Arsenal suffer blow as star could be out until December
Arsenal have suffered a blow to their summer sale ambitions as the injury suffered by Takehiro Tomiyasu has halted potential plans to sell him, according to the Daily Mail.
The Gunners star has undergone surgery on his knee and his recovery could extend until December, ruling out an exit for him from the North London club this year.
Arsenal initially wanted to see how Tomiyasu would fare upon his planned return from injury before making a decision on his future at the end of the season, but the medical team decided he needed a second knee operation, and he is not expected to return until the end of 2025.
The Japan international is out of contract at the end of next season, and he could have had the chance to prove himself and earn a new deal had he not gone under the knife again.
Tomiyasu missed the start of the season as a result of an operation, only returning to action last October when he came off the bench against Southampton having recovered from a long-term knee injury.
The 26-year-old could end up leaving Arsenal for free as he will be able to sign a pre-contract agreement with a rival club from January 2026, which would be a huge blow for the club.
Gabriel Jesus is also in a similar situation as he continues to recover from an ACL injury.
The Gunners would have listened to offers for the Brazilian international at the end of the season, but his rehabilitation is due to extend into the end of 2025.
As a result, their chances of selling Jesus in the summer are as slim as they come, and they will have to look elsewhere to boost their coffers.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta needs to bolster his squad in the summer, and major sales could be necessary to get that done.
With Tomiyasu and Jesus seemingly off the market, they could be forced to sell an established star to help fund purchases having reportedly wondered for a few years if they would have to.

Palmeiras fans take over American Dream Mall before FIFA Club World Cup opener
Palmeiras fans took over the American Dream Mall on Sunday ahead of the team's first match of the FIFA Club World Cup just across the parking lot at MetLife Stadium. Posts on social media showed the Brazilian side's enthusiastic supporters in a food court area of the mall on three different levels chanting, with several seen jumping up and down or waving flags with Palmeiras' logo and colors on it. A second video posted on Reddit showed a different angle from down on the lower level as the chants reverberated around the food court area and, what appeared to be, some confused shoppers moving about the jubilation. It's the second time that fans of the team have taken over an iconic spot in the New York/New Jersey area. On Saturday night, a sea of green engulfed Times Square as Palmeiras fans flocked to the popular tourist destination to wave flags and chant in support of their team. Reddit u/Shroft Palmeiras opened the Club World Cup with a scoreless draw against Portuguese side Porto at MetLife Stadium, where even before kickoff, it seemed that the Brazilian club fans were making their presence felt. Video from inside the stadium showed a large swath of fans in one end zone area waving flags, along with holding up large banners. The region is expecting a big showing for the Club World Cup, which comes a year before the World Cup comes to the United States in 2026. During an event last week in Jersey City, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy predicted that 40,000 to 50,000 would be on hand for the match between Porto and Palmeiras, which he described as 'really cool.' MetLife Stadium is hosting nine matches during the Club World Cup, which includes the semifinal and final match of the 32-team tournament. It will also be the site of the World Cup final in 2026.

Swept by Rays, Mets look ahead to 10 games against NL East rivals Atlanta and Philadelphia
NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Mets head into 10 straight games against NL East rival Atlanta and Philadelphia after getting swept in a series for the first time this season. New York was held to one hit in 20 plate appearances with runners on base Sunday, when the Tampa Bay Rays closed a three-game sweep with a 9-0 victory. 'You hate to get swept here at home, but you've got to move on,' Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said. 'It's 162 (games), you're going to go through stretches where this is going to happen. Obviously we've got to play better. We didn't execute, we didn't play clean baseball and they made us pay.' New York hadn't been swept in 36 series of two or more games dating to last Aug. 9-11 at Seattle, its third-longest streak and the longest since a team-record 58 from May 15, 1987, through May 11, 1988. The Mets stranded 30 runners in the series and batted .148 (4 for 27) with runners in scoring position against the Rays, who are a big league best 18-6 since May 20. Starters Clay Holmes, Tylor Megill and Griffin Canning combined to throw just 13 innings for the Mets. Paul Blackburn, who will replace the injured Kodai Senga in the rotation on Wednesday, allowed four runs while getting just one out in relief on Friday. Megill and Griffin Canning gave up six runs apiece this weekend as the Mets division lead was cut to 2 1/2 games over Philadelphia. Atlanta shuffled its rotation to line up Spencer Schwellenbach, defending Cy Young Award winner Chris Sale and Spencer Strider in the series against the Mets that starts Tuesday. Ronald Acuña Jr. is hitting .390 with seven homers and 14 RBIs in his first 21 games since returning from a torn ACL. 'When you look at that team, on paper, that's a really good team,' Mendoza said. 'Obviously they've had some struggles. The three guys that we're facing, they're elite pitchers. And then you look at their lineup, they're healthy. We've got to get ready. The next 10 days, we've got to play well.' ___
