When Stuff announced it was merging its digital wing with Trade Me last week, things had gone full circle.
New Zealand's biggest publisher of news had bought the online marketplace itself in 2006 for more than $700m.
Back then it was called Fairfax Media NZ, a subsidiary of the giant Australian news publisher which parted with $1.2 billion to buy the The Press, Dominion Post and Sunday Star Times and others.
By 2012, TradeMe was sold off in bits to ease debts and falling revenue. And six years later, Greg Hywood negotiated a merger of Fairfax Media and TV broadcaster Nine Network. It created an Australasian news titan but extinguished the Fairfax name.

"The best outcome for our journalism, for our employees, our business and of course our shareholders," Greg Hywood said at the time.
But the New Zealand publishing - now branded as Stuff - wasn't on the radar at the time.
The 95-page merger document only mentioned Fairfax's New Zealand holdings once. And there was no sign of Stuff on a chart showing the logos of the new big beast called Nine Entertainment.
Less than two years later, Nine Entertainment sold its apparently unwanted New Zealand branch for just $1 to its chief editor Sinead Boucher.
Five years after that, sole owner Boucher is now selling half of Stuff's digital business back to Trade Me.
In the same week her former boss in Australia, Greg Hywood, stepped down from his role as chairman of Free TV, the umbrella group for Free to Air TV broadcasting in Australia.
Sydney-based Hywood became the ultimate boss of Stuff and its papers here when he rejoined Fairfax Media as CEO in 2010.
"Editorially and in the day to day business sense, the organisation did what it needed to do - and frankly it was doing really quite well," Hywood told Mediawatch.
"The New Zealand assets were important assets and we kept a close eye on them. They were managed very well.
"I was surprised that it was given back for a dollar because I always thought. . the New Zealand business was probably in better shape than the regional business here, which was sold for A$120m by Nine.
"Good luck to Sinead and the team with what they've subsequently done."
But if Hywood and Boucher had had their way in 2016, the deal could never have happened.
Both backed Fairfax Media NZ merging with its big New Zealand rival APN, the publishers of the New Zealand Herald (these days called NZME). They said it was essential for their survival.
The plan was knocked back by the Commerce Commission who reckoned it would be too much of a monopoly here.
And it would have created one single publisher of news instead of the two we have now - Stuff and NZME - with district editorial approaches offering readers choice.
"In retrospect I'm still supportive of it. Ninety percent of the growth in advertising in both New Zealand and Australia goes to Google and Facebook - and traditional media are fighting over the other 10 percent," Hywood said.
Fairfax and APN / NZME pursued the process in court for three fruitless years.
"You really needed scale to be able to compete and it was a question about diversity or scale. While they have both survived, would they have been able to invest in journalism in the merged entities (more) than what's currently the case? Hywood said.
"I can't answer that, but it was a very legitimate exercise to deal with the structural change going on in the industry and making sure that the journalism would survive."
"By the time I got back to Fairfax in 2010 as CEO, the consequence of investing so heavily in newspapers had put the company in the position where we had to sell TradeMe to reduce the level of debt. The print revenue was dropping at 10 percent a year, which was $100 million a year," Hywood said.
Former All Black captain Divid Kirk was the CEO who bought Trade Me for Fairfax in 2006.
"That was a very good decision by David - to digitise the revenue streams of the business," Hywood said.
Ads for jobs, homes and cars were the so-called 'rivers of gold' - practically a licence for newspapers to print money - as well as news - in the days before the Internet.
Hywood said back in the 1970s Fairfax had its own garage and a staff of mechanics just to service the executives' cars.
"Things were great, and were certainly fun... if you were fortunate enough to be a journalist in those days. But there's no point being what I might call an Anzac of the 70s."
"As the years went by and we hit the Internet period, the role of the journalist was less certain. But the fundamental role of a journalist has always been the same - having a good crack at making sure you get to the kernel of the truth."
Many still know Hywood in Australia as 'the man who swung the axe.' Nineteen hundred people got made redundant at Fairfax in basically a single day in 2012.
"That is what we had to do. You don't feel great making decisions like that, but it's a bit like a surgeon with a dying patient on the operating table."
"The direction the company meant the banks would have been knocking on the door and sold it off and broken it up. It was not going to survive in that form. You've got to do some radical things to save the patient's life."
The closure of printing plants followed - and outsourcing of production to New Zealand.
