BJP Questions Law College Admission Of Kolkata Rape Case Accused Despite Poor Test Score

Hans Indiaa day ago
A new dimension has emerged in the South Calcutta Law College sexual assault case as BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya has raised serious concerns about the college admission process of one of the accused individuals. The controversy centers on questions regarding how the suspect gained entry to the prestigious institution despite allegedly poor performance in entrance examinations.
Malviya took to social media platform X on Monday morning to highlight what he described as irregularities in the admission of Zaib Ahmed to South Calcutta Law College, which operates under the University of Calcutta's jurisdiction. According to the BJP leader's allegations, Ahmed secured admission despite achieving a rank of 2634 in the Calcutta University Law Entrance Test for undergraduate programs in 2024.
The political figure questioned the fairness of the admission process, suggesting that students with superior academic credentials and law-abiding backgrounds were being denied opportunities while Ahmed gained entry with what he characterized as substandard performance. Malviya demanded immediate answers regarding who facilitated Ahmed's admission and whether any protective measures were extended to the accused.
Ahmed faces serious criminal charges alongside two co-accused individuals in connection with the sexual assault of a 24-year-old female law student. The incident occurred on June 25 within the college premises, specifically in a security guard's quarters, following the victim's rejection of a marriage proposal from the primary accused, Manojit Mishra.
Investigation details reveal that Mishra, angered by the rejection, forcibly brought the victim to the location where he committed the assault. Ahmed and the third accused, Pramit Mukherjee, allegedly remained present during the crime and recorded the incident while instructing the security guard to stay outside the room. All three individuals have been arrested and face charges related to sexual assault and criminal conspiracy.
The case has generated significant public outrage throughout Kolkata, with demonstrations occurring across the city. The incident has drawn comparisons to the previous year's RG Kar Medical College tragedy, where a second-year postgraduate medical student was sexually assaulted and murdered within the hospital premises during the night of August 8-9, 2024.
The admission controversy adds another layer to the ongoing legal proceedings, as questions arise about institutional accountability and the vetting processes for student admissions. The case has intensified discussions about campus safety, admission transparency, and the protection of students within educational institutions.
Public attention now focuses on both the criminal investigation and the administrative inquiry into how admission procedures may have been compromised, with demands for comprehensive reform to prevent similar incidents and ensure merit-based, transparent admission processes in prestigious educational institutions.

Conviction rate improved in the U.T. after three new criminal laws came into effect: Puducherry Chief Minister

The conviction rate has increased in the Union Territory after the three new criminal laws — the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam — came into effect in July last year, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy said here on Tuesday. Participating in a programme organised by the Police department to commemorate the first anniversary of replacing the Indian Penal Code with the three criminal laws, the Chief Minister said out of 654 cases instituted by the courts in Puducherry, 337 had been disposed. As many as 319 cases had resulted in conviction with the overall conviction rate pegged at 95% for the Union Territory against 75% in old criminal laws, he said. 'The new laws have been successfully implemented in Puducherry and the law and order situation has also improved. The police should take all necessary steps to maintain the present status of the Union Territory being a peaceful region,' he said. Home Minister A. Namassivayam in his address said the Police department had recruited 680 personnel to the force after the AINRC-BJP government came to power. Steps were being taken to recruit 200 maritime home guards and fill 74 posts of sub-inspectors, he said. Minister for Law K. Lakshminarayanan said the implementation of any new law would encounter 'teething problems.' However, the criminal laws were an exception as the implementation was smooth. The 'well-crafted laws' were debated properly in the Parliament for almost two years before being passed, he said. Speaker R. Selvam, DMK legislator Anibal Kennedy, Chief Secretary Sharat Chauhan and Director General of Police Shalini Singh were also present.

BJP Claims Bengal Minister Called Kolkata Rape 'Small Incident', He Denies

A West Bengal minister's statement that any incident that happens in the state is blown out of proportion has been used by the BJP to attack the Trinamool Congress and claim that he was talking about the rape of the law student in Kolkata last week. Refuting the allegation, the minister has said he was not referring to the rape and that he strongly condemns the incident. The West Bengal BJP shared a clip on Tuesday in which Irrigation Minister Manas Bhunia can be heard saying in Bengali, "The moment there is a small incident in Bengal, they say 'look the state is gone, such destruction'... Yes, incidents happen and they happen within families too. Husbands are killing their wives, and wives are taking the help of their lovers to kill their husbands when they go on vacation. These are the crises of the society (sic)." The 24-year-old law student was allegedly raped at the South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata's Kasba area on June 25 by Monojit Mishra - a 31-year-old former student of the college, who is now a practising lawyer. Two students, identified as 19-year-old Zaib Ahmed and 20-year-old Pramit Mukhopadhyay, and a security guard are the other accused, and all four have been arrested. In its text with the clip, the BJP brought up recent comments on the rape by Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Madan Mitra and MP Kalyan Banerjee - Mr Mitra had asked why the student had gone to the scene of the crime by herself and Mr Banerjee had appeared to downplay the seriousness of the crime - and alleged no woman will be safe in Bengal till the Trinamool Congress is in power. "Shame! State Minister Manas Bhunia, echoing Mamata Banerjee's stance, claims that rape is a "small incident" and that people create unnecessary noise every time such a case occurs! This is the culture of TMC. Sometimes they question the character of the rape survivor, and sometimes, like Madan Mitra or Kalyan Banerjee, they target the victim instead of standing by her, even when the rape is committed inside a state government college campus by a TMC leader," the West Bengal unit of the BJP said in the post on X. Shame! State Minister Manas Bhunia, echoing Mamata Banerjee's stance, claims that rape is a 'small incident' and that people create unnecessary noise every time such a case occurs! This is the culture of TMC. Sometimes they question the character of the rape survivor, and… — BJP West Bengal (@BJP4Bengal) July 1, 2025 "As long as the TMC remains in power, no woman in West Bengal will ever be safe," the Bengal BJP wrote. Union Minister and Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar also shared the same clip and said Mr Bhunia's comments reflect the "filthy mindset" of the Trinamool Congress. "Just like a true successor to a failed Chief Minister, West Bengal's Irrigation Minister Manas Ranjan Bhunia shamelessly referred to the bone-chilling incident of gang rape inside an educational institution as a 'small matter.' This is no different from how the Chief Minister of West Bengal, @MamataOfficial, once tried to downplay another heinous incident of sexual violence in the recent past," Mr Majumdar wrote on X. Women of Bengal have witnessed this filthy mindset of the ruling Trinamool Congress before and once again, like peeling an onion, one after another, party leaders like Madan Mitra, Kalyan Banerjee, and now Manas Bhunia are coming out with disgraceful, insensitive comments. Forget about protecting women - these remarks reflect how @AITCofficial leaders truly perceive women. And that in itself is a damning indictment!" he added. Minister's Defence Mr Bhunia denied that he was talking about the rape and said attempts were being made to defame him. "Our party strongly condemns the Kasba incident. I, Manas Bhunia, also strongly condemn it. The police have taken prompt action and made immediate arrests. Our Chief Minister does not tolerate such incidents," the minister told news agency ANI. He continued, "I would like to clarify that my previous comments were not related to the Kasba incident. They have been misrepresented and linked to the unfortunate incident in an attempt to malign and defame me. I reiterate - I strongly condemn this incident."
