Boy, 16, dies after car swerving from e-bike crashes into him

A teenager has died and another boy was seriously hurt after a car crash in Sheffield.
The 16-year-old boy was walking along Staniford Road, Sheffield, when he was struck by the car yesterday afternoon.
He was taken to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The boy's family has been informed and they are being supported by specialist officers.
Before smashing into him, the grey Audi hit an 18-year-old man, who was riding an electric bike on the road.
The cyclist remains in the hospital for treatment.
Footage shows the moment before the car and the e-bike rider smash near the kerb, with both appearing to travel on the wrong direction.
After hitting the cyclist, the car then zooms towards the unsuspecting boy on the pavement.
Shortly after, the car is spotted driving away with its front damaged.
The emergency services rushed to the scene at about 4.50pm after reports of the crash.
The Audi didn't stop at the scene, it is understood.
Detectives are investigating the collision, and two people were arrested last night.
A man and a woman, both in their 40s, were taken into custody on suspicion of assisting an offender.
Detectives asked people not share footage of the crash on social media as it could be distressing for the boy's family.
Detective Chief Inspector Andy Knowles said: 'We know that this incident will have caused significant concern in the local community, and tonight our thoughts are with the boys loved ones following this tragic incident.
'Our investigation into what happened is continuing at pace and we currently have a scene in place on Staniforth Road as we continue to piece together the circumstances.
'We are aware of speculation being shared online, as well as footage of the incident, and we ask members of the public to withhold from speculating or sharing footage which may cause distress to the boy's family.
'If you have any footage, imagery or information that may assist our investigation then please share this with us – it may form an important part of our investigation.' More Trending
People reacted to the news of the fatal crash on social media.
One person paid their respects to 'the young boy's family,' saying he used to live in the area and 'this has always been a bad road.'
Another one said: 'Incredibly sad. Condolences to the family of the young boy who needlessly lost his life. To the young man injured, I hope he makes a full recovery.'

A 16-year-old schoolboy killed in a suspected hit-and-run in Sheffield was on his way to pick up a takeaway, witnesses have said. Abdullah Yaser Abdullah Al Yazidi, known locally as Abdul, was walking along the pavement on Staniforth Road, in Darnall, when he was hit by a grey Audi on Wednesday afternoon. The car appeared to swerve towards three e-bike riders, crashing into one of them before hitting Abdul. He was taken to hospital but died of his injuries. The 18-year-old e-bike rider sustained serious injuries which are not life-threatening. Shabnam Begum, 34, witnessed the aftermath and arrived to crowds of people filming on their phones and emergency services. 'I crossed over and saw Abdul on the floor. His skin colour was pale and he had dry lips. There was screaming and shouting all around,' she told Metro. 'I went back to my home and grabbed some bedsheets and returned to cover him up. 'It was heartbreaking to witness. He was in the wrong place at the wrong time.' Shabnam has lived in the area for around 20 years and said that Abdul worked in what locals call the 'red shop' with his older brother and dad by the Al-Shafeey Centre mosque. 'His dad sent him to pick up a takeaway before it happened,' she added. The mum-of-two lives across the road from where the crash occurred and said Abdul, his dad, older brother and sister moved to Darnall to escape war-torn Yemen six months ago. Abdul's mum later joined the family once they had settled in to their new life in the UK. 'He was a very happy child who would always give it his 100% in the shop because he came from a war-torn country,' she said. 'He was a beautiful young boy. I can never forget his smile every time I visited the shop. 'I would often ask if he was ok in the shop and he would put his little thumb up.' Shabnam said that people in the community are meant to be celebrating Eid but the mood is subdued since Abdul's death. She said that speeding on the main road has been an issue for many years with many drivers going over the 20mph limit. Shabnam says she feels unsafe in the area following the crash because Abdul was hit on the pavement. 'I'm always extra careful looking both ways before I cross the road since the crash. 'It has really impacted people in the local area but what is nice is that the community has come together to remember him.' A 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. A 26-year-old man arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender has now been re-arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. They both remain in police custody. Two people, a man, aged 46, and a woman, aged 45, arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender have both been bailed pending further enquiries. A tribute to the teen posted on Facebook reads: 'The teenager who was struck by a vehicle in Darnall has been named as 16-year-old Abdullah Yaha Al-Zaidy. 'Abdullah, known locally as Abdul, was a beloved member of the Al-Shafeey Centre mosque. 'May Allah grant him the highest ranks of Jannah and grant his family and friends strength and patience during this unimaginable time. 'It is deeply heartbreaking to see his photo—a boy always smiling, always full of joy. 'He worked tirelessly alongside his father and had plans to begin college soon.' More Trending Senior Investigating Officer in the case, Detective Chief Inspector Benjamin Wood, described it as a 'heartbreaking case' which involved a 'completely innocent boy'. He confirmed a team of detectives are working at pace to piece together the circumstances which unfolded. Retired vicar admits role in 'Eunuch Maker' extreme body modification ring
