KUALA Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has come under fire over its move to expedite the approval process for building plans and applications for development orders.
StarMetro had on June 13 reported that DBKL was working to improve its One-Stop Centre (OSC) to speed up workflow.
Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif had said that DBKL aimed to approve building plans in 21 days and development orders in 42.
'This process will involve closer coordination with 28 external agencies and eight internal departments,' she was quoted as saying.
Non-governmental organisation (NGO) Save Kuala Lumpur chairman Datuk M. Ali said the move gave the public the impression that DBKL favoured developers.
'City Hall appears to be making the OSC process more efficient for developers, but what about Kuala Lumpur residents?
'To ensure transparency, DBKL should also make the OSC portal accessible to the public,' said Ali, adding that this would allow the public to find out about potential developments happening around them.
Adrihazim: Faster approvals risk further strain on infrastructure.
Friends of Bukit Dinding chairman Adrihazim Abdul Rashid said expediting approvals for development projects risked putting further strain on the environment and infrastructure in the capital.
'While it might be good for developers, it may have the opposite impact on those affected by the projects.
'Do we really need faster project approvals when infrastructure in Kuala Lumpur can barely keep up with development?' asked Adrihazim.
Yee: Site visits crucial to ensure City Hall gets full picture of a project's impact.
Maimunah had also said that DBKL was working on enhancing platforms for digital applications, but community activist Yee Poh Ping has raised some concerns.
'Site visits to assess the full impact of a project on surrounding areas must be done before approvals are issued.
'This is to avoid over-reliance on technical reports that are submitted online, which may not reflect the situation in and around the project site,' he said.
On the recently gazetted Kuala Lumpur Local Plan 2040, the mayor had said 139 locations in Kuala Lumpur were earmarked for urban renewal projects.

NYC mayor Adams kicks off re-election bid with jabs at Mamdani, vows to ‘fix what soapbox socialists only tweet about'
NEW YORK, June 27 — New York mayor Eric Adams launched his re-election campaign Thursday by taking direct aim at the credentials of his presumed Democratic opponent, Zohran Mamdani. 'It's a choice between a candidate with a blue collar and one with a suit and a silver spoon,' Adams, who was elected in 2021 as a Democrat but is running as an independent, told supporters outside City Hall. Adams, 64, is now facing off against 33-year-old Mamdani, a self-declared socialist who on Tuesday surprisingly beat out former governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic Party primary. Mamdani's win has yet to be certified, but Adams is already campaigning against him with accusations of empty idealism and false promises of 'giving everything to everyone for free.' 'They have a record of tweets. I have a record on these streets. A record of results. They talk about problems? I fix them. That's the difference. You don't lead this city from a soapbox,' Adams said of Mamdani. Mamdani's surprise win resonated as a political thunderclap, drawing the ire of US President Donald Trump and his collaborators, who accuse the left-leaning Democrat of being a radical extremist. In response Thursday, Mamdani said he launched his campaign to target Adams's corruption and his failure to address affordability. 'New Yorkers have been suffocated by a cost of living crisis and this mayor has taken almost every opportunity to exacerbate it, all while partnering with Donald Trump to tear our city apart,' Mamdani said. He promised to 'end this era of corruption, incompetence and the betrayal of working class New Yorkers.' Adams faced a series of major federal corruption charges, but they were dropped by the Justice Department after Trump took office in January. Mamdani and other New Yorkers have accused Adams of allowing the Trump administration to conduct immigration raids in exchange for burying the charges. Polling currently shows Mamdani ahead of Adams and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa for the November election. Cuomo, though defeated in the primary, is still weighing a possible run as an independent, which could further complicate the race. — AFP

