RTI, though being implemented, should be made fully operational, says former Union Minister
Speaking at the conference organised by the Tamil Nadu RTI Activist Movement here on Sunday, he added that when he was the chairman of the Parliamentary standing committee, he recommended that no fee be charged for seeking RTI information.
'I suggested granting information only upon request through a written letter, but eventually it was not accepted and now fee is being charged for RTI information,' he added.
Some government departments seek an exemption from providing information under RTI Act citing government secrets and personal issues of individuals, he stated.
Mr. Natchiappan noted that in the age of Artificial Intelligence, there were no secrets.
'All information can be obtained using a mobile phone. A news report states that China had occupied 10,000 sq.km of Indian territory, where houses and military installations had been built. On what basis the news agency released this information, noting that it could be found simply by using a mobile phone. There are no secrets anymore. All information is on the internet, and one can get information from the website of any government department,' he added.
Mr. Natchiappan mentioning a Supreme Court judge's statement about patriotism, he said that judges were accountable to the people and thereby, should deliver verdicts for the people.
'Their salaries and benefits are also paid with public tax money, as are those of MPs and MLAs. Therefore, people should question everyone,' he added.
Stating that the GST law was cruel, he said that they collect a tax of ₹7 for idly. 'The GST tax system generates an income of up to ₹10 lakh crore per day. 40% of this tax comes from those living below the poverty line. When people ask for tax information, should they not be given an account? The Right to Information Act has brought about many changes.'
K. Hakeem, an RTI activist and one of the organisers, said that the event was a message to the government that people, by arming the RTI, could change anything and everything.
'As a prelude to what we proclaim, we are to send 5,000 RTIs seeking information from various departments of the government,' he added.

Days after Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar held a meeting with the Qureshi community in the presence of top police officers and instructed police authorities to take note of the problems created by 'private individuals' in the transportation of legally permitted animals, the Maharashtra police has issued a circular stating only police authorities should take action against people involved in illegal cattle transport. The circular issued by Special Inspector General (Law and Order) Dr Manoj Kumar Sharma stated that many traders have submitted statements on private individuals stopping and checking when traders transport cattle, with some of them being beaten up. 'Only police or other authorities concerned should take action against people involved in illegal cattle transport as soon as they receive information. It is not legal for private individuals to stop vehicles and check/beat them (traders) up. However, if any citizen complains about illegal cattle transport, they (authorities) should immediately take legal action,' it stated. The circular further stated that it should be ensured that traders who follow all the rules while transporting animals are not disturbed. Also, legal matters should be completed regarding the return of captured animals from traders who follow all the rules and action should be taken as per the rules. 'It should be ensured that in the case of animals mentioned in the Maharashtra Animal Preservation Act, 1976 (As amended in 2015), action will be taken only under Section 8 (3) of the said Act,' it concluded. On August 6, Pawar had asked police authorities to direct district police heads to not allow private individuals to inspect vehicles transporting animals. Several delegations of the Qureshi community were present at the meeting with Pawar. It was attended by Director General of Police Rashmi Shukla and Mumbai Police Commissioner Deven Bharti along with other officials. In a memorandum of demands submitted to Pawar, the representatives of the community demanded a ban on illegal gaurakshaks (self-styled cow vigilantes), protection to transport legally allowed animals, withdrawal of false cases and clearing restrictions on transport licences. 'The Qureshi community is traditionally associated with meat trade and is a part of Maharashtra's agriculture-based economy. Therefore, no injustice will be allowed to be done to the traders of this community and the farmers who transport animals,' Pawar said in the meeting, as per the official statement from the Deputy Chief Minister's office. The delegation had raised the issue of harassment of animal traders by illegal gaurakshaks. 'The violent acts against the traders from Qureshi community and farmers who transport legally allowed animals has led to many losing their lives. The community is forced to call for a strike… Following the 2015 ban on cow slaughter, the transport is already limited. Now, the ongoing actions will affect the legal transport of animals such as buffaloes,' said the letter submitted to Pawar.

While 22 lakhs are announced dead, 35 lakhs have shifted and some are duplicates according to the EC. Who are these 35 lakhs?,' he asked. Another person said despite giving Aadhaar, bank passbook and other documents, his name appeared in the 'dead' list. Gandhi said the EC does not want to share data on these cases.

Hyderabad/New Delhi: In a major reform aimed at streamlining travel and immigration processes, the central government has announced that visas can now be issued within a single day, provided all required documents are submitted. Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar chaired a high-level review meeting with senior officials of the Foreign Affairs Department at North Block on Wednesday, focusing on visa simplification and enhanced monitoring of illegal immigrants. Officials briefed the Minister on the progress made in visa reforms. The number of visa sub-categories has been reduced from 26 to 22, and the earlier 104 sub-classifications have been streamlined to 69. As a result, the average visa issuance time has dropped significantly, with 65.15% of all visas in 2024 being issued as e-Visas. To further strengthen immigration control, two new portals — District Police Module (DPM) and Foreigners Identification Portal (FIP) — have been launched. These platforms aim to improve tracking of overstayers and illegal immigrants at the district level. The modernization of Immigration Check Posts (ICPs) was also reviewed. Officials reported that the number of ICPs has increased from 82 in 2014 to 114, including 37 air, 37 road, 34 sea, and 6 railway posts. Automated travel document scanning and biometric enrollment facilities have been introduced to expedite processing. The Fast-Track Immigration Trusted Traveller Programme (FTI-TTP), currently operational in eight major airports, allows pre-verified passengers to clear immigration in under a minute. This facility will soon be extended to seven more airports, including Kozhikode, Lucknow, and Amritsar. Additionally, the revamped OCI portal has facilitated the issuance of nearly 50 lakh Overseas Citizen of India cards. A dedicated mobile app for CAA-2019 applicants from six minority groups in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh has also been launched. Commending the officials, Bandi Sanjay directed that all reforms and public-facing services be effectively communicated at the grassroots level to ensure ease of access and transparency for citizens.
