Construction of Sindh motorways ‘top priority', says Aleem Khan
Talking to the media in Karachi, Aleem Khan announced that the M-6 and M-10 motorways would be launched simultaneously, according to a press release shared by the Press Information Department (PID).
'The M-6 is Pakistan's lifeline which was unfortunately neglected by previous governments,' he added.
The minister emphasised that the motorway would be incomplete in its utility without being connected to the C-Port and that both the M-6 and M-10 would be linked to the Karachi Port to ensure full functionality.
Highlighting the significance of the M-6 Project, Aleem Khan shared that it was a nearly Rs400 billion initiative comprising upon five sections, each approximately of 60 kilometers long.
'There is no better opportunity for investment than this project.'
He further said financing had already been secured for two sections while discussions for the remaining three were ongoing.
'We will finalise the feasibility report and present it to the prime minister within the next 15 days.'
Motorways from Karachi to Hyderabad and from Hyderabad to Sukkur would be completed as early as possible while working on the N-25 Highway from Karachi to Quetta was also scheduled to begin later this year, the minister said.
'Karachi's challenges are not just provincial—they are national issues and we will address them on a priority basis,' he emphasised.
Replying to questions, the federal minister stressed that his focus was on delivering progress rather than engaging in blame games.
'My effort is to prioritise the launch of motorway projects in Sindh, similarly, we are committed to completing the Kaghan-Naran Motorway.'
Aleem Khan said the National Highway Authority (NHA) recorded 'unprecedented growth' in revenue over the current fiscal year and attaining the target from Rs64 billion to Rs110 billion while the additional income would be utilised into improving road infrastructure and constructing new motorways.
To ensure road safety, the minister said strict measures were being implemented against dangerous driving on motorways.
'Drivers exceeding 150 km/h are not only being fined but also facing FIRs,'
Mandatory use of M-Tags was helping reduce long queues, and staffing shortages in motorway police were being addressed, he added.
Regarding his visit to Karachi, Aleem Khan mentioned that he, along with the Federal Secretary Communications and Chairman of the NHA held meeting with the Chief Minister of Sindh and assured full support from his ministry.
He also held a meeting with the business community led by Arif Habib, where investors expressed interest in participating in the development of Sindh's motorways and road networks, the PID statement read.
The minister noted that a joint team was being formed to focus on additional options for the Lyari Expressway in Karachi, including improvements to interchanges and exploration of further development projects.

