DBKL plan for expedited approvals sparks concern

KUALA Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has come under fire over its move to expedite the approval process for building plans and applications for development orders.
StarMetro had on June 13 reported that DBKL was working to improve its One-Stop Centre (OSC) to speed up workflow.
Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif had said that DBKL aimed to approve building plans in 21 days and development orders in 42.
'This process will involve closer coordination with 28 external agencies and eight internal departments,' she was quoted as saying.
Non-governmental organisation (NGO) Save Kuala Lumpur chairman Datuk M. Ali said the move gave the public the impression that DBKL favoured developers.
'City Hall appears to be making the OSC process more efficient for developers, but what about Kuala Lumpur residents?
'To ensure transparency, DBKL should also make the OSC portal accessible to the public,' said Ali, adding that this would allow the public to find out about potential developments happening around them.
Adrihazim: Faster approvals risk further strain on infrastructure.
Friends of Bukit Dinding chairman Adrihazim Abdul Rashid said expediting approvals for development projects risked putting further strain on the environment and infrastructure in the capital.
'While it might be good for developers, it may have the opposite impact on those affected by the projects.
'Do we really need faster project approvals when infrastructure in Kuala Lumpur can barely keep up with development?' asked Adrihazim.
Yee: Site visits crucial to ensure City Hall gets full picture of a project's impact.
Maimunah had also said that DBKL was working on enhancing platforms for digital applications, but community activist Yee Poh Ping has raised some concerns.
'Site visits to assess the full impact of a project on surrounding areas must be done before approvals are issued.
'This is to avoid over-reliance on technical reports that are submitted online, which may not reflect the situation in and around the project site,' he said.
On the recently gazetted Kuala Lumpur Local Plan 2040, the mayor had said 139 locations in Kuala Lumpur were earmarked for urban renewal projects.

Celebrities converge on Venice for Bezos-Sanchez wedding gala
VENICE: Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and journalist Lauren Sanchez began three days of lavish wedding celebrations in Venice on Thursday, with tight security shielding their VIP guests from protesters. Bill Gates, Orlando Bloom and the Queen of Jordan were among the latest arrivals, joining Oprah Winfrey, Kris Jenner, and Kim and Khloe Kardashian. US President Donald Trump's daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner, who showed up on Tuesday, have used the extra time for sightseeing and shopping. Some 200–250 A-listers from show business, politics, and finance are expected to take part in what has been widely dubbed the "wedding of the century", estimated to cost around US$50 million. Unlicensed hawkers in KL have until June 30 to apply for licences
KUALA LUMPUR: Unlicensed hawkers here until June 30 to apply for licences under Kuala Lumpur City Hall's (DBKL) Hawkers' Legalisation Initiative 2025. Mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif said hawkers could submit their applications online through DBKL's system or in person at its office or branches. "We have also set up service counters to assist those who face difficulties filling up the forms to ensure that the application process is smooth," she said in the "Apa Cerita Datuk Bandar" podcast by DBKL on June 26. Maimunah also said all applications must be submitted directly to DBKL. "I noticed that there are people who call themselves 'agents' of DBKL, attempting to sell application forms to hawkers. "DBKL did not appoint anyone and the application forms are free of charge. "Hawkers who are approached by these 'agents' should lodge a police report," she said. Maimunah added that the initiative was not only to legalise unlicensed hawkers but also to leverage the local economy in the city. "Hawkers are an important asset for the city. Therefore, it is important for them to be able to do business in a coordinated and orderly manner based on the law," she said. Applications for hawker licences opened on June 1 to mobile hawkers without vehicles and temporary hawkers, according to reports. Mobile hawkers without vehicles are allowed to sell packed food and beverages, flowers and toys, while temporary hawkers are only allowed to sell packed food and beverages within a designated roadside stall or plot with operation hours set by the mayor. Applicants will be informed if their applications are successful in August.
