Diddle Dumpling's all-the-way success at Rosehill Gardens marks her as a stakes contender

News.com.au05-07-2025
Diddle Dumpling gave her strongest indication yet that she could be ready to fulfil her stakes potential with an impressive all-the-way success at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.
The Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou -trained filly back-to-back victories for the first time in her career with a sustained frontrunning performance in the The Agency Real Estate Benchmark 72 Handicap (1300m).
Ryan and Alexiou have always held Diddle Dumpling in high regard but have been forced to wait patiently for her to put it all together.

The daughter of Deep Field has returned a more complete package this campaign and it showed on her home track
'She has settled a lot in the brain this time around,' Ryan said.
'She had a good spell up and came back a lot stronger.
'She is a lot more settled in herself but she has always had the ability, it was just a matter of getting her to do things right.
'This time around she has done everything right.'
A wide draw saw jockey Tim Clark make the decision to push forward early and control the race on Diddle Dumpling.
He kicked a length and a half clear early in the straight and Diddle Dumpling was able to hold her rivals at bay, scoring by a length from Matthew Smith 's Golden Straand ($13) with the Michael Freedman -trained Codetta ($5.50 favourite) in third.

'She is a nice filly that can progress to a better grade,' Clark said.
'I think she can be versatile. Obviously our hand, we didn't have a lot of options out there and we had to roll with her.
'I was happy enough from out there to show my intent and generally if you show intent from out there you are a good chance of finding the front.
'She was able to do that and travel well. It took her 100m to work through her gears but when she got to her top she lengthened really well.'
Diddle Dumpling was tested in stakes grade during her two-year-old and three-year-old seasons, including finishing fifth in last year's Group 2 Percy Sykes Stakes.
Ryan has ambitions to give Diddle Dumpling another chance in better company soon.
'We would love to get black type with her,' he said.
'There are a couple of those early mares races in August-September might be alright for her.
'We will see what's around.'