That prompted strikes and newspaper workers there holding signs like 'Not happy Bro' 'BAAAA-d move' against a backdrop of sheep.
"We offshored the sub-editing process and focused on the local reporting because we had to have the journalism. That was our responsibility."

Fairfax in Australia established the property news and information platform Domain, recently the subject of a bid of NZ$3b from a US real estate firm. But the market leader across the ditch - realestate.com.au - is currently valued around $30b.
Is Stuff's partnership with TradeMe a smart move to secure its news and journalism?
"I'm not close enough to the Stuff and TradeMe merger... but from a distance it looks like a pretty good idea. Well done to Sinead and the team," Hywood said.
"The whole point of the Fairfax and Nine merger was really to get a media company of scale with a property marketing platform to enable it to compete. Domain is a distant number two, but... with the correct investment and the decisions, the ability to take on realestate.com.au was always there. That hasn't occurred but the property marketing market is extremely lucrative."
Companies like Fairfax Media and Stuff have been in the business of managing decline for the last 20 years. Have they now found a sustainable but smaller-scale model based on lucrative digital property platforms?
"I don't think it will ever calm down. It's a bit like a raging river where you've got to hop from island to island. You can't just rely on content and advertising," Hywood said.
"Also, government has always been slow to adapt to what's going on. And it's got to really deeply think about what the right regulatory environment is... to get New Zealand stories in New Zealand, Australian stories in Australia and the news and information that is required."
"The private sector's got to get on its bike and build the businesses. And the government has to provide a fair, and sustainable regulatory environment so that everyone can get on with it."

DOC director of strategic partnerships and investment David Van Der Zouwe said getting more external investment was a priority for the government department. "Through the donations we've launched the Island Ocean Connection Challenge, which is working with international philanthropists for some of our offshore islands - Auckland Island, Rakiura, Stewart Island and the Chatham Islands. "We're trying something new to bring in more money, we've targeted people we know are capable of donating." He said the department would assess the results of its marketing efforts at the end of the month. Photo: RNZ / Peter de Graaf A Northland business leader is imploring shop owners to report all retail crime. even if they do not expect police to turn up. NorthChamber chief executive Leah McKerrow said a series of meetings with small business owners around the region in the past week revealed many had "lost faith" in reporting crime. McKerrow said Northland ranked low in national statistics for shoplifting, but that could be because it simply was not being reported. "What's been evident from a lot of retailers is their frustration and concern that there's no reason to report these crimes, because nothing seems to be done," she said. "While it might not be immediately needed that a police officer attends, making sure that we record the crime is critically important." McKerrow said, if a crime was not reported, it would not show up in the national database. "If it's not showing up, we don't get resourced for it. Police don't get resourced for it." Having an accurate record also allowed police to identify patterns or spikes in retail crime. A directive from police management - quickly reversed by the incoming commissioner - instructing staff not to investigate shoplifting of items worth less than $500, had sent exactly the wrong message, she said. McKerrow's own message to Northland retailers was simple. "No matter how small the shoplifting is, make sure that you are recording it on the police 105 database," she said. And the fact that you might not hear back doesn't mean it's not useful." McKerrow said the meetings at Kaitāia, Kerikeri, Kaikohe, Whangārei and Dargaville were part of a national roadshow by the government's Ministerial Advisory Group for Victims of Retail Crime. The Northland leg was co-ordinated by the Northland Chamber of Commerce to ensure smaller centres were not overlooked, McKerrow said. The aim was to update retailers on law changes already underway and seek feedback on proposals the government was still considering. Northland Chamber of Commerce chief executive Leah McKerrow. Photo: RNZ / Peter de Graaf McKerrow said some laws relating to retail crime originated in the late-1800s and were no longer fit for purpose. Changes already underway included enabling citizens' arrests , increased penalties for shoplifting and violence