Asia shares struggle, US dollar soars on lowered Fed rate cut bets

Malay Maila day ago
TOKYO, July 16 — Asian stock markets were under pressure today while the dollar climbed to its firmest against the yen since early April, after US inflation suggested tariffs are pushing prices up, dampening expectations for Federal Reserve policy easing.
US Treasury yields ticked to the highest in more than a month, lifting the dollar against the yen in particular.
However, tech shares remained resilient following a 4 per cent rally in artificial-intelligence darling Nvidia overnight.
Brent crude continued to hover around US$69 per barrel.
Data yesterday showed US consumer prices rose 0.3 per cent in June, in line with forecasts, but the largest gain since January. Economists attributed the rise in prices across goods such as coffee and home furnishings to the Trump administration's escalating import tariffs.
The Fed has been keeping interest rates steady as it has waited for indications of the inflationary impact from tariffs, which Chair Jerome Powell had said he expected in the summer.
'We know the revealed preference of Fed Chair Powell, along with a few of his colleagues, is to wait for these tariff impacts to come through, and those in that camp are seeing that view bolstered by this data,' Taylor Nugent, senior economist at National Australia Bank, said in a podcast.
As a result, markets saw 'a fairly significant trimming of Fed expectations' for rate cuts, Nugent said.
Traders currently price in 43 basis points of rate reductions for the rest of this year, with 56.5 per cent odds of a quarter-point cut in September.
Investors will now carefully monitor producer price data due later today, looking for signs of whether inflationary pressures are also building on the factory floor.
Australia's equity benchmark South Korea's Kospi each lost around 0.6 per cent as of 0127 GMT. Mainland Chinese blue chips slipped 0.1 per cent.
Japan's tech- and exporter-heavy Nikkei was flat after alternating between small gains and losses, supported by both Nvidia's fortunes and the weak yen.
Taiwan's benchmark added 0.5 per cent and Hong Kong's Hang Seng jumped 0.8 per cent, adding to yesterday's 1.6 per cent tech-driven rally.
US S&P 500 futures eased 0.2 per cent, after a 0.4 per cent decline for the cash index overnight.
Beyond the Fed and US President Donald Trump's tariffs, the earnings season is another focal point for investors.
Results from JPMorgan Chase and Citigroup beat expectations, but were met with a mixed market response. Wells Fargo cut its 2025 net interest income guidance even as it beat second-quarter profit expectations.
Bank earnings due today include Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and Bank of America.
US 10-year Treasury yields rose as high as 4.495 per cent today, the highest since June 11.
The dollar stuck close to a multi-week high against major peers. The dollar index was little changed at 98.545 after rising as high as 98.699 yesterday for the first time since June 23.
The US currency was steady at ¥148.785, and earlier rose to 149.04 for the first time since April 3, in the aftermath of Trump's 'Liberation Day' tariff announcement.
The euro edged up 0.1 per cent to US$1.1612, trying to pull away from yesterday's three-week low of US$1.1593.
Cryptocurrency bitcoin added about 1 per cent to US$117,696, as it stabilised following its 6 per cent pullback earlier this week from Monday's all-time high at US$123,153.22.
Gold added 0.3 per cent to around US$3,332.
Brent crude futures fell 5 cents to US$69.16 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate crude futures declined 9 cents to US$66.89 a barrel. Both contracts settled more than US$1 lower in the previous session. — Reuters