‘Escort him into to bus': Fans enraged by Fremantle star's brash celebration

Alex Pearce kicked a stunning last-minute goal as fast-finishing Fremantle mustered another nail-biting comeback, the Dockers surviving a huge scare from brave Port Adelaide to score a six-point win that might just be the difference in their chase for a top-four finish. After failing to kick a goal in a listless first quarter, the Power trailed by 25 points, but summoned a barnstorming eight-goal second-quarter fightback. Ken Hinkley's men held an eight-point lead going into a tense final term With just nine minutes remaining, Patrick Voss appeared to be robbed of a clear mark that was adjudged touched, but he shook off his disappointment seconds later to give his side back the lead with his third goal, the Dockers forward shushing and waving to dismayed Port fans. You can watch the incident in the video at the top of the page With two minutes left on the clock, retiring great Travis Boak found Connor Rozee on a short lead into a pocket. The cramping Power skipper put Port up by a point, but more high drama was to come. A rushed behind tied the game up, but Pearce sailed in from the side to take a clutch mark inside the last minute, the Fremantle skipper kicking truly from 30m out to snatch a victory that moved the Dockers to a 15-6 record. After the match, Caleb Serong gave Voss a swipe over his shushing celebration with the match still in the balance. 'I don't know about the wave, only a point up and still a few minutes left, he can put that one away I think,' Serong told Fox Footy. Meanwhile Pearce joked that Voss could be a target for Port fans after his brash celebration. 'Hopefully we can just escort him into the bus and hotel without the Port fans getting into him,' Pearce said. 'He's good for footy, he's a bloke that you love playing with. He brings so much passion and energy and he's good for the game. 'He's probably a bit like (Hayden) Ballantyne to be honest ... most people that don't go for Freo want to punch him, but we all want to kiss him.' Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir admitted to mixed emotions after skipper Alex Pearce kicked a last-minute goal against Port Adelaide to propel the Dockers to another stunning comeback win that edged his side closer to a top-four finish. Longmuir's men conceded eight goals in the second quarter and trailed the Power by eight points at three-quarter time at Adelaide Oval on Saturday night, but went on to beat the Power at the venue for the first time to improve to a 15-6 record. The result made it 11 wins from 12 matches, with Fremantle coming from behind at three-quarter time in five of those games to secure victory. 'We're making a habit of doing that,' Longmuir said. 'It's mixed emotions because I'm really proud of the way we fought it out, really proud of the way we adapted to the way the game was played and what the game needed. 'But we probably had our worst 15 or 20 minutes of footy we've played for a long time in that second quarter, to concede eight goals in a quarter. 'And it was just the way we were conceding them, and the speed at which they got on top and started kicking goals, it was unacceptable clearly. 'But we just stuck at it. 'We've found it hard to beat Port here, obviously, it's our first time beating them here, so to come out on top … we made it hard on ourselves that second quarter, but in the end, all we had to do was win, and we got it done.' Pearce played his first game in a month when he led his side out against Port, and just his second match since Round 12 as he struggled to overcome a hotspot in a shin. Longmuir paid tribute to his captain's work rate and revealed his run from fullback to pull off a pivotal mark 30m out from goal was no spur-of-the-moment roll of the dice move by Pearce. 'It wasn't really a gamble, that's a set play for us where one of our talk backs goes forward,' the coach said. 'We like to do it a bit more in general play, rather than setting up at centre bounce like that, you try and get a mismatch, and he had a mismatch. 'It's still an incredible mark, I'm really proud of him for that moment, but that moment is a sign of how hard he's worked in rehab to be able to still have that run in his legs to get forward and launch at a ball like that. 'Credit to the way he's handled the last six weeks, and it was a nice moment, one that was well-needed.' BOLTON BLITZ Shai Bolton gave the visitors the start they needed when he sharked a forward 50 stoppage and snapped brilliantly, and the former Richmond premiership star soon added another when Luke Jackson forced an errant handball from Jackson Mead. Playing predominantly as a giant midfielder, Jackson was instrumental in a dominant first quarter. The towering big man led all comers at the first break with 11 possessions, two inside 50 and two score assists. The Dockers smashed the Power at the stoppages, winning clearances 13-4, with Caleb Serong and Jaeger O'Meara each with three. Coming off 98 and 88-point thumpings, the situation looked dire for the home side that didn't record a goal in the first quarter for the second time this season to trail by 25 points at the first break. BUTTERS BLAST They say unusual things can happen during a full moon, which might help explain a second quarter to remember at Adelaide Oval. After being borderline uncompetitive at times in the first quarter, Hinkley's men roared to life, recording their highest-scoring quarter for the season with 8.1 to lead by two points at halftime. Zak Butters was the catalyst with 11 touches, four clearances, and three inside 50s for the term. After struggling so mightily in front of goal, the Power blasted through three goals in three minutes, with two coming from the boot of Mitch Georgiades. Georgiades also provided a stunning highlight when he rose high above a pack on the wing to pull down a magnificent mark of the year contender. Jack Lukosius gave the crowd a brilliant goal of the year contender when he knocked the ball behind him, evaded Heath Chapman, sent Bailey Banfield the wrong way, then turned and slotted a breathtaking goal off the side of his right boot. Perhaps the most unusual occurrence in a quarter of high entertainment was a goal to Aliir Aliir. In his 112th game for Port Adelaide, the star defender had never kicked a goal, but he was mobbed by jubilant teammates after he guided his set shot through after being awarded a 50m penalty. MAGNIFICENT MURPHY Fremantle's finals chances were on dangerous ground when the Power booted the first two goals of the third quarter, including a beauty by Joe Berry from a tight angle. The Dockers managed to put the brakes on Port's scoring, but could only muster two goals themselves, both coming off the boot of Murphy Reid. His first was a neat set shot from a tight angle, but his second was right from the top shelf. Gathering a loose ball tight deep in a pocket on the wrong side for a right-footer, the young star turned for goal precious little space to work with bounced through a stunning major.

World champion Luke Littler wins Australian Darts Masters in Wollongong

Teenage world champion Luke Littler has demonstrated his phenomenal talent by winning the star-studded Australian Darts Masters in Wollongong. A year after being humbled in the final of the biggest invitation event to be played in Australia, the 18-year-old from England made no mistake this time. He won all three of his matches convincingly on Saturday night to lift yet another big title. Littler also crushed Damon Heta's homecoming dream as he defeated Australia's top player — the world number 10 — in the quarterfinals. After beating Heta 6-3 in the last eight and Stephen Bunting 7-4 in the semis, Littler outplayed Belgian Mike De Decker to win the final 8-4. In 2024, Littler had lost in the showdown 8-1 to former world champion Gerwyn Price, so was determined to put on a show for his Australian fans on his second visit. "It feels very good. It's another one I can tick off," Littler said after winning a World Series event for the first time in six attempts this year. "I played very well tonight. I didn't play so well last night in the first round but tonight is when it really matters. "It's not gone to plan this year in the World Series but there are plenty of opportunities to win and I've finally picked one up." Littler is chasing a trans-Tasman double when he moves on to the New Zealand Darts Masters. "A few days off and then Auckland, I can't wait," he said of next weekend's event. AAP

Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott pair Vauban and Sir Delius trial strongly as they begin their Melbourne Cup campaigns

