Sridevi called this her best film, and it's not ChaalBaaz, Lamhe or Chandni: ‘People started thinking I can act'
Sridevi talks about working with Shekhar Kapur
Though she never formally attended acting school, Sridevi's innate talent and magnetic screen presence earned her critical acclaim and popular adoration. From the radiant romance of Chandni and the complex duality in ChaalBaaz, to the bold narrative of Lamhe, Sridevi had a rare ability to blend commercial appeal with emotionally nuanced performances.
On 56th birth anniversary of Sridevi, we revisit a past interview of her where she revealed why Mr India was special to her. The 1987 science-fiction adventure, directed by Shekhar Kapur, gave her the space to move beyond her glam image and explore a more layered performance.
Speaking about the experience, Sridevi once said in an old interview with Colors Cineplex, "In every film for an artist, it is the director who plays the biggest role. We were spontaneous, but it was the director who helped. For instance, I have worked with Shekhar Kapoor, and I really enjoyed my experience in Mr India. It was my best film, I can say. Because that's the first film which was different from a glamorous role. People started talking, of course, I think she can also act."
She particularly recalled the now-iconic Charlie Chaplin sequence, which was initially written as a minor scene. But once Sridevi got into costume and began performing, Shekhar Kapur was so impressed that he expanded it into a major comedic highlight of the film—one that still brings smiles to fans decades later.
Sridevi's illustrious character
Sridevi's talent did not go unrecognised. Over the course of her illustrious career, she received numerous accolades, including the National Film Award for Best Actress posthumously for her role in Mom (2017), five Filmfare Awards, and the Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian honour, in 2013. Her performance in films like Sadma, ChaalBaaz, and English Vinglish also earned widespread critical acclaim.
Fluent in six languages, Sridevi was a truly pan-Indian star who connected with diverse audiences. Her sudden passing in 2018 left a void that's hard to fill, but her films, characters, and spirit continue to live on.

Coolie (Hindi) Day 2 Box Office: Rajinikanth and Lokesh Kanagaraj film jumps to Rs 6.50 crore on Independence Day
The Rajinikanth and Lokesh Kanagaraj-led Coolie has seen a 50 percent jump in collections on the second day as early trends indicate Independence Day business in the range of Rs 6.25 crore to Rs 6.75 crore. With this, the two-day total of Coolie stands at Rs 10.75 crore, and the film will be looking at an extended opening weekend in the range of Rs 20.00 crore. The Independence Day jump should have been bigger, but the reports are probably mixed, curtailing the chances of a big number. At one point of time through the advance sales cycle based on the trends, Coolie looking like a Rs 6.50 crore opener, but the film settled with a first day of Rs 4.25 crore. The film is doing well in single screens and will probably be the second highest-grossing Tamil Film in Hindi by the end of its run, which is good for optics, but the success tag would depend on the business it does post Monday. The film has faced competition with War 2 in Hindi, and could have done better without the opponent, as both the films catered largely to the masses. Coolie is continuing to do well in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and even Andhra Pradesh/Telangana on the second day, though some early cracks are visible on the second day in international markets. The Independence Day holiday has helped Coolie, though the jump had the scope to be higher given that the film has seen a release on about 1400 screens in North India. Here's a look at day-wise box office of Coolie Thursday: Rs 4.25 crore Friday: Rs 6.50 crore (Estimates) Total: Rs 10.75 crore Stay tuned to Pinkvilla for more updates!

How Australia Cricketer's Action Turned Party In Yuvraj Singh's Room 'Dead Quiet' During 2011 WC: 'Bollywood Celebs...'
John Hastings recalls the moment when he had to call the hotel reception to tell them he will fix the damage caused in Yuvraj Singh's room. In a room full of people including international cricketers and Bollywood stars, a young Australia fast bowler's attempt to play his favourite songs at a party hosted by Yuvraj Singh resulted in a broken table and a pin-drop silence. The anecdote, narrated by the guilty party himself, is from during the 2011 ODI World Cup held in the Indian subcontinent. The then 25-year-old John Hastings was among the Aussie stars invited to attend a party at Yuvraj's suite which the former fast bowler says was bigger than his house back home. 'It was one of those ones where we'd obviously had a few and I think you know we'd obviously been invited up to Yuvi's (Yuvraj Singh) room and walked in and there was a suite. It was massive. It was as big as my house over here. And I remember looking around, I just jeez there's so many people in here," Hastings said on LiSTNR sport. While the size and crowd impressed the young Aussie, the music didn't. 'What's going on with this music? So, I was fiddling around with the laptop trying to get some of my playlist on and I sat on the edge of this…ledge that had a phone on there. There was a laptop, I sat on it and boom off it came down on the floor and I just remember everyone just stopped and looked and went silent, dead quiet, pin could drop," Hastings remembered. The situation could have easily intimidated Hastings, but he recalls keeping his calm and calling the reception to inform them of the damage he had caused. However, the phone in the room had been damaged as well. 'I just went, 'What am I going to do here? I'm a young kid.' It's Yuvraj Singh's room. There are so many people here. There's probably Bollywood celebrities everywhere, and I just went, 'Right, stay calm,' and I went to the phone, which was already out off the wall, and I'd seen the cord be ripped out of the wall. So, I just thought, I'll just make sure that I've made this right. And there was no one on the end of the line. So, I picked up the phone. I said, 'Reception, yep. John Hastings, I just want to make sure that there's a bit of damage in Mr. Singh's room. I'll make sure I fix it up. I'm in the room such and such.' And everyone was like, 'Well done, mate. That's brilliant.' And everyone just kicked on, played on," Hastings said. 'I actually went down to reception to make sure that I could rectify the situation, but there was never another word. So, happy days. I didn't have to pay for any damage and we had a really good night," he added. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
