself as — wait for it — Yancy's wife.
Below, showrunner April Blair explains how these twists could impact the show's future in a not-yet-ordered second season:
A 'NEW MISSION' FOR QUINN | As planned, Quinn will indeed head to the Big Apple for a stint with the New York Philharmonic — and she will return. 'She comes back with a new mission' in Season 2, Blair says. 'Quinn has spent a lot of her past trying to save other people, and she comes back changed by this experience. Season 2 for her is really about saving herself and doing what's right for her.'
DID SOMEBODY SAY 'TIME JUMP'? | The question is: Will we get to spend time with Quinn in New York, or will we pick up upon her return to Texas? 'The beauty of Ransom Canyon is Ransom Canyon,' Blair says. 'If we started in New York, I'm not sure it would be the same show. So I think we're going to pick up when Quinn returns home after her stint in New York, and that will give us time to see what has changed. Quinn's return is our reentry into Ransom Canyon. We'll see and experience it with her.'
MRS. YANCY GREY REVEALED | I don't know too much about where the storyline with Yancy's estranged wife is headed — other than it being bad news for Ellie — but I can reveal this fun behind-the-scenes secret: the woman who played his wife in the finale was actually Erica Dasher, who previously starred on Blair's then-ABC Family series Jane by Design. 'I don't know that she'll actually play the wife [in Season 2],' Blair says. 'That's why we only showed her from behind. But she was visiting me in New Mexico, and I was like, 'Can I make you the back of a mystery head?''
REID'S 'LOYALTY' IS TESTED | If you enjoyed watching Lucas and Reid's unlikely bromance develop throughout Ransom Canyon's first season, you're going to love what Season 2 has in store. 'They hit some roadblocks, but they definitely maintain a friendship,' Blair says. 'Reid evolves into someone who's conflicted about life. He knows the sacrifices his dad made to save their ranch, but he also doesn't agree with all of his dad's moves. His dad moves a little wild sometimes. He has a loyalty to his father and a loyalty to his friendship with Lucas, and how he navigates those in Season 2 is fun — and a little heart-wrenching.'
A 'FRESH MYSTERY' | With the truth about Margaret's accidental involvement in Randall's death finally exposed, Lauren's mom is now behind bars and 'that mystery has been put to bed,' Blair says. 'You never move on from the loss of a child, but we wanted Staten to be able to start growing emotionally and letting go of that ghost.' But with a new season comes new drama — and a new question mark for the people of Ransom Canyon. 'In Season 1, the pipeline was threatening to come in. In Season 2, it's being laid and constructed. There's a whole new, fresh mystery and engine to Season 2.'
OK, let's talk: Did you enjoy your trip to Ransom Canyon? Are you hoping for a (very likely) Season 2 renewal? Who are your favorite and least favorite characters? Whatever's on your mind, drop it in a comment below.

Madonna Teams Up With Shawn Levy and Netflix For a Limited Series Based on Her Life: Report
Madonna fans have been waiting for years to see the Queen of Pop get her very own biopic — and according to a new report, they may finally get to see one. According to a report from Deadline on Monday (May 12), Madonna has teamed up with Deadpool & Wolverine producer Shawn Levy to develop a limited series based on her life and career for Netflix. Levy's production company 21 Laps currently has an exclusive deal with Netflix. More from Billboard See Madonna, Chappell Roan, Charli xcx & Lorde Squeeze In for Epic Met Gala Selfie Twenty One Pilots Fans Jumped Into Veronica Mars Mode After Someone Took Off With One of Josh Dun's Bespoke Drums Palm Tree Festival to Debut in St. Tropez With Headliners A$AP Rocky & Swedish House Mafia Billboard reached out to representatives for Madonna and Netflix for comment. The new project is apparently not related to a much-discussed and since-delayed feature film based on Madonna's life. The project, which was being developed by Universal Pictures and set to star Ozark and Inventing Anna actress Julia Garner as the pop superstar, was put on an indefinite hold in 2023 as Madonna embarked on her Celebration World Tour. In 2024, however, Madonna sparked rumors that the film might be back in the works, when she shared a since-deleted photo of herself sitting at a typewriter working on a screenplay titled Who's That Girl — an apparent nod to her 1987 film and song of the same name. Still, Madonna herself floated the idea of creating a TV series about her life in November of last year, claiming that a number of 'producers and agents' told her that she wouldn't be able to make her film the way she wanted to. 'Downsize-down scale-think smaller-they say—I realized that everything in my life is going to be challenged,' she wrote in a since-removed post, before asking her fans if they would prefer to see her story adapted into 'a series or a feature film.' Sean Penn Reacts (30 Years Later) to Madonna Calling Him the Love of Her Life