They were only barrier trials but there was a lot to like about the efforts of stayers Vauban and Sir Delius. This was the summation of their trainer Adrian Bott after the $11 equal favourites for the Melbourne Cup went through their paces in Sydney last week. Vauban, the former Irish stayer, was particularly impressive showing surprising speed and holding off champion mare Via Sistina to win a 1000m trial at Randwick on Thursday. Then at the Warwick Farm trials on Friday, boom French import Sir Delius closed off his 1200m heat strongly for a close third. Bott, who trains in partnership with Hall of Famer Gai Waterhouse, said Vauban and Sir Delius are on target to resume racing in the Group 2 $300,000 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick on September 6. 'Vauban was excellent in his trial, he is showing good signs that is back feeling well and in great order,'' Bott said. 'The plan is to trial him again and then we will see him first-up in the Chelmsford. 'Sir Delius also trialled well with more improvement to come. He will have another trial and go first-up into the Chelmsford, too.'' 1⃣ Vauban 2⃣ Via Sistina 3⃣ Golden Century All the way for the @GaiWaterhouse1 & Adrian Bott import in a 1000m Randwick trial on Thursday, just holding the champ Via Sistina. Also behind them were Fangirl, More Territories & Kinesiology. @tabcomau — Racing NSW (@racing_nsw) August 6, 2025 Bott said Vauban and Sir Delius are likely to have at least two runs in Sydney this spring before going south to be prepared for the Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on November 4, Via Sistina, the Horse of the Year-elect, also shares Melbourne Cup favouritism but is a most unlikely starter in the Flemington two-miler on November 4. Trainer Chris Waller has indicated Via Sistina is being set to defend her Cox Plate title and will follow a similar spring program to last year, beginning with her comeback in the Group 1 Winx Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick on August 23. Via Sistina won the Winx Stakes 12 months ago and is $2.80 in early TAB Fixed Odds betting to go back-to-back in the $1m weight-for-age race. Fangirl, a stablemate of Via Sistina, ran fourth in the Vauban trial and is also set to resume in the Winx Stakes, a race she won two years ago. The Randwick trials session last Thursday was loaded with potential spring carnival contenders with another of Waller's all-star team, Lady Shenandoah, tuning for her Winx Stakes return with a third placing behind Palmetto. Waterhouse and Bott prepared six trials winners on Thursday, a feat equalled by the Michael Freedman stable. 1⃣ Encap 2⃣ Glint Of Silver 3⃣ Point And Shoot @TommyBerry21 gives the @GaryPortelli trained gelding a solid hit out in winning a Warwick Farm trial on Friday. Behind the placings were Sir Delius and Alalcance. @tabcomau — Racing NSW (@racing_nsw) July 24, 2025 Freedman's classy mare Manaal impressed in her trial win against a classy field including Wodeton, Clean Energy and Stefi Magnetica. 'I was very happy with Manaal's trial and she goes to the Toy Show Quality (Randwick, August 23),'' Freedman said. 'From what she has shown us so far, she is in for a good spring. There are a lot of options for her but I am looking at The Invitation and maybe the Golden Eagle.'' Freedman's other trial winners were from his talented three-year-old team including promising Pallaton and emerging duo Extractor and Ruination. Pallaton, the one-time Golden Slipper favourite last season, is set to resume in the Listed $200,000 The Rosebud (1100m) at Rosehill next Saturday. 'I've always had a good opinion of Pallaton but things went pear-shaped for him in the autumn for a couple of reasons,'' Freedman said. 'But he had a long spell and a nice build-up to this campaign with two trial wins. He's coming up well and the plan is to go to The Rosebud.'' Freedman's other Rosehill entries for Saturday include Ninja, a three-year-old part-owned by My Racehorse Syndications, who won his maiden at Kembla Grange by a stunning 11 lengths last start. MANAAL looking super impressive taking out Trial 4 at Randwick this morning. WODETON, CLEAN ENERGY & STEFI MAGNETICA all finishing together behind the winner ðŸ'€ — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) August 7, 2025 Apocalyptic, owned and trained in the same interests as Ninja, is shaping as one of the main contenders in the feature three-year-old fillies races this spring on the evidence of her eye-catching effort at last Friday's Warwick Farm trials. After being clear last on the turn in her 795m heat, Apocalyptic zoomed home wide out to finish a half-length away in fifth position even though jockey Tommy Berry never asked the filly for maximum effort. 'Apocalyptic is a lovely filly,'' Freedman enthused. 'She was one of our top seeds for the autumn but we had to stop with her. 'But she has returned in great order and I may look to trial her again before she kicks off again.'' Although Pallaton and Apocalyptic never made it to the Golden Slipper last autumn, Freedman was still able to win the world's richest two-year-old race with Marhoona. Freedman said Marhoona is still about two weeks from having her first trial with the plan for the filly to go first-up into the Group 2 Furious Stakes (1200m) at the Chelmsford meeting next month. 'Marhoona will trial at Randwick on Tuesday week,'' the trainer said. 'We have ruled out the Silver Shadow Stakes (August 23) as it is set weights with penalties which is not ideal so she will go to the Furious Stakes at level weights.'' Freedman hasn't ruled out setting Marhoona for Group 1 The TAB Everest (1200m) at Randwick on October 18. 'We haven't been approached for The Everest yet but I guess if she is in good form during the spring she might attract some slot-holder interest,'' he added.
