PHILADELPHIA - Flamengo began their Club World Cup campaign with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Esperance de Tunis in their Group D opener in Philadelphia on Monday thanks to goals from Giorgian de Arrascaeta and Luiz Araujo.
The Brazilian side dominated from start to finish on a chilly evening at a half-empty Lincoln Financial Field, with Esperance managing only two attempts on goal.
Flamengo opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Guillermo Varela surged down the right and delivered a pinpoint cross to Luiz Araujo, who cushioned the ball into the path of Arrascaeta to fire home.
Esperance struggled to get a foothold on the match, with Flamengo enjoying 80% possession, but they enjoyed their best moments after the break with Youcef Belaili providing a rare spark.
After curling a shot narrowly wide in the 63rd minute, Belaili forced Flamengo goalkeeper Augustin Rossi into a sharp save with a close-range effort five minutes later.
However, Flamengo quickly reasserted control to silence the lively Tunisian support behind the south goal and in the 70th minute they doubled their lead through Araujo.
Former Chelsea and Arsenal midfielder Jorginho played an incisive through ball for Araujo to break the offside trap and after cutting inside he curled a precise left-footed strike into the bottom corner.
The win puts Flamengo level on points with Chelsea at the top of Group D, after the London club also secured a 2-0 victory over LAFC earlier in the day.
Flamengo and Chelsea meet on Friday in a match likely to determine the group winner. REUTERS

LA Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani struggles in return to mound

Los Angeles Dodgers designated hitter Shohei Ohtani reacts after striking out in the sixth inning against the San Diego Padres at Dodger Stadium. PHOTO: REUTERS LOS ANGELES – Los Angeles Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani wobbled through a 28-pitch first inning at home against the San Diego Padres on June 16 in his first appearance on the mound since August 2023. Scheduled to throw as many as two innings, the Japanese went a single frame while allowing one run on two hits. He did not issue walk nor strike out a batter. 'Not quite happy with the results overall,' Ohtani said of his pitching performance, 'but the takeaway for me is that I feel good enough to be able to make the next outing.' He still wound up with a positive impact in the game. At the plate, he went 2-for-4 with an RBI double, an RBI single and a walk as the Dodgers prevailed 6-3. Ohtani was back on the mound after undergoing Tommy John revision surgery on Sept 19, 2023. His first Tommy John surgery came after his rookie season with the Los Angeles Angels in 2018, and he did not pitch in the 2019 season. 'Definitely a little bit more (nervous) than when I was solely a position player,' Ohtani added. Following a series of live batting practice sessions before games, the Dodgers elected to use Ohtani as an opener with the hope of adding an inning every time he takes the mound. He is tentatively scheduled to pitch once a week moving forward. 'That is my expectation,' Ohtani said of the pitching plan. 'But I did hit 100 (mph) today so first I want to see how my body feels and how it reacts. But the expectation is for me to go once a week and go a little longer every time I am out there so the bullpen won't be taxed.' Ohtani's fastest pitch was 100.2 mph to Padres No. 2 hitter Luis Arraez. He threw three other fastballs at 99.1 mph. Padres leadoff hitter Fernando Tatis Jr. hit with a bloop single to right on a full count against Ohtani. After a wild pitch, Arraez put runners on the corners with a bloop single to center. Manny Machado followed with a sacrifice fly to center for a 1-0 lead. Ohtani escaped further damage by retiring Gavin Sheets and Xander Bogarets on ground balls. As the Dodgers' leadoff hitter, Ohtani struck out in the first inning before he was replaced on the mound by left-hander Anthony Banda. In 86 career pitching starts with the Angels from 2018-23, Ohtani went 38-19 with a 3.01 ERA and 608 strikeouts in 481 2/3 innings. He was voted American League MVP in 2021 and 2023 for his hitting and pitching exploits, then won National League MVP last season with the Dodgers after he hit 54 home runs with 59 stolen bases. Atmosphere for Chelsea's Club World Cup opener a bit strange, says Maresca

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca said the atmosphere at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta was "a bit strange" as his side began their Club World Cup campaign with a 2-0 win over Los Angeles FC in front of swathes of empty seats. The multi-purpose stadium has a 71,000 capacity but Monday's group stage match, which kicked-off at 3 p.m., attracted little over 22,000 spectators. Atlanta is over 2,000 miles (3,220 km) away from Los Angeles, where Major League Soccer club LAFC are based. "It was a good match, a good performance," Maresca told reporters. "I think the environment was a bit strange. The stadium was almost empty. Not full." The Italian expected more fans to be in attendance when they take on Brazilian side Flamengo at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Friday. "We prepared for this game also thinking that the environment was a bit different," Maresca said. "But no doubt that the next one will be a nice one because we know that the Brazilian team, they always bring many, many fans. So we will try to be ready for the next one." Maresca was asked about what impact he expects from forward Liam Delap, who joined the club for around 30 million pounds from Ipswich Town ($40.73 million) on a six-year deal. Nicolas Jackson, Christopher Nkunku and Marc Guiu are already options for the number nine shirt at Chelsea but the 22-year-old Englishman wasted no time in showcasing his potential, setting up Enzo Fernandez for their second goal on Monday. "I am curious to see how Nico reacts (to Delap)," said Maresca. "He competed with Guiu, who is very young, during the season. They are both good number nines." Chelsea are level with Flamengo at the top of the group after the Brazilians beat Esperance de Tunis 2-0.
