Billy Joel's wife was 'unimpressed' by his musical talents
The 76-year-old star tried to woo Alexis, 43, with his musical talents during the early days of their romance, but she was completely unimpressed by his efforts.
In the new HBO documentary series Billy Joel: And So It Goes, he explains: "I remember the first time I met Alexis, we went to my house, and I wanted to play the piano for her. It's a form of communication for me."
Billy assumed that Alexis would be wowed by his award-winning talents. However, she was unmoved when he played the piano for her.
Billy - who married Alexis in 2015 - said: "I'm playing that and she's completely unimpressed with it, totally. She couldn't care less what I'm playing and I'm thinking, 'Oh OK, this isn't working.'
"She was very unimpressed with the whole Billy Joel thing, which impressed me. Because I thought, 'OK, maybe she's just here because she likes me, not the Billy Joel guy.'"
The music star - who has daughters Della, nine, and Remy, seven, with Alexis - made a conscious effort to develop their relationship away from the spotlight.
He explained: "We had a couple years together before we had kids and he had completely stopped doing shows. We travelled everywhere. We did a motorcycle trip from Maine down to Long Island, we were on boats 24/7. We were in Europe. We had so much fun."
Meanwhile, Billy recently admitted that he was hesitant about committing to his HBO documentary.
The music icon revealed that he was reluctant to reflect on some of the "stupid stuff" he's done in the past.
He told People: "I've resisted this kind of thing for so long. I'm sick of talking about myself. Some of the stupid stuff I did, that's painful to talk about. (But) they asked me for some thematic guidance. I said, 'Just tell the truth.'"
Billy initially just wanted to get the documentary "over with" because he doesn't enjoy talking about himself.
The Uptown Girl hitmaker said: "My goal was to get it over with.
"When I do interviews, people just ask you about yourself and you get a little self-conscious about it eventually. It's almost embarrassing.
"When you're talking about your personal life detached from the material ... I suppose there's a little bit of wariness involved."

Billy Joel is adamant he's never faced a drink driving charge. The veteran musician, 76, has addressed long-standing rumours about his past in his new documentary Billy Joel: And So It Goes and he has insisted he's never been prosecuted for a DUI (driving under the influence charge) despite previous reports suggesting he got in trouble with the law after a series of motoring mishaps. He explained: "There's this rumor that I have all these DUIs. That never happened. But people keep repeating the myth. 'Oh, he's got so many DUIs.' "I never had a DUI. So f*** you. The press can be mean. So having that much attention paid to you is not easy." Joel was involved in a number of car accidents over the years - including a 1999 accident, a 2003 crash when he drove his Mercedes-Benz into a tree in Sag Harbor, New York and another smash in 2004 when he crashed his car into a house in Bayville, New York. However, Joel has since insisted the car accidents had nothing to do with alcohol and were actually linked to the "deep depression" he was suffering at the time. In a 2013 interview with the New York Times, he explained: "{The accidents had] nothing to do with the booze ... I never had a DUI in my life. That's another fallacy. "Look at the police records. My mind wasn't right. I wasn't focused. I went into a deep, deep depression after 9/11. 9/11 just knocked the wind out of me, and "I don't know even now if I've recovered from it. "It really, really hurt that man could do that to man. And then there was a break-up with somebody, and it took me a while to get me back on my feet again." In the documentary, Joel also opened up about becoming embroiled in a feud with Sir Elton John after the pop icon encouraged him to go to rehab. Joel explained: "Elton had made a comment that he thought I needed real rehab. He chalked it up to, 'Oh, he's a drunk.' And that really hurt me. "I said wait a minute? Don't you know me better than that? And there was bad blood for a little while. There was a dovetailing of things that happened during that time." Billy recalled feeling at "rock bottom" when he read Elton's comments. He said: "I was disillusioned with what I thought it was all supposed to mean. It was like all the signs were pointing to me: enough. And I wrote this letter to the band. 'I don't want to do this anymore. I'm gonna stop.'" Elton made the comments to Rolling Stone magazine back in 2011, shortly after they toured together. The singer explained at the time that they had "so many cancelled tours because of illnesses and various other things, alcoholism". Elton - who also struggled with addiction in the 70s and 80s - added: "He's going to hate me for this, but every time he goes to rehab they've been light ... I love you Billy, and this is tough love." Billy did actually spend time in rehab in 2005, and he previously acknowledged that addiction created "problems" in his life. The singer stopped drinking altogether in 2021.

Marc Maron paid $50,000 to use just one minute of a Taylor Swift song in his stand-up special. The 61-year-old comic felt he needed Bigger Than the Whole Sky - a bonus track on the 3am edition of Taylor's 2022 album Midnights - for a pivotal moment in his HBO show Marc Maron: Panicked, so he got in touch with mutual friend Jack Antonoff for help in licensing the track, and while his pal was able to offer advice on going through official channels, he couldn't obtain him a discount on the fee. Speaking on Vulture's Good One podcast, Marc said: 'I know Jack Antonoff enough to text him — and he's the co-writer on that song. 'I said, 'I don't know what's proper or how to do this, but we're running out of money on this thing. It's probably going to come out of my pocket. Is there anything you can do about this song or talk to Taylor?' 'It was doable. 'I would have gone over the minute, [but] it would have been more money." Marc didn't know if Taylor, 35, has heard the specific joke that her team signed off on letting him use the track for, but he was "manifesting" that she would like it if she had. He said: 'It had to happen. The real fear [was], like, [if] she doesn't let you use it, and then what do you do? You can't do the bit on the special.' Marc previously explained he studied Midnights on a hike while trying to "figure out" why people like Taylor's music so much. He said on his own WTF podcast in 2023: 'I'm an open-minded guy, and I like music. I [wanted] to try to figure out what it is about Taylor Swift that everyone never shuts up about." After listening to the record, he added: 'I'm like, 'Alright. I get it.' It's pop music, but it's not dance music [and] it's, sort of, emotional. There's a lot of longing and sadness and isolation and processing these overwhelming feelings of melancholy."
