Francis passed away on Monday at 88. In a final gesture, he took one last ceremonial lap around Saint Peter's Square in the
Popemobile
, completing a personal tradition that balanced his affection for humility with the theatrics of his papal office.
Pope Francis
was known to have had a well-documented love for cars; his love of
Formula 1
and affection for
Scuderia Ferrari
made him popular among followers of religion and speed.

Before he was elected pope in 2013, Pope Francis was the Archbishop of Buenos Aires, where he became renowned for relinquishing the perks of office. Instead of commuting in luxury cars, he took buses and small second-hand cars. Even as pope, he urged clergy around the world to eschew excess. In 2013, he openly chastised clergy members for owning brand-new luxury cars, reminding one of the ethical divide in a world where children are going hungry. His words sent shock waves, while Italy's top automobile makers went on showering the
Vatican
with presents.
Ferrari pomp and motorsport tributes
Pope Francis was also saluted in 2015 by being offered to become an honorary member of the Scuderia
Ferrari
Club—a tribute bestowed upon him by the team's legendary fan base worldwide. Members of the club came to the Vatican to give Pope Francis an honorary membership card, joking that they didn't need his blessing for Ferrari to win. Mercedes ironically had their year to dominate the grid in 2015, with Sebastian Vettel taking third place in the championship standings.
A few years back,
Lamborghini
gave the Pope a white and gold Huracán, Vatican colours refined. Characteristically, Francis had signed the car and sold it off for almost €715,000, the proceeds all going to charity groups.
Later still, Mercedes-Benz presented him with a Popemobile fully electric—a specially adapted G580 model—symbolising the Pope's passion for climate change and encouraging clergy to travel in electric cars.

His passing occurred on the day that Scuderia Ferrari celebrated their first podium of the 2025 F1 season when Charles Leclerc finished third in the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. It was a celebration for the team, but the sport soon went black to pay respect to a man who modestly loved it from the Vatican backrooms.

17-year-old Arvid Lindblad gets F1 exemption after Red Bull request

The FIA has granted a Formula 1 super license to Red Bull Junior racer Arvid Lindblad prior to his 18th birthday. The move comes following a request from his team for Lindblad, who will turn 18 on Aug. 8. Eighteen is the age traditionally required to hold a super license, however adjustments were made to the FIA International Sporting Code last year. The following line was added to the code: 'At the sole discretion of the FIA, a driver judged to have recently and consistently demonstrated outstanding ability and maturity in single-seater formula car competition may be granted a super license at the age of 17 years old.' The FIA announced Lindblad's new status following a meeting of the World Motor Sport Council in Macau, China. 'After considering the information presented in support of this request, the World Council found that the driver has recently and consistently demonstrated outstanding ability and maturity in single-seater formula car competition and therefore approved the request,' a statement said. Lindblad now is eligible to compete in an F1 race weekend. Red Bull currently has four drivers under contract in F1. Max Verstappen and Yuki Tsunoda are part of the senior team, while Isack Hadjar and Liam Lawson compete for the junior team.

Lucas Di Grassi shares his plan for upcoming races: 'We will go full force in these last five stages of championship'

