Kolkata techie denied accommodation at Noida hotel for being Bengali
A techie from New Town, Kolkata, and his 14-year-old son were allegedly denied accommodation at a hotel in Noida's Sector 44 on Tuesday, reportedly on the grounds of being Bengali . The son, a national level skater, was in the city to participate in a championship. According to the father, who had booked a two night stay at the hotel via OYO , the receptionist refused check-in, stating that local police had instructed hotels not to allow guests from Bangladesh, Punjab, and Jammu and Kashmir to stay until August 15 due to security concerns. I was surprised. I said we were not Bangladeshis but were from West Bengal . But the receptionist said it was the same thing and that he wouldn't let us in.' The guest claimed he made multiple calls to OYO's customer service, and eventually, a representative informed him that his payment would be refunded within 7 to 10 days. He then arranged alternative accommodation in Sector 49, farther from the event venue. He had originally chosen the Sector 44 hotel because of its proximity to the skating rink, where event registrations were scheduled to begin early the next morning. OYO removes hotel from platform OYO later issued an apology and confirmed that the hotel, Meera Eternity , had been removed from its platform the same day. An inquiry was also initiated. In its statement, OYO clarified, 'OYO has neither received nor given any such guideline to hotels on its platform. OYO does not promote any form of discrimination.' Live Events No police directive to ban guests from any state When contacted, Noida DCP Yamuna Prasad said no such instructions were issued by the police. 'Hotels are told to check ID and visa documents of people from Bangladesh, but there is no directive to disallow stay to even Bangladeshi residents if they have proper papers,' he told TOI, adding that no restrictions were in place against Indian citizens from any state.

Sudip Bandyopadhyay reaffirms long-term bullish view on LIC
"There's absolutely no problem with the other life insurance players as well — whether it's SBI Life or HDFC Life — they're also worth looking at. But if I have to pick one, I would still pick LIC at this stage. As for health insurance , we are a bit cautious. The numbers for this quarter look good, but I would still be slightly guarded. So, if I had to choose one segment, I'd stick with life insurance, and LIC remains our top pick," says Sudip Bandyopadhyay , Group Chairman, Inditrade Capital . Help us with your take on the insurance pack right now because, whether it's life insurers, health insurers, or general insurance companies, we've seen a good set of results so far — at least no major disappointments from the earnings till now. What's your read on this, and within the different segments, is there any particular pocket you believe offers a good opportunity? Sudip Bandyopadhyay: Well, I have been positive on the entire life insurance space, and LIC has been our favourite for some time. This quarter's numbers clearly stand out — whether you look at the margin or the NPV. LIC has delivered a fantastic set of results, and the market is recognising that; the stock price has already moved up a bit. But from a long-term perspective, we still like LIC even at current levels. So, if I had to choose one segment, I'd stick with life insurance, and LIC remains our top pick. I also wanted your take on the healthcare space. Of course, when it comes to generic companies, there's always some uncertainty with respect to tariffs for now. But back home, if we look at domestic plays — whether hospital counters or diagnostic counters — the earnings so far haven't been too disappointing. What are your thoughts? On one side, hospital stocks have done very well over the past two to three years; on the other, given the heightened competition, diagnostic companies have been under tremendous pressure. Any particular segment where you see opportunity at this point? Sudip Bandyopadhyay: Looking at overall healthcare and pharma, our view — and it's been consistent for quite some time — is to focus on companies with a major share of business coming from India. Mankind Pharma has been our favourite, and it remains so, with about 95% of its business being domestic. Live Events You're absolutely right — we like hospitals as a segment quite a bit. The massive consolidation happening in this sector, driven by global capital, is the right way forward. It improves service quality, enhances service levels, and is happening all around us. This consolidation gives hospitals better leverage and operating margins due to scale. Apollo Hospitals , being the leader, is our favourite. They're doing multiple things right, and it's a company we believe investors should have in their portfolios. As far as diagnostics are concerned, we're a little sceptical. Competition is intense and hurting margins. Players are expanding by acquiring companies and increasing their geographical footprint, but competition remains fierce — on both price and service. With large players like Amazon also entering the diagnostic space, I would be cautious and not recommend any buys here. Valuations are also not cheap. So, it's better to stay away for now and focus on hospitals and domestic-focused pharma companies instead.
