
Dotcom lessons loom over AI-fuelled Wall Street surge
The growing concentration in United States equities instantly brings to mind the Internet and communications frenzy of the late 1990s.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq peaked in March 2000 before cratering 65 per cent over the following 12 months. And it didn't revisit its previous high for 14 years.
It seems unlikely that we will see a repeat of this today, right?
Maybe. The market's reaction function appears to be different from what it was during the dotcom boom and bust. Just look at the current rebound from its post-"Liberation Day" tariff slump in early April — one of the fastest on record — or its rally during the Covid-19 pandemic.
But despite all of these differences, there are also some worrying parallels. Investors would do well to keep both in mind.
The most obvious similarity between these two periods is the concentration of tech and related industries in US equity markets.
The broad tech sector now accounts for 34 per cent of the S&P 500's market cap, according to some data, exceeding the previous record of 33 per cent set in March 2000.
Of the top 10 companies by market capitalisation today, eight are tech or communications behemoths. They include Apple, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia and Tesla — as well as Berkshire Hathaway and JPMorgan.
By contrast, only five of the 10 biggest companies in 1999 were tech firms. The other five were General Electric, Citi, Exxon, Walmart and Home Depot.
Plus, the top 10 companies' footprint in the S&P 500 today is much larger than it was back then. The combined market cap of the top 10 today is almost US$22 trillion, or 40 per cent of the index's total, significantly higher than the comparable 25 per cent in 1999.
This all reflects the fact that technology plays a much bigger role in the US economy today.
By some measures, the current tech boom, driven in part by enthusiasm for artificial intelligence (AI), is more extreme than the information technology bubble of the late 1990s.
As Torsten Slok, chief economist at Apollo Global Management, points out, the 12-month forward earnings valuation of today's top 10 stocks in the S&P 500 is higher than it was 25 years ago.
However, it's worth remembering that the dotcom bubble was characterised by a frenzy of public offerings and a raft of companies with shares valued at triple-digit multiples of future earnings. That's not the case today.
While the S&P tech sector is trading at 29.5 times forward earnings today, which is high by historical standards, this is nowhere near the peak of almost 50 times recorded in 2000.
Similarly, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq are currently trading around 22 and 28.5 times forward earnings, compared with the dotcom peaks of 24.5 and over 70 times, respectively.
With all that being said, a meaningful, prolonged market correction cannot be ruled out, especially if AI-driven growth isn't delivered as quickly as investors expect.
AI, the new driver of technological development, will require vast capital outlays, especially on data centres, which may mean that earnings and share price growth in tech could slow in the short run.
According to Morgan Stanley, the transformative potential of generative AI will require roughly US$2.9 trillion of global data centre spending through 2028, comprising US$1.6 trillion on hardware like chips and servers and US$1.3 trillion on infrastructure.
That means investment needs of over US$900 billion in 2028, they reckon. For context, combined capital expenditure by all S&P 500 companies last year was around US$950 billion.
Wall Street analysts are well aware of these figures, which suggests that at least some percentage of these huge sums should be factored into current share prices and expected earnings, but what if the benefits of AI take longer to deliver?
Or what if an upstart (remember China's DeepSeek?) dramatically shifts growth expectations for a major component of the index, like US$4-trillion chipmaker Nvidia?
Of course, technology is so fundamental to today's society and economy that it's difficult to imagine its market footprint shrinking too much, for too long, as this raises the inevitable question of where investor capital would go.

Russia launches direct flights to North Korea amid closer ties
MOSCOW: Russia initiated direct commercial flights to North Korea on Sunday, marking a significant step in deepening relations between the two nations. The first flight, operated by Nordwind Airlines, departed Moscow for Pyongyang, with tickets priced at 45,000 rubles (\$570). Global stocks mostly rise on trade deal hopes while Tesla plummets

