The New York Yankees have had DJ LeMahieu playing second base and Jazz Chisholm Jr. in the hot corner on a regular basis. However, it may be time for a change.
LeMahieu has a .658 OPS and Chisholm is a better defender at second base than in the hot corner. The Yankees could upgrade their bench by moving LeMahieu out of the regular starting lineup and acquiring a starting third baseman. ESPN's Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan linked the Yankees to a trade for Nolan Arenado of the St. Louis Cardinals.
Arenado started off the year strong, but now he is hitting .251 with a .718 OPS. While he is not as great as he once was, he still plays elite defense and would be an upgrade over LeMahieu offensively.

ST LOUIS, MISSOURI - AUGUST 28: Nolan Arenado #28 of the St. Louis Cardinals celebrates with teammates after hitting a walk-off single against the San Diego Padres in the tenth inning at Busch Stadium on August 28, 2024 in St Louis, Missouri. MoreArenado is arguably the best third baseman of this generation. He is an eight-time All-Star, five-time Silver Slugger, 10-time Gold Glover and six-time Platinum Glover. He has two-plus years left on his eight-year, $260 million deal.
A defense with Chisholm back at second base and Arenado manning the hot corner would be significantly better than the Yankees' current alignment. Additionally, LeMahieu would then be on the bench, giving Aaron Boone a better option than Oswald Peraza.
While a trade for Arenado may solve the Yankees' infield woes, it would not be easy to pull off. Arenado has a full no-trade clause, and the Yankees were not on his original list of teams from the offseason that he would be willing to waive the clause for.

Yankees Announce Marcus Stroman News Before Reds Game

Yankees Announce Marcus Stroman News Before Reds Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. New York Yankees starting pitcher Marcus Stroman is playing in his age-34 season, after being selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the first round of the 2012 MLB Draft. Advertisement Stroman has spent 11 seasons with the Blue Jays, New York Mets, and Chicago Cubs before joining the Yankees, signing a two-year, $37 million deal in the 2024 offseason, with a player option in 2026. Fresh off an All-Star appearance with the Cubs in 2023, he entered New York with high expectations, yet his transition to the Yankees has been rocky. He did not pitch in the ALCS and lost his spot on the roster in the 2024 World Series last postseason, and his unwillingness to transition into a bullpen role this offseason has sparked controversy amongst fans and media. New York Yankees starting pitcher Marcus Stroman (0)Brad Penner-Imagn Images Adding to his struggles, Stroman is currently on the injured list due to left knee inflammation. He was placed on the 15-day injured list in mid-April after a start in which he recorded only two outs and allowed five runs, highlighting his ongoing challenges on the mound. Advertisement In a new announcement, the Yankees revealed that Stroman is scheduled to start Tuesday night's game for the Somerset Patriots (Double-A) as he continues his MLB rehab assignment. It was also later reported that Stroman could make a return to the Yankees' rotation that has been decimated by injuries this year (via Gary Phillips of NY Daily). Even when healthy, Stroman has struggled this season, posting an 11.57 ERA, going 0–1 in three starts, across just 9.1 innings on the mound. These struggles underscore the significant hurdles he faces in reclaiming his form as he attempts to contribute once again at the major league level. Cubs Trade Idea Ships Matt Shaw, Moisés Ballesteros for Alex Bregman