Ramssol backs loss-making subsidiary to deliver US$1mil profit post disposal

KUALA LUMPUR: Ramssol Group Bhd is backing its loss-making subsidiary, Rider Gate Sdn Bhd, to deliver a profit after tax of at least US$1 million following the disposal of a 40 per cent stake to NASDAQ-listed SAGTEC Global Ltd. The company clarified that the profit guarantee applies specifically to Rider Gate and not Ramssol, correcting an earlier announcement made on July 14. "Ramssol warrants and guarantees that Rider Gate shall deliver a profit after tax of no less than US$1 million in the following one full financial year after completion," it said in a stock exchange filing. The clarification comes after Bursa Malaysia requested additional information on the terms of the proposed disposal, which involves Ramssol receiving shares in SAGTEC in exchange for the 40 per cent equity interest. Rider Gate posted a net loss after tax of RM283,722 and a net liability of RM351,818 for the financial year ended Dec 31, 2024, while SAGTEC recorded a net profit of RM6.93 million and net assets of RM17.38 million. Ramssol stated that while the share sale agreement includes the profit guarantee, it does not contain any clause specifying enforcement mechanisms should the target not be achieved. "SAGTEC is entitled to pursue any legal remedy that they see fit if the profit guarantee is not met. However, the parties have mutually agreed to operate based on a trust-based commercial relationship and understanding between themselves," it said. The company said it considers the target achievable, citing Rider Gate's commercialisation since January 2025. "With more than 150 registered dealers and the potential to grow its network to 1,000 dealers within the first year of launch, the company is of the view that the profit guarantee is realistic," it added. Ramssol highlighted that there are no liabilities, including contingent liabilities, remaining with the group following the disposal, and no guarantees were extended to either SAGTEC or Rider Gate. The fair market value of Rider Gate's software platform is estimated between RM24.26 million and RM29.49 million, based on a valuation by Strategic Capital Advisory Sdn Bhd using the discounted free cash flow to firm method.

SCCI, Maybank in pact to drive investments in Southeast Asia, with focus on JS-SEZ

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia is set to benefit from a landmark memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI) and Maybank Singapore Ltd. The MoU aims to enhance cross-border business collaboration and stimulate investments across Southeast Asia, with a strategic focus on Singapore, Malaysia and the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). Maybank Singapore CEO Alvin Lee Han Eng said with a dual-market advantage in Singapore and Malaysia, as one of the earliest proponents of the JS-SEZ, Maybank is committed to supporting businesses with a comprehensive suite of banking solutions, while identifying twinning opportunities for expansion into the zone. 'Beyond deepening economic cooperation between Singapore and Malaysia, Maybank also brings the strength of its presence across all 10 Asean markets to support SCCCI members in pursuing regional growth ambitions,' he said in a statement. The MoU signing was witnessed by Singapore's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Trade and Industry Gan Siow Huang. With Southeast Asia poised to become the world's fourth-largest economy by 2030 and a projected combined gross domestic product of US$4.5 trillion (RM19 trillion), the region offers significant growth opportunities, particularly in the digital and green economy sectors. In this regard, Malaysia positions itself as a key investment hub for Singaporean businesses due to its diversified economy. Against this backdrop, Singapore and Malaysia are working collaboratively to advance the JS-SEZ and other bilateral initiatives aimed at strengthening economic growth, improving connectivity, enhancing supply chain integration, and creating employment opportunities, therefore unlocking Southeast Asia's significant economic potential. Building on this momentum, SCCCI and Maybank will collaborate on initiatives aimed at promoting economic development, investment and trade, with the JS-SEZ as a strategic focal point. This will include jointly organising meetings, visits, conferences, workshops and networking events, while launching new initiatives to advance shared objectives. In addition, Maybank will provide tailored solutions including green lane financing, trade finance, cash management, and environmental, social and governance-linked products, and facilitate faster account onboarding for businesses. SCCCI members will also benefit from capacity-building programmes in areas such as sustainability, halal advisory, and financial services, supported by dedicated advisory services from Maybank's JS-SEZ Desk. The MoU is expected to benefit an estimated 5,000 SCCCI corporate members. SCCCI president Kho Choon Keng said this strategic partnership between SCCCI and Maybank strengthens its members' competitiveness for the future. 'In the face of an increasingly complex and rapidly changing business landscape, strong financial capabilities and deep regional insight are critical. 'By combining SCCCI's business network with Maybank's financial strength, we will help our members and local businesses access cross-border financing, build ESG competencies, and gain valuable market insights. Together, we will open up new economic opportunities and help our members and businesses succeed in Malaysia and across Southeast Asia,' he said. The SCCCI-Maybank Mid-Year Business Forum: Outlook 2025 held in Singapore today highlighted the momentum of this collaboration.