Celebrities converge on Venice for Bezos-Sanchez wedding gala
VENICE: Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and journalist Lauren Sanchez began three days of lavish wedding celebrations in Venice on Thursday, with tight security shielding their VIP guests from protesters. Bill Gates, Orlando Bloom and the Queen of Jordan were among the latest arrivals, joining Oprah Winfrey, Kris Jenner, and Kim and Khloe Kardashian. US President Donald Trump's daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner, who showed up on Tuesday, have used the extra time for sightseeing and shopping. Some 200–250 A-listers from show business, politics, and finance are expected to take part in what has been widely dubbed the "wedding of the century", estimated to cost around US$50 million. The event has stirred debate about its impact on one of the world's most beautiful cities, with protesters seeing it as an example of Venice being gift-wrapped for ultra-rich outsiders, while others enjoy the spectacle and the spending. An activist climbed one of the poles in the main St Mark's Square on Thursday, unfurling a banner with the words "The 1 per cent ruins the world" to protest against the presence of the billionaire Bezos in Venice. Guests were gathering on Thursday evening in the cloisters of Madonna dell'Orto, a mediaeval church in the central district of Cannaregio that hosts masterpieces by 16th-century painter Tintoretto. The city council banned pedestrians and water traffic from the area from 4.30pm (1430 GMT) until midnight, to provide security and seclusion for the partygoers. LUXURY CANALSIDE HOTEL Bezos, 61, and Sanchez, 55, landed in Venice via helicopter on Wednesday and took up residence in the luxury Aman hotel, where rooms with a view of the Grand Canal go for at least 4,000 euros (US$4,686) per night. They are set to exchange vows on Friday on the small island of San Giorgio, opposite St Mark's Square, in a ceremony which, according to a senior City Hall official, will have no legal status under Italian law. Some have speculated that the couple have already legally wed in the United States, sparing them from the bureaucracy associated with an Italian marriage. Celebrations will conclude on Saturday with the main wedding bash to be held at one of the halls of the Arsenale, a vast former mediaeval shipyard turned into an art space in the eastern Castello district. The "No Space for Bezos" movement is planning further demonstrations against an event they see as a sell-off of Venice, but by no means are all the locals hostile. MONEY-SPINNER Politicians, hoteliers, and other residents say high-end events, rather than multitudes of low-spending day-trippers, are a better way to support the local economy, and dismiss the protesters as a fringe minority. "If you look at what concretely the Bezos wedding brings for the good of Venice, there are only advantages and no disadvantages," Mattia Brandi, a local tour leader, told Reuters. "If anything is different, it is because of the protesters ... They don't realise that it is them who are disrupting the quiet life of the city," he added. Venice has hosted scores of VIP weddings. US actor George Clooney and human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin tied the knot there in 2014, and Indian billionaires Vinita Agarwal and Muqit Teja did so in 2011, without significant disruptions. Bezos, executive chair of e-commerce giant Amazon and No. 4 on Forbes' billionaires list, got engaged to Sanchez in 2023, four years after the collapse of his 25-year marriage to MacKenzie Scott.

Unlicensed hawkers in KL have until June 30 to apply for licences
KUALA LUMPUR: Unlicensed hawkers here until June 30 to apply for licences under Kuala Lumpur City Hall's (DBKL) Hawkers' Legalisation Initiative 2025. Mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif said hawkers could submit their applications online through DBKL's system or in person at its office or branches. "We have also set up service counters to assist those who face difficulties filling up the forms to ensure that the application process is smooth," she said in the "Apa Cerita Datuk Bandar" podcast by DBKL on June 26. Maimunah also said all applications must be submitted directly to DBKL. "I noticed that there are people who call themselves 'agents' of DBKL, attempting to sell application forms to hawkers. "DBKL did not appoint anyone and the application forms are free of charge. "Hawkers who are approached by these 'agents' should lodge a police report," she said. Maimunah added that the initiative was not only to legalise unlicensed hawkers but also to leverage the local economy in the city. "Hawkers are an important asset for the city. Therefore, it is important for them to be able to do business in a coordinated and orderly manner based on the law," she said. Applications for hawker licences opened on June 1 to mobile hawkers without vehicles and temporary hawkers, according to reports. Mobile hawkers without vehicles are allowed to sell packed food and beverages, flowers and toys, while temporary hawkers are only allowed to sell packed food and beverages within a designated roadside stall or plot with operation hours set by the mayor. Applicants will be informed if their applications are successful in August.