Cubs Trade Idea Ships Matt Shaw, Moisés Ballesteros for Alex Bregman originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Cubs should be aggressive at the trade deadline. At 46-32, the Cubs hold a 3.5-game lead over the Milwaukee Brewers for the National League Central and look well-positioned to go on a run this October. This crucial 2025 campaign coincides with contract years for star outfielder Kyle Tucker and President of Baseball Operations Jed Hoyer. Advertisement Neither of them is in Chicago to waste time, and adding a marquee third baseman should be atop the front office's wishlist. One option and a best fit, according to Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan of ESPN, is Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman. Here is what they had to say: 'Bregman has been an elite big league hitter since he entered the league in 2016 but has leaned more into power this year, with his highest isolated power since 2019. Most of his underlying power indicators (barrel rate, maximum exit velo, average launch angle and hard hit rate) are at career highs. His $40 million salary -- and the chance to opt into two more years at $40 million annually -- significantly shortens the list of teams that would take on his deal.' A blockbuster Cubs-Red Sox trade could look something like this: Advertisement Chicago receives: 3B Alex Bregman Boston receives: 3B Matt Shaw, C/1B Moisés Ballesteros (No. 3) Chicago Cubs third baseman Matt Shaw (6) throws to first for an out against the St. Louis Cardinals in the fourth inning at Busch Puetz-Imagn Images The Cubs have been notoriously stingy, especially given their big city, big market resources, under this ownership regime. They were outbid for Bregman's services this past offseason, but have a chance to capitalize on their miss. Bregman is currently on the 10-day injured list with a quad injury, but is not expected to miss much more time. It came at an unfortunate time as the 31-year-old is having one of his better seasons as a Big Leaguer. Bregman is batting .299 with a .938 OPS, a 159 OPS+, 11 home runs, and 22 walks to 42 strikeouts over 51 games. Advertisement Chicago does have former No. 1 prospect Matt Shaw at the hot corner, but his .219 batting average, .610 OPS, and 77 OPS+ are not going to cut it for a team with real title aspirations. Flipping him for an instant upgrade could put this team over the top. Ballesteros is another top prospect for the Cubs. Still, he is easier to sacrifice with Carson Kelly and Miguel Amaya (who is on the shelf for now) having phenomenal seasons at the plate. Boston also gets to replenish its already strong farm system and induce a mini reset on this underwhelming season. This deal would be contingent upon Bregman opting in and sticking with Chicago. There are risks involved, but Hoyer and co. are in no position to take the conservative path. Trade Idea Lands Cubs Answer at Third Base

Trade Idea Lands Cubs Answer at Third Base originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Cubs' offense has been stellar in 2025, ranking No. 2 in MLB, averaging 5.37 runs per game. The only weakness in the Cubs' lineup has been the production from third base. Advertisement Chicago have tried a few different options, but none have been able to provide consistent success. Rookie third baseman Matt Shaw has received the bulk of the work at third base. Shaw was one of the Cubs' top infield prospects coming into the season, and Chicago hoped he could grow into the future at the position. However, in 48 games and 160 at-bats, Shaw has struggled, hitting just .219 with a .313 SLG, and just a couple of home runs and nine RBI. The young third baseman struggled mightily out of the gate and was sent back down to Triple-A. When he rejoined the major league club, he had a stretch where he got hot, but he has not been able to sustain it. The Cubs' other options at third base have come from a combination of Vidal Brujan, Jon Berti, Nicky Lopez, and Gage Workman, who have combined to hit less than .160 and seven RBI in total. Advertisement ESPN's Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan put together a list of trade candidates that has Arizona Diamondbacks' third baseman Eugenio Suarez as a potential answer for the Cubs at third base. Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez (28) hits a two run home run against the Toronto Blue Jays in the second inning at Rogers Hamilton - Imagn Images Suarez is 34 years old and in the final year of his contract, so he would be a likely trade piece for the Diamondbacks at the deadline if they decide to sell. Although Arizona has been against becoming sellers all season, their wave of injuries has nearly forced them to consider all options. The Diamondbacks' third baseman is having a very strong season, hitting .251 with an .892 OPS. Suarez has hit 25 home runs on the season and leads the National League with 67 RBI. The 12-year veteran currently holds a 142 OPS+ this season, which, if it continues, would set a new career-high. Advertisement Suarez did leave the Diamondbacks' game against the Chicago White Sox on Monday after being hit by a pitch on his left hand. However, his initial X-rays came back negative, and it's been labeled as a left-hand contusion. With Suarez in the final year of his contract, the Cubs would likely be acquiring the third baseman solely for a World Series run in 2025. However, the Cubs already rank No. 2 in runs scored, and adding an elite hitter to the one weak spot in the lineup could lift the Cubs to where they need to be.