(AP pic) NEW YORK : Stock markets mostly bumped upwards Thursday as hopes grew that the European Union could strike a trade deal with the United States, while Tesla shares nosedived on poor earnings results. Investors have profited in recent weeks from wagers that governments will eventually hammer out pacts with Donald Trump ahead of the US president's looming August 1 deadline to avoid steeper levies. 'Buyers are in control and there remains a lot of optimism about future trade deals,' said Adam Sarhan of 50 Park Investments. 'For now the market is choosing to look at the bullish side of the coin,' he said. 'Not the bearish side and not the neutral side.' On Wall Street, both the S&P 500 and tech-heavy Nasdaq edged higher to close at fresh records, while the Dow retreated. Google parent Alphabet climbed 0.9% after reporting a whopping US$28.2 billion in second-quarter profits as it touted its artificial intelligence offerings. But Tesla fell 8.2% as CEO Elon Musk warned investors of a rough patch for earnings after the electric car maker reported a 16% drop in quarterly profits. A survey of US manufacturers released Thursday showed business confidence in the world's top economy also deteriorated in July for the second month running. 'Companies cite ongoing concerns over the impact of government policies, notably in terms of both tariffs and cuts to federal spending,' said Chris Williamson, chief business economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence. In Europe, London's FTSE 100 gained 0.9% at the close, lifted by a stream of robust earnings, including from consumer goods group Reckitt, mobile phone giant Vodafone and Lloyds bank. Paris fell, dragged down by a drop in luxury stocks and disappointing profits from fossil fuel giant TotalEnergies. Yet most other European stocks markets including Frankfurt rose, as the European Union and Washington appeared close to a deal that would halve a threatened 30% levy on EU goods to 15%. A European Commission spokesman said Thursday that he believed a trade deal with the US is 'within reach.' According to multiple diplomats, the deal could waive tariffs on aircraft, lumber, pharmaceutical products and agricultural goods. The bloc, however, is still forging ahead with contingency plans in case talks fail, with member states approving a €93 billion (US$109-billion) package of counter-tariffs on US goods. Meanwhile, the European Central Bank left interest rates unchanged, as widely expected. It warned that the economic environment remained 'exceptionally uncertain, especially because of trade disputes' as higher US tariffs hang in the balance. The euro dipped a touch following Thursday's rate decision, but it did perk up after ECB President Christine Lagarde said the central bank was monitoring the dollar-euro exchange rate but had no target. The euro's appreciation helps contain inflation but could harm European exports and thus slow already sluggish economic growth. US stock futures pause after record S&P 500, Nasdaq run

(AP pic) NEW YORK : Wall Street futures held steady today as investors took a breather following record closes for the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq in the previous session and awaited clarity on trade negotiations ahead of next week's tariff deadline. At 5.41am, Dow E-minis rose 61 points, or 0.14%, S&P 500 E-minis were up 5.75 points, or 0.09%, and Nasdaq 100 E-minis were down 1.75 points, or 0.01%. The blue-chip Dow fell 0.7% in yesterday's session, but remained close to its all-time high, last hit in December. All three major indexes were on track to end the week on a positive note as recent trade deals between the US and its trading partners, including Japan, Indonesia and the Philippines, helped propel markets to new highs. An agreement with the EU was in the pipeline, while talks with South Korea were underway as next week's Aug 1 deadline for many countries looms, with investors hoping that steep US import levies could be averted. The recent climb to a series of record highs was also aided by upbeat second quarter (Q2) earnings. Of the 152 companies in the S&P 500 that reported earnings as of yesterday, 80.3% reported above analyst expectations, according to data compiled by LSEG. US President Donald Trump – a staunch critic of Fed chair Jerome Powell – made a rare presidential visit to the central bank's headquarters yesterday, where he criticised its US$2.5-billion renovation project. This marked another escalation in Trump's efforts to pressure Powell into cutting interest rates. The president has often mused in the past about firing the top policymaker and replacing him with someone more willing to cut borrowing costs. According to the CME FedWatch tool, traders are pricing in a 58.6% chance of a reduction in September. Among other stocks, Newmont added 2% after the gold miner surpassed Wall Street expectations for Q2 profit. Meanwhile, Paramount Global rose 2% after US regulators approved its US$8.4 billion merger with Skydance Media.