Image credit: Lucas Di Grassi/Instagram Lola Yamaha ABT driver Lucas Di Grassi has finally shared his experience of racing in Tokyo and Shanghai. He stood fifth in the Round 9 race in Tokyo, which was his best performance in the four races held in the two cities. Sharing a video on Instagram, Di Grassi has now spoken about taking part in the two double headers and how he scored 30 points this season while his teammate Zane Maloney is still evolving as a Formula E driver. Lucas Di Grassi on taking part in Formula E races in Tokyo and Shanghai Talking about the two double headers and the Round 8 race, in which he finished 17th, Lucas Di Grassi said in the video, 'Tokyo, the most congested circuit of the year, and Shanghai, the track that everyone knows from Formula 1, with a shortcut, a short version, but a high-speed track. And two interesting results. Tokyo, the first race was in the rain, they canceled qualifying, we ended up washing up at the back, because they used the result of Free Practice 2, anyway, they canceled qualifying, so we started at the back and stayed at the back, the way it was, you can't even see a meter in front. It was a very difficult thing.' Di Grassi also talked in detail about the Round 9 race in Tokyo in which he gained 5th position. He said, 'In race 2, we were very fast in the dry. In qualifying, I was the fastest in the group, even with the Lola Yamaha car that is still under development. So it was the best qualifying of the year in terms of results, P1 in the group, ahead of Nato, ahead of a group that has a well-developed car, so it was very good. In the race, we ended up fighting for the top 10 and ended up finishing in fifth place, getting 10 points in Tokyo. 'It was very important at Yamaha's home, with the Yamaha guys there. Yamaha is increasingly involved in the championship, increasingly involved in our team, putting a lot of resources, especially for the 4th generation, which is next year and the year after. So, it was a very important race,' he added. Lucas Di Grassi called the Shanghai race the opposite of Tokyo. He finished 18th in Round 10 and 9th in the Round 11 race in Shanghai. Lucas Di Grassi on his performance this season and his future plans Lucas Di Grassi is currently in the 16th position in the 2025 Formula E Driver Standings. He summed up his Formula E season with Lola Yamaha ABT so far and said, 'So we've already accumulated 30 points this year with the team. I scored all of the points. Zane Maloney is still learning and evolving. It's very fast, but it still needs to evolve in terms of Formula E experience. So, we have 30 points, six times, seven times more than I had last year with Mahindra. So, the team is evolving. Even though it's the first year, we're moving forward.' Di Grassi is all pepped up for the next five races. Talking about the Jakarta E-Prix and the following races in Berlin and London, he said, 'I have to say that we have been working hard. Next week there will be a test. The week after that, we will travel to Jakarta. So, we will go full force in these last five stages of the championship, trying to get another podium or at least score points, get a lot of points in these next stages. Thanks for the support.' Weak demand for Mercedes G580 EV spurs plans for smaller G-Class with hybrid powertrain

The Mercedes G580 with EQ Technology is equipped with a substantial 116 kWh battery pack, providing an estimated range of 400 kilometers on a single charge. Check Offers Mercedes-Benz's ambitious entrance into the all-electric luxury SUV market with the G580 EQ evidently seems to be off to a rocky start. Since its April 2024 introduction, the all-electric G-Class has raised questions internally in the brand for sub par sales that have forced it to re-consider the futures of its electric off-roaders. Sales disappointment across regions As per a recent Handelsblatt report, top Mercedes officials have lashed out at the sales of the G580 as a "complete flop" and said that the model "sits like lead in dealers' showrooms." Since its launch, the G580 has sold just 1,450 units in Europe and a paltry 58 units in China, one of the most important EV markets for Mercedes. The situation isn't much better in Australia either, where just 156 G-Class units—including internal combustion versions—were sold until the end of May 2025. That's less than 2 per cent of Mercedes-Benz's total Australian sales and a 20.8 per cent drop compared to 2024. Also Read : India-exclusive Mercedes-AMG G 63 'Collector's Edition' set to launch on June 12 Mercedes rethinks its EV SUV strategy In response to this slow traction, Mercedes-Benz is now exploring the development of a smaller, more versatile G-Class model, internally referred to as the 'Little G'. Originally conceived as an EV-only vehicle, the new model will feature both electric and petrol-hybrid options for maximum flexibility across markets. This possible change is aided by the Mercedes Modular Architecture (MMA), which forms the basis for the next-generation CLA lineup. This platform enables smoother integration of multiple powertrain configurations, in contrast to the tailored EV platforms of the EQE and EQS—both of which have also been poorly selling. Also watch: Mercedes G 580 EQ launched in India at ₹ 3 crore. Claimed range of around 420 kms. #shorts The lukewarm reception to the G580 reminds us of the challenges that luxury players face while they transition towards electric mobility. For Mercedes-Benz, it's a blunt reminder that customer preference is hankering for diversity and versatility, but not full EV commitment as of yet. With the 'Little G' likely to have hybrid and electric versions, the company appears to be returning to reality checks—where performance, price, and utility are all relevant.
