After ScaleAI, Meta acquires voice AI startup PlayAI to boost its AI ambitions

Mint2 days ago
Meta, the owner of social media giants like WhatsApp and Instagram, has completed the deal to acquire PlayAI, an artificial intelligence startup focused on voice technology, according to a report by Bloomberg. As per an internal memo viewed by the agency, the 'entire PlayAI' team will join Meta next week.
The PlayAI team will report to Johan Schalkwyk, who recently joined the tech giant from a separate voice AI startup called Sesame AI. A Meta spokesperson confirmed the acquisition to Bloomberg but did not disclose the sum paid by the company to buy PlayAI.
As per the memo, the PlayAI team's 'work in creating natural voices, along with a platform for easy voice creation, is a great match for our work and roadmap across AI Characters, Meta AI, Wearables, and audio content creation.'
Notably, Meta has made AI its biggest priority this year, from investing in infrastructure like chips and data centres to recruiting new talent to build its latest AI models and features. The eye-opening moment for the company came with the launch of its LLaMA 4 models earlier this year, which failed to get much recognition and paled in comparison to competition from the likes of Google and OpenAI.
Since then, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced a new AI division called Meta Superintelligence Labs, aimed at achieving 'superintelligence' in AI systems before any other company. The division is led by Alexandr Wang, the former CEO of AI startup Scale AI, which Meta recently acquired for $14.3 billion.
Apart from Wang, Meta has been poaching top AI talent from the likes of OpenAI and Google, offering up to $100 million in bonuses to new employees. Among the major talent poached by the company are the makers of the GPT-4 and GPT-4o models.

Tesla drives into India: Elon Musk's EV giant opens first showroom in Mumbai; from prices to market strategy - top 10 things to know

Elon Musk owned Tesla has officially entered the Indian market with the opening of its first showroom at Mumbai on Tuesday, marking a major milestone for the American EV maker, as it unveiled two Model Y vehicles on display. The move follows a teaser from Tesla's India-focused X handle last Friday, hinting at a July 2025 launch with a post that simply read 'Coming soon,' accompanied by a graphic referencing its India debut. Here are the key highlights from Tesla's much-anticipated arrival: First stop Mumbai: Tesla's first Indian showroom, a 4,000-square-foot space located at Maker Maxity Mall in Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex, marks the company's official launchpad in the country. Situated in the heart of the city's financial hub, the showroom currently features two variants of the Model Y, a midsize electric SUV on display. Prices in India: The Model Y will start at Rs 61 lakh (on-road), with the rear-wheel drive version priced at Rs 59.89 lakh. The long-range rear-wheel drive variant comes in at Rs 67.89 lakh. High import duties bite: India's import duties on foreign cars, ranging from 70% to 110%, have been a longstanding concern for Tesla CEO Elon Musk. The on road price is almost a third more than the vehicle's starting price in the US without a federal tax credit, Bloomberg reported. Deliveries to begin later: While the car is now available for bookings, customer deliveries are expected to begin only after September 2025. Tesla plans to use the interim months to complete regulatory processes, fine-tune logistics, and strengthen its after-sales infrastructure. Regulatory nod received: Just days before the showroom opening, Tesla received formal approval from Mumbai's Andheri RTO. A trade certificate was issued on July 11, allowing Tesla to showcase, test-drive, and sell its cars within India. From Shanghai to Mumbai: The cars currently on display, and available for test drives, have been imported from Tesla's factory in Shanghai. Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy had earlier clarified that Tesla has no plans to manufacture in India for now. Delhi next stop: After Mumbai, Delhi is next in line. Tesla has plans to unveil its second showroom in the country, which will open in the capital city, expanding its footprint in India's two largest urban markets. Charging infrastructure incoming: Tesla will install its next-gen V4 Superchargers in India ahead of vehicle deliveries. These chargers can power up the car for a 267-km range in just 15 minutes. The company will also set up four charging stations in Delhi, equipped with a total of 16 Superchargers. Hopes to revive sales: Globally, Tesla's sales dipped by 13% between April and June amid growing backlash over Elon Musk's political views. The company sold 384,122 vehicles during the quarter, down from 443,956 a year earlier. India now offers a fresh opportunity at a time when demand in the US and China appears to be cooling. A two-decade journey: Tesla, founded in 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, has grown from an ambitious startup into one of the most recognisable names in the EV world. Named after inventor Nikola Tesla, the company has become synonymous with electric innovation. Tesla's entry comes on the back of India's newly announced EV policy, which offers reduced import duties and a range of incentives to global electric car makers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Elon Musk also discussed potential collaborations in April during a call, followed by a meeting in February in the U.S. With the Mumbai showroom now open, Tesla is finally set to test the waters in one of the world's fastest-growing automotive markets, marking the beginning of what could be a transformative chapter for India's EV future. Rupee posts gains as inflation cools; ends 16 paise higher at 85.82/$

The Indian Rupee strengthened sharply on Tuesday, ending a two-day losing streak, after softer retail and wholesale inflation data raised hopes of a possible interest rate cut by the central bank. A fall in the dollar index and crude oil prices also helped the currency. The domestic currency closed 16 paise higher at 85.82 against the dollar on Tuesday, according to Bloomberg. The rupee has depreciated by 0.40 per cent against the greenback in the current financial year, and has witnessed 0.24 per cent depreciation in the current calendar year. Rupee traded positively as dollar index volatility and weak crude prices provided supportive cues, according to Jateen Trivedi, VP research analyst - commodity and currency at LKP Securities. "A strong rally in the capital markets further bolstered rupee sentiment. The rupee is expected to trade in a range of 85.55 to 86.25 in the near term." India's retail inflation moderated further in June to 2.1 per cent from 2.82 per cent in May, offering room for the central bank's monetary policy committee to maintain the status quo in its upcoming reviews. The last time the Consumer Price Index (CPI) reported this mild uptick was in January 2019 -- at 1.97 per cent. The decline in food prices was mainly driven by a drop in vegetable prices and a decline in pulses. The CPI inflation came in lower, indicating a deflationary trend and offering the RBI room to consider a rate cut, although it signalled a pause in the last policy meeting, according to Anil Kumar Bhansali, head of treasury and executive director at Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP. Meanwhile, the India-US trade deal remains under wraps, with talks ongoing in Washington, Bhansali said, adding that the markets await further updates on the outcome. A fresh tariff threat by US President Donald Trump against Russia kept investors wary. Trump threatened 100 per cent tariffs on Russia if Vladimir Putin doesn't agree to a peace deal with Ukraine by early September. The dollar index, a measure of the greenback against a basket of six major currencies, was down 0.11 per cent at 97.97. Crude oil prices remained volatile as the market digested Trump's 50-day deadline for Russia, while trade tensions with other countries linger. Brent crude price was down 0.13 per cent at $69.12 per barrel, while WTI crude prices were lower by 0.25 per cent at 66.81, as of 3:30 PM IST.