Aleem visits residence of Shaheed Major Zeeyyad

The federal minister emphasised that remembering the national heroes who sacrificed their lives for the country's safety and security is a foremost duty on Independence Day. 'These heroes orphaned their own children to protect us and they are indeed the pride of our nation,' he added. Abdul Aleem Khan said that today's freedom is the fruit of the sacrifices of those martyrs who defeated the enemy on every front and taught them lessons the whole world witnessed. Abdul Aleem Khan paid homage to all martyrs, declaring that every soldier who lays down his life for the homeland is the pride of the country. He was accompanied by Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party MNA and Parliamentary Secretary, Gul Asghar Baghur. The family of Major Zeeyyad Saleem expressed gratitude to the Federal Minister Abdul Aleem Khan for his visit. Martyr Major Zeeyyad's brother, Major Hammad Saleem told the Federal Minister Abdul Aleem Khan that the martyr continued to fight the terrorists for 27 minutes after being shot. He recorded his own will and expressed his desire to be buried alongside his martyred father. Major Zeeyyad Saleem bravely fought until the end, inflicting heavy damage on the enemy. His brother further shared that the martyr had been married for only two years and was actively engaged in initiatives to support the families of martyrs, himself. Federal Minister Abdul Aleem Khan also expressed sympathy to Mrs Brigadier Saleem, the martyr's mother and prayed for courage and fortitude for the entire family. She stated that in the current circumstances, all citizens must be ready to defend the homeland. She thanked Abdul Aleem Khan for his visit and called her son's martyrdom an honour. In his remarks, Abdul Aleem Khan said that we all have to leave this world one day but what truly matters is how we depart. Industrial zone on PSM land planned
The government on Wednesday decided to establish a new industrial estate on the land of the closed Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM) and also sanctioned the diversion of Rs2.9 billion in publicity funds for the upgradation of an English news channel operated by the Pakistan Television Corporation (PTV). The decisions were taken by the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet, which met under the chairmanship of Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb. The ECC approved the establishment of the industrial estate on 3,200 acres of PSM land by changing its designated use from steel mills to industrial. The decision followed discussions with the Sindh government and deliberations in the apex committee of the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC). The ECC also rescinded its two-and-a-half-year-old decision banning the lease of PSM land to any industry, organisation, group, or individual, a move aimed at facilitating the development of the new industrial estate over the 3,200 acres. The government is also attempting to revive the closed PSM with assistance from Russia. Last month, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Industries Haroon Akhtar Khan visited Russia and held talks on the mill's revival. According to Khan, the Russians expressed willingness to finance and conduct a feasibility study for the project. The matter of pricing PSM land remains open, although the SIFC has already instructed that instead of selling land for industrial purposes, the concerned entities should issue licenses, a step that would substantially reduce costs for setting up new factories. The ECC directed the Board of Investment (BOI) to develop clear criteria and terms and conditions for the allotment of land to industrial units and private developers for the establishment of the industrial estate within one month. The government maintains that the industrial estate should not be developed using taxpayers' money and that private developers should be engaged instead. PSM owns about 19,013 acres of land in Karachi. Of this, 6,409 acres are available for setting up an industrial estate. However, the Sindh government has stated that establishing such an estate would require a change in land use from steel mills to industrial. The Ministry of Industries informed the ECC that Pakistan's regional competitors are offering a wide range of incentives to attract investment in the manufacturing sector, extending far beyond the provision of land at subsidised rates. Furthermore, comparatively higher costs of energy, power, and taxes constitute major impediments that could be offset by granting land through licenses. The ministry also noted that the PSM has accrued liabilities of around Rs400 billion and that land remains the primary source to offset these. Since the current proposal does not involve transferring ownership of the land, the option to leverage it to offset PSM liabilities at an appropriate stage would remain intact, it added. The ECC also approved a supplementary grant of Rs2.9 billion for upgrading PTV World, the English news channel owned by the state-run PTV Corporation. The decision was influenced by the context of the India-Pakistan war. Both military and civilian authorities believe the country requires more English-language channels to convey the state's narrative to foreign audiences and the diplomatic corps in Pakistan. The Rs2.9 billion will be used to modernise PTV World's infrastructure, enhancing its capacity for high-quality national and international broadcasting, the ECC was informed. The Ministry of Information told the ECC that, through its special wartime transmissions, PTV World had made a vital contribution to safeguarding national and ideological interests, boosting public morale, and projecting the courage and professionalism of Pakistan's Armed Forces on the international stage. Based on this experience, the PTV Corporation emphasised the urgent need to upgrade and modernise PTV World's infrastructure to meet the demands of emerging broadcast technologies. However, due to severe financial constraints and limited internal resources, the corporation cannot undertake this initiative independently. The government has decided to divert Rs2.9 billion from the Rs5 billion allocated in the budget for government publicity and advertisement expenditure. The finance ministry also agreed to reallocate the funds from the publicity budget. The finance ministry stated that the ECC had sanctioned Rs2.9 billion for the upgradation of its English news channel to improve broadcast quality and expand outreach to global audiences. The ECC further urged the ministry to develop a comprehensive business plan to make the channel self-sufficient and financially sustainable, thereby reducing dependence on federal grants in the future. The ECC also approved the removal of the requirement for Health Quarantine Certificates on the import and export of leather, a step aimed at facilitating the leather industry and enhancing its competitiveness in international markets, according to a Ministry of Finance announcement after the meeting. The committee additionally approved a supplementary grant for the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination for the current financial year 2025-26, enabling the ministry to strengthen initiatives for environmental protection and climate resilience through participation in the upcoming 30th Session of the Conference of Parties (COP-30) to be held in Brazil later this year.

PM orders completion of 100MW G-B solar project in one year

Photo: PID Listen to article Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday directed authorities to ensure the completion of the 100-megawatt solar power project in Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) within a year, reaffirming the federal government's full financial commitment to the initiative. Chairing a review meeting in Islamabad, the prime minister said the project would be executed on a priority basis to provide uninterrupted, low-cost, and environmentally sustainable electricity to the region, which frequently faces prolonged power outages. The premier said he would personally supervise the progress of the project, which he described as a crucial step toward ending energy shortages in G-B. He further instructed that the infrastructure be built to withstand the impacts of climate change. PM Shehbaz also directed that electricity supply from both hydropower and solar sources be strengthened to help residents cope with extreme weather conditions and power disruptions. To ensure effective implementation, Energy Minister Awais Leghari was appointed chairman of the Steering Committee overseeing the project. During the briefing, the meeting was informed that six solar parks would be established in Gilgit, eight in Skardu, and six in Diamer. Additionally, solar panels would be installed on 234 government buildings in Gilgit, 179 in Skardu, and 66 in Diamer. A real-time monitoring system for battery backup is also being developed. The project had earlier been announced by PM Shehbaz during his visit to G-B, as Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) also approved the project few days later. Separately, in a meeting with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Chairman Lt Gen Inam Haider Malik, the prime minister directed the authority to enhance coordination with provincial governments for effective response and rehabilitation efforts amid recent rains and flooding. He called for the swift operationalisation of G-B early warning system in coordination with the Ministry of Climate Change, stressing the importance of timely alerts in vulnerable areas to reduce risks during extreme weather events.
