Sukhbir Badal outraged over ex-PM's turban-less photo

Time of India2 days ago
Chandigarh:
Shiromani Akali Dal
(SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal has expressed displeasure over the circulation of an AI-generated photograph of former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, showing him without a turban.
"As a devout Sikh, I feel deeply outraged by the sacrilegious disfigurement of our late Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh's image, showing him with shorn hair without a turban. This is an outrage not only against our respected late Sikh Prime Minister but also against the Sikh community and the separate religious identity of the Khalsa Panth," said Badal.
The Akali leader demanded that the culprits be booked under Section 298 of the BNS and put behind bars immediately.

Assam Police Invoke Sedition Law in Second Case Against The Wire, Naming Varadarajan, Karan Thapar

Law The summons was issued on the very day the Supreme Court granted protection to The Wire's journalists from any coercive action in relation to an FIR filed in the state on July 11 and issued notice on the news platform's writ challenging the vires of Section 152 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. (R-L) Siddharth Varadarajan, Karan Thapar and Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Photos: File/PTI New Delhi: On August 12, 2025 – the day the Supreme Court issued notice on The Wire 's petition challenging the constitutionality of the new sedition law and protected its journalists, including founding editor Siddharth Varadarajan from any 'coercive action' by Assam Police in a case filed in Morigaon in July – the Guwahati Crime Branch summoned Varadarajan and senior journalist Karan Thapar in a fresh 'sedition' FIR filed by the state police. The summons for Varadarajan, issued by police inspector Soumarjyoti Ray under section S.35(3), BNSS, referred to an FIR (03/2025) registered at the Crime Branch, Panganj, Guwahati, under sections 152, 196, 197(1)(D)/3(6), 353, 45 and 61. However, the FIR date was not mentioned, no details of the alleged offence were provided and a copy of the FIR was not included – as the police are legally obliged to do while serving a summons under this section of the BNSS. The summons was received at The Wire 's office here on August 14. Today (August 18), an identical summons was received in the name of Thapar, for the same FIR. Claiming that 'it is revealed that there are reasonable grounds to question you to ascertain the facts and circumstances from you, in relation to the present investigation,' both Varadarajan and Thapar have been directed to appear at the Crime Branch office in Panbazaar, Guwahati on Friday, August 22. 'Failure to attend/ comply with the terms of this Notice can render you liable for arrest', the summons adds. While the FIR registered against Varadarajan in Morigaon on July 11, 2025, pertains to a complaint filed by a BJP officeholder over a story published in The Wire on June 28, 2025 (IAF Lost Fighter Jets to Pak Because of Political Leadership's Constraints': Indian Defence Attache), it is not apparent what article or video the Crime Branch FIR relates to. Even in the Morigaon case, as The Wire 's counsel Nitya Ramakrishan informed the Supreme Court, the FIR was kept a secret and it was only through well-placed sources that it became possible to learn of the complaint, the date of the FIR, and the criminal sections invoked. It was on this basis that The Wire approached the court to challenge the vires of Section 152 of BNS and the bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi issued notice. Section 152 of BNS ('Acts endangering sovereignty, unity and integrity of India') is the rebranded version of India's earlier sedition provision (Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code, Section) that the apex court stayed in 2022. Varadarajan and Thapar have responded to the summons by drawing attention to the requirement – laid down by the Supreme Court – for FIRs to be made public and copies given to the accused. They have also noted a Karnataka high court judgment which says that a police summons without a copy of the FIR accompanying it is invalid. The Wire 's legal representatives in Guwahati say there is no trace of the FIR in the magistrate's court. Reporters in Assam have also failed to get the police in Guwahati to provide any details about the new case. In their response to the summons, both Varadarajan and Thapar have said they are ready and willing to cooperate with any investigation, but the preconditions laid down by India's constitutional courts have to be fulfilled in any case. Please note, their reply says, that they "cannot be conceivably summoned and expected to answer questions on a matter, to ascertain the 'facts and circumstances in relation to the present investigation', without being supplied with the contents of the FIR to which your investigation pertains." Punjab CM Mann asks SAD chief Sukhbir Badal to 'stop boasting about fake achievements'

