Mining dept on month-long drive to recover fines, verify data
1 2 Jaipur: State's Department of Mines and Geology (DMG) began a month-long statewide campaign on Aug 2 to recover pending fines and tighten oversight in the mining sector. The department's director, Deepak Tanwar, issued strict instructions to all mining engineers and assistant mining engineers, calling for immediate action and accountability. Under the 30-day drive, officers have been directed to recover fines listed in various inspection reports. Daily progress reports must be submitted to the vigilance wing through respective zonal heads. Serious irregularities were identified in the Department of Mines and Geology Online Monitoring System (DMGOMS). According to a senior official, "Some engineers made illegal stock entries amounting to lakhs of tonnes without any actual mineral dispatch, causing substantial revenue loss. Less than 2% of the total penalties mentioned in inspection reports had been recovered so far." The misuse of e-Ravanna permits and weighbridges also raised concerns. In several cases, vehicles were shown as weighed and confirmed within just two minutes, despite routes covering up to 40 kilometres. Empty weighbridges were found issuing valid permits, and in some instances, permits from closed mines were misused to transport illegally mined minerals. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Upto 15% Discount for Salaried Individuals ICICI Pru Life Insurance Plan Get Quote Undo Tanwar instructed officials to carry out online verification of weighbridge data and initiate action against leaseholders and weighbridge operators involved in malpractice. "Any further lapses will result in disciplinary action against the responsible mining officers," the directive warned. The department also found that some officers, while preparing inspection reports against illegal mining, failed to cancel the corresponding mining leases. In some cases, proceedings under the Land Revenue Act (LR Act) were initiated despite leases still being active—an attempt seen as misleading higher authorities. DMG clarified that such action must only follow formal lease cancellation. Officers have now been asked to cancel non-compliant leases promptly, take possession, and proceed with auctions. Long-pending LR Act files in several offices have also drawn criticism. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Citizens slam delay in opening Aundh to E-Square flyover ramp
1 2 Pune: Citizens are outraged over the delay in opening the flyover ramp on Ganeshkhind Road from Aundh to E-Square. The ramp — part of Pune Metro Line 3's integrated double-decker flyover — has been completed and is structurally ready for use. However, it remains closed to the public as Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has been waiting for a formal nod from either chief minister Devendra Fadnavis or deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar for its inauguration, which is likely to be held next week. Many are outraged that the authorities are waiting for formal inauguration by political leaders, calling it "unjustified and insensitive" in the face of worsening daily traffic along the route You Can Also Check: Pune AQI | Weather in Pune | Bank Holidays in Pune | Public Holidays in Pune Officials confirmed that an invitation letter had been sent for a formal opening. The other two ramps at Pashan and Baner are still under construction and expected to be completed by Oct. "There's no logic in keeping a critical public infrastructure shut just for a ribbon-cutting event," said Rohit K., an IT employee who commutes daily between Aundh and Deccan. "We are stuck in gridlock every single day while the ramp lies unused. It's absurd," he stated. PMRDA officials told TOI that while some minor finishing touches and clearances are awaited, the Aundh ramp is ready for public use. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Most Beautiful Women In The World Undo "The inauguration request was sent to the state govt. It will be opened to the public post-inauguration," a senior official said. The 1.3 km ramp is part of a larger project designed to decongest the University Chowk junction, one of the most traffic-clogged stretches in Pune. T he integrated structure combines road and Metro Line 3 infrastructure and is intended to serve Pune's transport needs for decades to come. But the much-anticipated relief has now turned into a source of frustration. "Why do citizens have to suffer because someone wants a photo-op?" asked Medha N, a commuter. "They should open all the arms — not just one. Traffic from Pashan and Baner continues to bottleneck at University Chowk. One ramp opening won't solve the problem unless it's fully integrated." A retired urban planner from Aundh told TOI that public infrastructure should serve the public as soon as it's ready — not wait for a formal event." Metro officials confirmed that 37 km of track work—covering both directions of the 23km Metro Line 3 corridor — is complete. The remaining 8–9 km will be ready in the next two months. Trial runs are expected to begin ahead of the formal launch scheduled for March 2026. Consent-based land acquisition in Hinjewadi: PMRDA commissioner PMRDA commissioner Yogesh Mhase on Thursday assured farmers in Hinjewadi and Maan that land for road-widening projects would be acquired only through a consent-based process. Speaking at a meeting at PMRDA's Aundh office, Mhase said farmers who consent to the acquisition would receive 25% higher compensation. He said landowners would have multiple options, including direct purchase, transfer of development rights (TDR), consent-based acquisition, and incentive FSI. Cashew trade in Palasa region struggles with low profit margins
Visakhapatnam: The cashew trade in the Palasa region of Srikakulam district is facing a significant challenge due to low profit margins as prices have dipped significantly in the national market. Traders say prices of cashew kernels have dropped by Rs 100 to Rs 120 per kg in the past two months and this has led to decline in supply by around 30 to 40 percent. In the Palasa and Kasibugga localities of Srikakulam district, there are over 300 cashew processing units and all these units together produce around 60,000 kg cashew nuts per day. These units require at least 80,000 to 1 lakh tonnes of raw cashew per year. Cashew kernels from Palasa and the Vetapalem variety from Prakasam district are renowned for their rich taste. Usually, demand for Palasa cashews goes up before Raksha Bandhan and Ganesh Chaturthi festivals. "For the first time in the past few decades we are experiencing a diverse market trend in cashew trade," said Malla Rameswara Rao, president of industrial estate and owner of a cashew processing unit in Palasa. The cashew industry in the Palasa region relies heavily on imports of raw cashew nuts from countries like Ghana, Ivory Coast, and Indonesia. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like TV providers are furious: this gadget gives you access to all channels Techno Mag Learn More Undo Nearly 60 to 70 percent of the cashew kernels processed in the region are exported to various locations, including north India. However, the demand for Palasa cashew in north India has declined this season, further exacerbating the crisis. Traders attribute the decline in demand to the good yield of raw cashew and the supply of cashew kernels exceeding demand, leading to a drop in prices. The illegal import of cashew kernels from countries like Vietnam has also contributed to the crisis of the domestic cashew industry. "While the crop yield has been good this year, demand from the commercial sector has remained low. We are hoping that the demand for cashew kernels will go up in time before the upcoming festive season," said Kantarao Malla, vice-president of AP Cashew Manufacturers Association (APCMA).