A retired vicar has admitted taking part in an extreme body modification ring run by a man calling himself the Eunuch Maker. Reverend Geoffrey Baulcomb, 79, pleaded guilty to GBH with intent after using a pair of scissors to carry out a surgical procedure on a man's penis in January 2020. He was captured in a nine-second video performing the makeshift op, which involved the enlarging the opening of a man's urethra. Baulcomb previously admitted to distributing an indecent photo of a child in March 2020 and three counts of making indecent images of children on or before December 2022. He also pleaded guilty to three counts of possessing extreme pornographic images, amounting to 195 images. The images are linked to the self-styled 'Eunuch Maker' Marius Gustavson, who mutilated paying customers and streamed it online. Norwegian Gustavson, who had his own penis cut off, a nipple removed and his leg frozen so it had to be amputated, was jailed for life with a minimum term of 22 years. His penis was found in a drawer in his home almost four years after it had been amputated. Baulcomb was arrested in connection with the incident in December 2022. He was ordained as a priest in 1970 and worked in Chichester, West Sussex, according to the Church of England website. Judge Nigel Lickley KC granted Baulcomb conditional bail, ordering him not to attend any Church of England premises or functions and to have no contact with children under the age of 18. Teenager who died in ‘hit and run' had just arrived in UK ‘for a better future'
Abdullah Yaser Abdullah Al Yazidi was walking along Staniforth Road, in the Darnall area of Sheffield, on Wednesday afternoon when he was hit by an Audi car which appeared to be driving on the wrong side of the road at three electric bikes. The car also hit one of the bikes, leaving an 18-year-old man with serious injuries, before leaving the scene. Police are continuing to question a 20-year-old man on suspicion of murder and attempted murder after he was arrested in Kent on Thursday. On Friday, South Yorkshire Police said a second man, aged 26, who had been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender has now been re-arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. Relatives and friends of Abdullah said he was devoted to his family and would 'light up their faces with a big smile'. He arrived in the UK from Yemen two or three months ago, and had devoted himself to learning English ahead of starting at college in September. Abdullah's relative Saleh Alsirkal runs the corner shop on Staniforth Road which the teenager visited just before the crash. He said he had had a hospital appointment earlier in the afternoon and popped into the store, as he often did, before heading off to find some food. Mr Alsirkal said: 'His dad brought him over to change his life, to get a better future for his son, but this has happened and destroyed everything. 'God bless him. He's is in a better place than this place. Good has chosen him.' He said: 'I want to thank everybody for their support. Everyone has come together and this has helped the family.' Mr Alsirkal said Abdullah was a 'kind boy' who just wanted to look after his family, including his three sisters. He said he was really enjoying learning English. 'Every time he had a new word to learn he was so excited about it,' he said. 'It meant a lot to him and he learned quick. Sometimes he would stay in the shop just so he could talk to people. He tried to be friends with everyone.' He said: 'He wanted to be the main guy for the family. He was 16-years-old but he was a clever man. I would call him a man.' Abdullah's friend Oasmah Thabet said: 'What I can tell you for certain about him is that he really cared for his family. 'You can really tell the character of somebody by the support they give to their family. 'It just shows the gratitude he had, and he spread that gratitude to the people around that community. 'To the people who would come around and just say hello to him, he would light up their faces with a big smile.' Mr Thabet said: 'He was here for a few months and was starting the learn English as well. 'I'd like to think that we related in the sense that both our families migrated from Yemen to here. 'The reason our family came here was for a better life – to live the dream. 'For something to happen like this and for your dreams to be cut so short, it's a tragic loss for the family and it's a just a shock that can't be described.' He said that every family in the area was thinking 'what if it's my kid next'. 'That's something that no parent should ever feel,' he said. Detectives have said they believe a grey Audi drove towards three electric bikes, colliding with one rider, who suffered serious injuries which are not thought to be life-threatening, before hitting Abdullah. Detective Chief Inspector Benjamin Wood said: 'This is a heartbreaking case in which a completely innocent boy has lost his life. 'Our thoughts remain with Abdullah's family and our priority is securing justice for them. 'A murder investigation has been launched and we have a team of detectives working around the clock. 'I am renewing our message to not share footage of this incident which may cause further distress to Abdullah's loved ones.' Mr Wood asked for anyone with footage or information to contact officers and said he was keen to hear from the riders of two electric bikes who were in the area at the time. Two people, a man, aged 46, and a woman, aged 45, arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender have both been bailed pending further inquiries, police said.