against business owners, and bringing in fines for low-level shoplifting. Fines would allow those offenders to be dealt with quickly, without clogging up the courts. However, the topic that "really got retailers excited" was trespass law reform, McKerrow said. Currently, a shopowner could not trespass a person without having their details and, even then, trespass orders were hard to enforce. Also, even if a retailer owned several stores, the person could only be trespassed from one location at a time. "This law will change that, and you won't have to deliver them a trespass notice or have their name. You can just verbally tell them they are trespassed." The government was also considering increasing the maximum trespass period from two years to three and doubling the fines for breaching a trespass order. One future reform the government was considering would allow retailers to protect themselves from offenders, without being charged with an offence themselves. "However, it's difficult to know how you can protect yourself, while keeping yourself safe, so that has got to go through quite a lot more investigation." Bryron Smith, owner of Hunting and Fishing Kerikeri, said the most useful change would be the right to hold onto shoplifters until police arrived. "Being able to apprehend those people in store, or even if they leave the store, so we can play our part to catch them there and then … rather than having to wait for police to try and track them down." Under the current law retailers could only ask a shoplifter to stay. "But I don't think many of them are that keen, to be honest." It was even trickier when youth were involved, he said. Whether staff would try to intervene depended on the situation, because their safety was paramount. Smith said he reported most thefts, but with lower-value items they often made use of social media and the store's high-quality CCTV cameras instead. In the most recent case, staff had posted an image of a man who walked out with a $30 pair of shorts. He rang up the next day and paid, Smith said. "The cameras are super effective. No one likes being on social media when we put it up, especially aunties when they've borrowed her car." Photo: RNZ / Peter de Graaf The biggest impact of retail crime was on staff and their sense of safety. It also took up a lot of time. "When you get them running out the store with armfuls of clothing it can take days to go back through the cameras and figure out what they took." Smith said he could not pass on the cost to customers, because the store's prices were set through the Hunting and Fishing group. "So we pretty much just have to suck it up. The cost certainly doesn't get put on our bait or an item of clothing, it's just a loss." Nationally, Leah McKerrow said the financial impact of retail crime was enormous, with shoplifting alone costing retailers $7.2 million per day or $2.6 billion a year, according to police figures. In many cases that was passed on to consumers, who ended up paying higher prices to cover the costs of lost stock and hiring security guards. Northland district commander Superintendent Matt Srhoj said police knew offending had been under-reported in the past . "Our message to retailers is to ensure they continue reporting to us. It's essential to ensure we have the full picture and can prioritise prevention activities where there are trends emerging." Srhoj said retail crime was taken seriously and police would keep holding offenders to account, especially the more prolific ones. In Whangārei, police had set up a crime prevention unit that worked closely with City Safe and other partners to reduce retail crime. Police beat patrols had also increased significantly in the past year, he said. He urged anyone who saw a crime occurring, or who had immediate concerns for their own or someone else's safety, to call 111. Crimes that had already occurred could be reported online by going to and clicking on 'Make a Report', or by calling 105. McKerrow said what had also emerged from the past week's meetings was a surprising link between retail crime and Northland's infamous road closures. Kaitāia retailers reported that shoplifting had increased since State Highway 1 had reopened at Mangamuka Gorge, allowing through-traffic to once again transit the town. And in Dargaville and Mangawhai, retailers reported an increase in shoplifting and ram raids when State Highway 1 was closed at the Brynderwyn Hills, forcing traffic through coastal towns instead. That suggested a significant proportion of retail crime was opportunistic and committed by out-of-towners. McKerrow said the meetings also discussed the wider issues driving crime, such as the doubling in methamphetamine use in Northland in the past year, the cost-of-living crisis and rising unemployment. Do more expensive KiwiSaver funds give a better return?