Chamkaur Sahib , Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday asked SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal to stop "boasting about fake achievements" of the erstwhile Akali government and asked who will take the responsibility of the incidents like the 2015 sacrilege and death of youths because of drugs. Punjab CM Mann asks SAD chief Sukhbir Badal to 'stop boasting about fake achievements' Mann was addressing a gathering after launching several developmental projects for the Chamkaur Sahib assembly segment. Sukhbir is very fond of "boasting" that a lot of development had taken place during their rule whereas he is "mum" over the incidents of Bargari and bullets fired on innocent people or the drug menace. Notably, the incidents related to the theft of a 'bir' of Guru Ganth Sahib from Burj Jawahar Singh Wala gurdwara, putting up handwritten sacrilegious posters in Bargari and Burj Jawahar Singh Wala and torn pages of the holy book found scattered at Bargari, had taken place in Bargari in Faridkot in 2015 when the Shiromani Akali Dal was in power. These incidents had led to anti-sacrilege protests in Faridkot. In the police firing at anti-sacrilege protesters in October 2015, two persons were killed in Behbal Kalan while some were injured at Kotkapura in Faridkot. Taking a jibe at the SAD president, Mann alleged that Badals had only worked for expanding their business without bothering about the state and its people. The period from 2007-2017 was the "darkest" period of the state when transport, cable, sand, drug and other mafias flexed their muscles in the state, he alleged. It is on record that the drug menace spread its tentacles after it was patronised during the Akali regime, he alleged. The state government will adopt no leniency towards the 'Jarnails' who were the perpetrators behind the "genocide" of youth through the curse of drugs, said Mann. These leaders not only used to patronise the drug trade across the state but, ironically, they even supplied the drugs in their official government vehicles, he alleged without naming anyone. Mann said a thorough enquiry has reflected that these leaders "amassed" huge wealth through the drug trade, adding that the strictest punishment will be ensured for them for this crime. Targeting the previous governments, Mann alleged that the traditional parties "mercilessly plundered" the state and its people due to which they were ousted by the Punjabis. "All the big guns of these parties like former chief ministers Parkash Singh Badal and Charanjit Singh Channi, and Akali leaders Sukhbir Singh Badal, Bikram Majithia and others were shown the door," he said. Besides, Mann said a foolproof mechanism has been adopted by the state government for the entire recruitment process due to which not even a single appointment out of more than 55,000 jobs has been challenged so far in any court. He said the state government has increased the number of beds in the Chamkaur Sahib hospital from 30 to 50 and upgraded its status from a community health centre to a sub-divisional hospital. Additionally, he said that the number of specialist doctors in this hospital has been increased from five to ten so that people can receive services from modern doctors. Previously, Mann said, there used to be only two medical officers in this hospital, but now there will be four. Likewise, the chief minister said, earlier, there was only one operation theatre in the hospital, but now another operation theatre has been constructed. He said five 'Aam Aadmi clinics' and 20 Ayushman Arogya Centres have been connected with the Chamkaur Sahib hospital. Mann said a mobile bus was also flagged off which will go to schools and help clear students' concepts in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics . The chief minister said equipped with modern facilities, this bus will increase children's interest in learning and showcase interactive activities in Science and Mathematics for students from Classes 6 to 12. He said that through this, students will also be able to perform experiments, which will spark curiosity in them. Mann also inaugurated a new sub-divisional hospital and presented sports kits to the budding players at the stadium. Committed to delivering AI-powered citizen services to one crore people by 2027: Minister

Telangana government is committed to delivering Artificial Intelligence-powered citizen services to one crore people by 2027, IT and Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu said here on Monday. The aim is to harness AI to build a Telangana where citizen services reach people even before they seek, he said, adding the government believes in being proactive, transparent and forward-looking as opposed to one that reacts after a problem arises. $5 billion AI Hub Inaugurating a three-day training programme for government officials organised by the Emerging Technologies Wing of the IT Department at the Dr. MCR HRD Institute here, he said the government's vision is to make Telangana a hub for a $5 billion AI economy, which would generate thousands of new jobs. Initiatives such as an AI City, AI University and Telangana AI Innovation Hub are being developed to international standards to achieve this, he said. Babu said the State is the first in the country to launch an AI-driven Telangana Data Exchange (TGDeX) that is now serving as a role model for other States. Building on this momentum, the government is working to make over 300 citizen services across 20 departments available through AI-powered platforms. The Minister's office in a release on the 'AI-led Digital Transformation – Champions and Catalysts' training programme said 250 officials from 20 departments have been selected for specialised AI training. Over the next three months, the officials will be mentored by AI experts to help them integrate emerging technologies into governance and service delivery. Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao, Special Chief Secretary Sanjay Kumar, Deputy Secretary Bhavesh Mishra and other senior officials were present at the launch. A first-of-its-kind effort to institutionalise AI-readiness across the State's governance ecosystem, the programme aims to create internal capacity to harness AI for improving service delivery, operational efficiency, and policy effectiveness while fostering collaboration across departments and enabling scalable adoption of AI in governance. The programme will equip the officers with AI fundamentals, data readiness skills and exposure to no-code tools and agile solution development.
