"Under India's BRICS Chairmanship, we will define BRICS in a new form": PM Modi in Brazil
Addressing the BRICS Summit in Brazil, PM Modi said, 'Under India's BRICS Chairmanship, we will define BRICS in a new form. BRICS would mean 'Building Resilience and Innovation for Cooperation and Sustainability'.'
He affirmed that New Delhi would carry forward the spirit of people-centric progress during its leadership of the bloc comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
'In the coming year, under India's BRICS Chairmanship, we will continue close cooperation on all subjects,' the Prime Minister said.
Modi underlined how India's presidency of the G20 elevated the concerns of the developing world and promised a similar approach for BRICS.
'Just as during our G-20 Presidency, we ensured inclusivity and prioritized issues of the Global South in the agenda,' he said, 'In the same way, during our BRICS Chairmanship, we will take this forum forward with a people-centric approach and the spirit of Humanity First.'
This message of unity and collaboration was reflected earlier in the day, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with other BRICS leaders, partners and outreach invitees, gathered for the traditional family photo at the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro on Monday morning (local time).
The summit brought together leaders and representatives from BRICS nations and partner countries to discuss cooperation and strategic partnerships, marking a significant moment of unity and collaboration among the countries that the grouping represents.
Hosted by Brazil from July 7 to July 9, the summit saw leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and new members Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE, and Indonesia come together during the event. Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the 17th BRICS Summit being held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on July 6-7, 2025, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said in a statement.
During the summit, the leaders held productive discussions on various issues on the BRICS agenda, including reform of global governance, enhancing the voice of the global south, peace and security, strengthening multilateralism, development issues, and Artificial Intelligence.
Prime Minister Modi thanked the President of Brazil for his warm hospitality and the successful organisation of the Summit, the statement added.
In his address to the inaugural session on 'Reform of Global Governance and Peace and Security,' the Prime Minister reaffirmed India's commitment to enhancing the voice of the Global South. He noted that developing countries required greater support for sustainable development, especially in terms of access to climate finance and technology. Highlighting that the global organisations of the 20th century could not deal with the challenges of the 21st century, he underscored the need for reforming them.
Calling for a multipolar and inclusive world order, the Prime Minister stated that global governance institutions such as the UN Security Council, the IMF, the World Bank, and the WTO must undergo urgent reform to reflect contemporary realities. He thanked the leaders for highlighting the urgency of UN Security Council reform and adopting strong language on the issue in the Summit Declaration.
On Peace and Security, the Prime Minister underlined that terrorism was a grave threat facing humanity. In this context, he noted that the Pahalgam terror attack in April 2025 was not just an attack on India but an onslaught on all of humanity. Calling for strong global action against terrorism, the Prime Minister emphasised that those funding, promoting, or providing safe havens to terrorists must be dealt with in the harshest terms. He stressed that there should be no double standards in dealing with terrorism and thanked the BRICS leaders for condemning the Pahalgam terror attack in the strongest terms. Calling upon the BRICS countries to strengthen the global fight against terrorism, he emphasised that there should be zero tolerance in dealing with the menace, as per the statement.
Further elaborating on the subject, the Prime Minister noted that conflicts, from West Asia to Europe, were a matter of deep concern. He added that India has always called for dialogue and diplomacy to resolve such conflicts and was ready to contribute towards such efforts.
Addressing the session on 'Strengthening Multilateralism, Economic-Financial Affairs and Artificial Intelligence,' the Prime Minister expressed that diversity and multipolarity were valued strengths of BRICS. He stated that at a time when the world order was under pressure and the global community was facing uncertainty and challenges, the relevance of BRICS was evident. He further added that BRICS could play an important role in shaping a multipolar world.
In this regard, he offered four suggestions: one, the BRICS New Development Bank must follow demand-driven principles and long-term sustainability for granting projects; two, the group consider setting up a Science and Research repository which could benefit global south countries; three, focus must be given to making the supply chain of critical minerals secure and resilient; and four, the group should work for responsible AI--while looking into the concerns of AI governance, it should also give equal importance to promoting innovation in the field, the statement said.
After the Leaders' Session, the member countries adopted the 'Rio de Janeiro Declaration'. (ANI)