RNZ has compared long-term returns to the funds' total cost ratios. Photo: 123RF Does paying more for your KiwiSaver give you a better return? Well, maybe. But maybe not. RNZ has conducted analysis of Morningstar's most recent KiwiSaver data, comparing long-term returns to the funds' total cost ratios. It showed that the highest performers in the conservative category, were Milford, QuayStreet and Fisher TWO. Fisher TWO was charging less than average - at 0.52 percent compared to 0.62 percent. Milford and QuayStreet had high fees relative to the category but were low overall and their returns were higher than some of the more aggressive fund types that would usually be more expensive. Milford had returns of 5.1 percent a year over 10 years, compared to a peer group average of 4.1 percent. Simplicity had the lowest fees for that category but does not have 10 years of returns. Over five years, it returned 1.9 percent a year. Of moderate funds, Generate and BNZ were solid performers. BNZ had fees of 0.45 percent compared to an average of 0.8 percent for that type of fund and was the second best for returns over 10 years. Generate was first but had higher fees, at 1.14 percent. Westpac had the lowest fees and was fourth-best performing. Among balanced funds, Quay St and Milford were delivering strong returns but had some of the higher fees - at 1.03 percent and 1.07 percent respectively, compared to an average 0.75 percent. SuperLife Ethica was the third-best performer and had fees of 0.7 percent. Simplicity had the cheapest funds of that group, at 0.25 percent. It does not have 10 years of history but was 11th over five years. Milford, Generate and Quay St were the outperformers in the growth category. Milford returned 10.4 percent a year over 10 years compared to an average 7.8 percent for that group of funds. But investors were paying higher fees - between 1.25 percent and 1.29 percent compared to an average 0.97 percent. Generate, FisherTWO and Booster were best performing in the aggressive categories. On the flipside, ANZ was the poorest performer in the conservative category but was charging above-average fees. Booster was ranked eighth and was charging 1.11 percent compared to the average 0.62 percent. Among moderate funds, Booster and Fisher Funds appeared to be providing lower returns for higher fees. In the balanced category, ANZ was charging 0.91 percent compared to an average 0.75 percent and was ranked 15th. Booster was 11th with fees of 1.22 percent. Booster also seemed expensive compared to its returns in the growth category. Morningstar data director Greg Bunkall said there did not seem to be a strong correlation between paying more for a fund and getting a better return. "There are some good active - which cost more - and good passive options -which cost less. "Depending on what time period, or cohort you choose you can get widely differing results. My suggestion is as an investor, get an idea about the style you like and then assess those providers who offer that service at that price point and make sure you are in the right risk profile." Stefan Stevanovic, head of international equities at QuayStreet Asset Management, said there was not just one one contributing factor that had helped it perform on a returns to fees basis. "There are numerous drivers at play which have contributed to QuayStreet's strong performance. If we had to summarise it briefly it would be centred around our heavy emphasis of understanding current risks. "This helps with filtering out a lot of the noise and narrows our focus in areas that tend to matter. When you pair that approach with a robust and fundamentals driven portfolio construction process, you tend to see improvement in risk-adjusted performance." Fisher Funds chief investment officer Ashley Gardyne said its funds had delivered solid returns in the past 12 months. "That said, relative to benchmark, our returns aren't where we'd like them to be. "As an active manager there will inevitably be periods when returns lag as well as beat the benchmark. History tells us that performance is cyclical, and occasional periods of underperformance are part and parcel of delivering strong long-term results. Our team are always looking for ways to lift returns and we think we are well placed to deliver strong outcomes in the years ahead." Booster chief executive Di Papadopoulos said the data did not capture the value of all services being offered. "They show that Booster's performance is returning firm results, but don't reflect value delivered with a host of other - and in some cases unique - offerings to our KiwiSaver members. "The Morningstar report also does not account for the level of risk being taken in each fund, which is a measure central to our investment approach; we target lower levels of month-to-month volatility than peer funds, to improve how well funds can withstand market volatility. "A key driver of Booster's investment strategy is to smooth out market highs and lows for KiwiSaver members, such as during global turmoil following the pandemic, and US tariff uncertainty affecting the global economy. Monitoring of the seven-year period up to June 2025 for risk-adjusted returns, has Booster's Socially Responsible (SR) Balanced and Balanced funds ranked third and fourth respectively, out of 16 funds." She said Booster's fees included access to financial advice, free accidental death cover, and access to its budgeting app. The highest-performing fund over the 12 months to June was Koura's Bitcoin fund, which returned 73 percent. Koura founder Rupert Carlyon said it had an annualised 76 percent per year return over three years. It has a total cost ratio of 1.1 percent. "This outperformance has been driven by the normalisation of Bitcoin over this period. "We saw the launch of the ETFs in the US which enabled institutional investors to jump into the asset class. The US now has a very pro crypto administration which is likely to drive the continued growth of Bitcoin and other crypto assets. "When we launched this fund three years ago we had a large number of commentators saying it was inappropriate for KiwiSaver investors to be investing in a high risk and speculative asset such us Bitcoin. Our perspective has always been that investors should be able to pick and choose where they invest their hard earned funds. Our job as a manager is to ensure that they are aware of the risks and invest appropriately to make sure that their retirement is not entirely put at risk. " Financial Markets Authority executive director of licensing and conduct supervision Clare Bolingford said there was inherent subjectivity in what would constitute value for money for investors. "In 2022, the FMA published research which showed different drivers that influence consumers' choice of the KiwiSaver provider and where the consumers see the value and benefits being delivered. In addition, FMA published this guidance on managed funds fees and value for money FMA Funds, which includes principles and useful questions to ask to assist investors.
