Nvidia-backed Enfabrica releases system aimed at easing memory costs

Reutersa day ago
SAN FRANCISCO, July 29 (Reuters) - Enfabrica, a Silicon Valley-based chip startup working on solving bottlenecks in artificial intelligence data centers, on Tuesday released a chip-and-software system aimed at reining in the cost of memory chips in those centers.
Enfabrica, which has raised $260 million in venture capital to date and is backed by Nvidia (NVDA.O), opens new tab, released a system it calls EMFASYS, pronounced like "emphasis."
The system aims to address the fact that a portion of the high cost of flagship AI chips from Nvidia or rivals such as Advanced Micro Devices (AMD.O), opens new tab is not the computing chips themselves, but the expensive high-bandwidth memory (HBM) attached to them that is required to keep those speedy computing chips supplied with data. Those HBM chips are supplied by makers such as SK Hynix (000660.KS), opens new tab and Micron Technology (MU.O), opens new tab.
The Enfabrica system uses a special networking chip that it has designed to hook the AI computing chips up directly to boxes filled with another kind of memory chip called DDR5 that is slower than its HBM counterpart but much cheaper.
By using special software, also made by Enfabrica, to route data back and forth between AI chips and large amounts of lower-cost memory, Enfabrica is hoping its chip will keep data center speeds up but costs down as tech companies ramp up chatbots and AI agents, said Enfabrica Co-Founder and CEO Rochan Sankar.
Rochan said Enfabrica has three "large AI cloud" customers using the chip but declined to disclose their names.
"It's not replacing" HBM, Sankar told Reuters. "It is capping (costs) where those things would otherwise have to blow through the roof in order to scale to what people are expecting."

Google to invest $6 billion in southern India data centre, sources say

SINGAPORE, July 30 (Reuters) - Google will invest $6 billion to develop a 1-gigawatt data centre and its power infrastructure in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh in the Alphabet (GOOGL.O), opens new tab unit's first such investment in India, government sources said on Wednesday. Due to be built in the port city of Visakhapatnam, the data centre investment includes $2 billion in renewable energy capacity that will be used to power the facility, two Andhra Pradesh government sources with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters. The search giant's data centre will be the largest in capacity and investment size in Asia and is part a multi-billion-dollar expansion of its data centre portfolio across the region in countries including Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. In April, Alphabet said it was still committed to spending some $75 billion this year to build data centre capacity despite the economic uncertainty resulting from U.S. President Donald Trump's global tariff offensive. Alphabet did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment. Andhra Pradesh's information technology minister Nara Lokesh, who is in Singapore to discuss investments with thegovernment and business leaders there, did not comment on the Google investment. "We've made certain announcements like Sify, which are public," he said, referring to a 550-MW data centre Sify Technologies (SIFY.O), opens new tab plans to build in the state. "There are certain announcements which are not yet public. In October, we will make those announcements." Andhra Pradesh, a state run by a leading ally of India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was split into two in 2014, losing its former capital Hyderabad and a major revenue source to the newly created Telangana state. Andhra Pradesh has since been looking to attract investments to ease the financial strains of high debt and social spending. Lokesh said Andhra Pradesh has already been able to finalise investments in data centres with total capacity of 1.6 GW, adding that it aims to build 6 GW of data centres over the next five years from nearly zero currently. He expects the initial 1.6 GW of already agreed data centres to be operational in the next 24 months. That would be more than the 1.4 GW currently in operation in the entire country, according to real estate consultancy Anarock. "We're also working on getting three cable landing stations in Visakhapatnam. We want to create enough of cable network, which will be two times what Mumbai has today," Lokesh said. Cable landing stations - typically located close to data centres requiring fast and reliable connections to global networks - are used to store equipment which receives and relays data from undersea cables. Lokesh also said the state was looking to build up energy infrastructure to meet sustainability requirements of data centres. He said he anticipated power generation capacity requirements of as much as 10 GW from the electricity-intensive industry over the next five years. "Majority will end up being actually green energy, and that's the unique value proposition that we bring to the table," he said. Some of the additional capacity will be coal-fired, however, as data centres require reliable, high volume power throughout the day, he added.

Wells Fargo joins Wall Street chorus in lifting S&P 500's annual target

July 30 (Reuters) - Wells Fargo Investment Institute on Wednesday became the latest Wall Street research house to lift its year-end target for the S&P 500 index, citing tariff delays and strong corporate earnings. The Wells Fargo bank (WFC.N), opens new tab subsidiary sees the benchmark index (.SPX), opens new tab ending 2025 between 6,300 and 6,500, up from a prior range of 5,900 to 6,100. The target raise follows U.S. President Donald Trump delaying his reciprocal tariffs and signing deals with trade partners including EU and Japan. Earlier this month, Trump also signed into law tax and spending cuts that would benefit corporate earnings. "The dilution of tariff implementations and the new business tax provisions should improve earnings growth and investor sentiment," Wells Fargo said in a note. Earlier this month, research firms Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, Oppenheimer and RBC Capital Markets also raised their S&P 500 targets. For the year, Wells Fargo increased its U.S. GDP growth forecast to 1.3% from 1.0% earlier. The U.S. economy expanded at a brisk 3% annualized pace in the second quarter, buoyed primarily by a sharp retreat in imports and a tempered rise in consumer outlays. Wells Fargo also lifted its earnings-per-share forecast for the S&P 500 index to $265 from $260. It raised its index target for 2026 to a range of 6900-7100 from 6400-6600. The institute maintained its preference for U.S. large- and mid-cap equities over small caps and emerging markets, and reiterated its view that the U.S. dollar will remain resilient amid diverging global growth trajectories.

Lithuania coalition partner threatens to quit unless PM resigns

VILNIUS, July 30 (Reuters) - A junior party in Lithuania's government on Wednesday threatened to quit the ruling coalition unless Social Democratic Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas resigns by August 18 over business ties to a company owned by his sister-in-law. Without the centre-left For Lithuania party, which won 14 seats in the 2024 election, the Social Democrats and another junior partner, Nemunas Dawn, would be left with only 71 seats, the bare minimum required for a majority in the 141-seat assembly, and vulnerable to any further defections. The prime minister's office said Paluckas was on holiday, and declined to comment further. He has denied any wrongdoing. Opposition parties in the Baltic country have criticised Paluckas for business dealings in which a company he co-owns sold electric batteries to one owned by his sister-in-law in a deal financed by a government agency. Last week, the sister-in-law's company said it would decline the funding from the government, but denied wrongdoing. It said it made purchases from Paluckas' business following an open tender. Saulius Skvernelis, the leader of For Lithuania, on Wednesday gave the prime minister a deadline to resign by the next coalition leaders' meeting, which is scheduled for August 18. "(If Paluckas stays) we will not remain in the coalition," Skvernelis told reporters.