US-China talks: State Secretary Marco Rubio meets Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi; discusses 'areas of potential cooperation,' amid trade war
US State Secretary Marco Rubio with Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi (AP image) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on Friday in Kuala Lumpur, amid the trade war between the two countries. In the meeting they agreed to look for 'areas of potential cooperation' between Washington and Beijing. These high-level meetings took place amid Trump's threats to impose 10% tariffs on the BRICS countries, including China and India. Their first in-person meeting took place on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) regional security forum in Malaysia's capital. This meeting came as tensions between the two countries remain high over trade disputes, security issues, and China's support for Russia's war in Ukraine. 'Look, we're two big, powerful countries, and there are always going to be issues that we disagree on,' Rubio told reporters after the meeting. He described the talks as constructive and positive, but said there was still a lot of work to do. He also emphasised the need for better communication and trust. Rubio also suggested US President Donald Trump might visit China to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping . 'The odds are high. I think both sides want to see it happen,' he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo China's Foreign Ministry in a statement described the meeting as 'positive, pragmatic and constructive.' It further added that both countries agreed to 'increase communication and dialogue' and 'explore expanding areas of cooperation while managing differences.' Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi had called for 'jointly finding a correct way for China and the US to get along in the new era' in the statement. While trade disputes remain a major source of tension, Rubio said they were not the main topic of discussion this time. 'I'm not the trade negotiator,' he said, adding that the talks focused on other areas of cooperation. "We certainly appreciate the role trade plays in our bilateral relationships with individual countries. But the bulk of our talks here have been about all the other things that we cooperate on,' Rubio said. Rubio's meeting with Wang came less than 24 hours after he met Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov in Kuala Lumpur. There, they discussed possible new ways to restart Russia-Ukraine peace talks. These high-level meetings took place amid concerns in Southeast Asian countries about US policies, especially President Trump's threats to impose new tariffs on allies and rivals alike. Rubio emphasised that while trade remained a concern for many countries, however, security issues and China's growing domination remained crucial topics of discussion. 'Of course, it's raised. It's an issue,' Rubio said. 'But I wouldn't say it solely defines our relationship with many of these countries. There are a lot of other issues that we work together on, and I think there was great enthusiasm that we were here and that we're a part of this.' President Trump views China as America's biggest competitor, especially in trade and technology. His administration has warned about possible new tariffs on Chinese goods, though negotiations have made little progress.

Delhi scraps police clearance mandate for hotels, pools and gaming zones — Here's why it matters
The Delhi government has scrapped the mandate to obtain police permission for seven commercial activities, a notification said. In the notification released on June 30, the Delhi government said swimming pools, eating houses, hotels, discotheques, video game parlours, amusement parks and auditoriums will no longer require police permission to run their businesses. According to the notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, the move follows an order dated June 19, 2025 by Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena. 'The lieutenant governor, exercising powers under Section 28(2) read with Section 4 of the Delhi Police Act, 1978, has withdrawn the earlier sanction granted to the Commissioner of Police, for regulating these business activities under Section 28(1) of the same Act,' it said. Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora has issued a formal notification repealing the seven sets of regulations. 'Whereas vide the above said Order, the Commissioner of Police, Delhi has been directed to issue a notification repealing the said regulations with immediate effect,' the notification read. The notification was implemented with immediate effect. Hailing the move, India's former G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant called it a 'landmark reform'. 'A landmark reform. After 45 years, the Delhi Police will no longer issue licenses for restaurants, hotels, guesthouses, swimming pools, discotheques, amusement parks, video game parlours, and auditoriums,' he said. The powers have been 'rightly withdrawn', Kant said in a post on X. 'These powers, first conferred in 1980, have now rightly been withdrawn. This is a vital step in ease of doing business and promoting trust in enterprise,' he noted. Kant said, 'Less regulation means more growth, more jobs, and a more vibrant city economy.' The former G20 Sherpa urged more such reforms to fully realise the vision of ease of living. 'India must now build on this momentum. We need many more such reforms in States to realise the full promise of PM @narendramodi vision of ease of living. Congrats @LtGovDelhi for driving this reform,' Kant wrote.

Air India plane crash: Will there be a final probe report? Union minister Naidu says ‘should not jump to conclusion…'
Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu on Saturday said that the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB)'s report on the Ahmedabad-London Air India plane crash last month is based on preliminary findings and one should not jump into conclusions till the final report is released. 'This is a preliminary report, at the ministry we are analysing are coordinating with the AIBB for any support they need. We are hoping that the final reports come out soon so that we can arrive at some conclusion,' ANI quoted Naidu as saying. 'I don't think we should jump into any conclusions over this,' he added. Naidu further stated that pilots and crew are the backbone of the aviation industry and assured that all necessary steps would be taken to uphold safety standards. The civil aviation minister's statements come hours after the AAIB released its preliminary probe report that indicated a possible fuel switch as the reason behind the crash. The Air India Boeing 787-8 aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12, resulting in the deaths of 260 individuals, including 229 passengers, 12 crew members, and 19 people on the ground. The report outlines a harrowing sequence of events that unfolded within 90 seconds of takeoff, as both engines of the aircraft shut down unexpectedly during the initial climb, leading to a catastrophic loss of thrust and rapid descent, according to ANI. Flight data recovered from the aircraft's Enhanced Airborne Flight Recorder (EAFR) revealed that the fuel cutoff switches for both engines were inadvertently moved from RUN to CUTOFF, one after the other within a 1-second interval, at an altitude just moments after liftoff. One pilot was heard asking the other, "Why did you cut off?" to which the response was, "I did not." This uncommanded shutdown triggered the deployment of the Ram Air Turbine (RAT), and the aircraft began losing altitude almost immediately, unable to sustain powered flight. According to the AAIB, the pilots re-engaged the fuel switches in an attempt to relight both engines. Engine 1 showed signs of recovering thrust, but Engine 2 failed to stabilise. The aircraft, which had briefly reached a speed of 180 knots, was already descending and failed to regain altitude. The final distress call – a "MAYDAY" – was transmitted at 08:09 UTC, just seconds before the aircraft crashed into residential buildings outside the airport perimeter.