In her 1991 documentary Truth or Dare, Madonna declared that Sean Penn was the love of her life. And more than three decades later, the actor is sharing his thoughts on it. In an interview on The Louis Theroux Podcast posted Monday (May 12), Penn said that his superstar ex-wife was 'very sweet' for her remarks in the Alek Keshishian-directed doc when asked whether he recalled what she'd said. 'I do,' he told Theroux. 'Look, she's been a good friend for a lot of years.' After their divorce in 1989, the exes stayed friends. 'It didn't take us long to realize that we had mistaken a good first date for a wedding partner,' Penn said. 'It didn't take us long to recover after we got divorced, maybe a year, in a friendship. I have a lot of fond memories of it – it's not all jail.' The actor added: 'But there was a lot of alcohol and she'd be fairly accusing me of that.' Following her split from Penn, the 'Material Girl' singer would go on to marry Guy Ritchie in 2000 before they separated in 2008. Penn was married to Robin Wright from 1996 to 2010, followed by Leila George from 2020 to 2022. Penn's thoughts on the Truth or Dare documentary come just after a report that a long-awaited biopic about Madonna's life is finally in the works. According to Deadline, the star has teamed up with Shawn Levy for a Netflix limited series about her life and career. Madge is also currently working on new music with producer Stuart Price, who worked on her Billboard 200-topping 2005 album Confessions on a Dance Floor. It's been about six years since the 'Vogue' singer last dropped a proper album, releasing Madame X in 2019. SWAT: Exiles: Deacon & Victor Tan Actors React to the Spin-off Announcement
While the upcoming spin-off series, titled SWAT: Exiles, will soon usher in a new era for the fan-favorite franchise, its abrupt announcement seems to have drawn a bittersweet reaction from Jay Harrington, who played Deacon, and David Lim, who portrayed Victor Tan in the original series. The duo has come out to share their disappointment about being informed of the spin-off just two days after the premiere of the SWAT Season 8 finale. In a recent discussion, Jay Harrington, who played the role of Deacon on SWAT throughout its eight-season run, noted that the cast was completely unaware of the existence of SWAT: Exiles. While speaking with TVLine, the Better Off Ted alum revealed that 'not once' was he notified of the recently confirmed SWAT spin-off. Harrington, along with most of the rest of the show's cast, only came to know about plans for Exiles on May 18, from Hondo actor Shemar Moore. Understandably taken aback by the sudden announcement for SWAT: Exiles, Harrington stated, 'I did not have a spin-off on my bingo card, for sure.' While he admitted that the SWAT producers did not owe him anything, he did say that the studio should've let him know that they wanted a 'clean break [and to] start fresh.' 'If there was any disappointment, it's that when they announced it, we weren't mentioned at all,' Harrington added. While Harrington expressed his feelings about SWAT: Exiles in an expansive interview, his co-star, David Lim, penned a heartfelt message on his Instagram profile to do the same. After showing gratitude to fans for celebrating his eight-year stint on SWAT, Lim let his thoughts about the forthcoming spin-off be known. He wrote, 'I'd be lying if I said the rollout of the new spinoff didn't sting. It was tough to see it announced just two days after our finale—with no mention of the cast who helped build S.W.A.T. from day one. After 8 incredible seasons, it felt like we were brushed aside when there could've been a moment of reflection and recognition—for the people who built this show, and for the impact it had on so many.' Despite his criticisms of how the announcement of SWAT: Exiles was handled, Lim reiterated how proud he was of his castmates before concluding his message by noting, 'No version of this story can take that away.'
