Florida softball beats Georgia Bulldogs in Super Regionals, advances to WCWS
The Florida softball program earned its second-straight trip to the Women's College World Series on Sunday with a win over the Georgia Bulldogs in Game 3 of the 2025 Super Regionals, 5-2, inside Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium. It will also be the Orange and Blue's 13th appearance in the WCWS over the past two decades spanning coach Tim Walton's tenure in Gainesville.
Freshman outfielder Taylor Shumaker hit the second of Florida's two fifth-inning home runs — her 22nd of the season — tying the single-season school record for both homers and RBI to help catapult the third-seeded Gators into the next phase of the postseason. She will make her first appearance in Oklahoma City touting a .389 batting average this season.
Senior shortstop Rylee Holtorf smacked a two-run shot before Shumaker's dinger, marking a pivotal moment in the game. Prior to her going yard, Florida's offense had scored just two runs through 11 2/3 frames over the previous two games and had left 23 runners on base.
Sophomore hurler Keagan Rothrock threw all seven frames for her 16th win this season, holding the 'Dawgs to two runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk while striking out five with 94 pitches. She worked with a lead all game long and was only bitten only at the very end of her outing by a two-run dinger.
With the win, the Gators improved to 7-1 all-time in Super Regional Game 3s, with all but one of those series coming at home.
Tim Walton's opening statement
"Congratulations to Georgia on an outstanding postseason run. (They) gave us a run for our money, that's for sure. Nothing was easy at all this whole entire weekend. A lot of respect for what they do. Tony Baldwin and his staff work really hard and I know what that feeling is like, so hats off to them," Walton began.
"I couldn't be more proud of not just these two up here, but my entire team, program and staff for working really hard and staying focused on the goal; the goal is getting to the College World Series. Now we have to re-assess our goals and get ready in a short period of time for the College World Series. Just really proud and thankful too for our crowd. Our crowd did a fantastic job, not just this weekend, but the entire season," he continued.
"Obviously, the attendance was fantastic. We decided to play three games so we could increase our revenue for postseason, so it was an awesome run for us. We sold a lot of beer and concessions and made it interesting, made everybody stay to the end, so thanks to everybody for sticking with us."
Tim Walton on Shumaker's performance
"If she would have taken the collar today, she would have been 0-fer for the series. That's never happened for her, I would imagine. But she had four walks in the first game. I don't think that frustrated her. Just the fact that she had so many opportunities to deliver (on Saturday) that she didn't, she came out today and put the work in. I wake up this morning to a text message that she was hitting already," Walton noted.
"She's a worker, not a talker. The more we can get work and more swings and watch the ball flight, the better she gets."
Rylee Holtorf on her clutch home run
"Going into the at-bat, it wasn't the best series, best weekend [for me], but we talked all year about the pitch that matters now is most important. Just being in the moment and knowing my teammates have my back. Keagan was pitching a really good game. We were getting people on base, so doing it for the Gators, together, is what we were all trying to do."
Kendra Falby on top of order capitalizing
"That's how it's been all year. Rylee has been turning the lineup all year, then with me giving it to Taylor. It was a little slow, but when we go we go – and in that inning, we went. For sure. That home run was huge and I was so glad she was able to do that today."
Next up for Florida softball
The Gators open the WCWS Thursday against sixth-seeded Texas Longhorns, who defeated the Clemson Tigers in their three-game Austin Super Regional. The game will be the first of the of the double-elimination tournament, with a start time of noon ET on ESPN.
The Longhorns took two of three from the Gators in their regular-season Southeastern Conference series at Gainesville, with UT winning the first two games 7-2 and 13-7, and UF winning the third 3-1.

LA Galaxy Vs Inter Miami Preview- Expected Starting Lineups, Injuries, Team News, H2H Stats & Predictions
LA Galaxy Vs Inter Miami Preview- Expected Starting Lineups, Injuries, Team News, H2H Stats & Predictions originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Inter Miami will host the LA Galaxy at Chase Stadium on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at 7:30 p.m. ET/ 4:30 p.m. PT. The season is moving forward on and both come into this one from very different places in the table. Inter Miami is 6th in the Eastern Conference with a record of 12–5–6 (points 42) and Galaxy is at the bottom of the Western Conference with a record of 3–15–7 heading into the weekend. Team News and Injury Updates For Miami, the big news is Lionel Messi's return. Coach Javier Mascherano said Messi has recovered from his right leg's minor muscular injury in the Leagues Cup and has been training with his teammates this week. So the Argentine star should be available but the staff might not start him right away. Miami has no other injuries so they have a full squad to face the Galaxy. Meanwhile, LA Galaxy is still dealing with injuries and that's complicating their season. Midfielder Riqui Puig is out with a knee issue, and defender Maya Yoshida is questionable. But midfielders Marco Reus, Edwin Cerrillo and Diego Fagundez will carry the creative load and try to stabilize the middle of the park. Related: Predicted Lineups Inter Miami will likely line up in a 4–2–3–1 with some flexibility depending on Messi's involvement: Oscar Ustari, Noah Allen, Franco Falcón, Jordi Alba, Franco Fray, Sergio Busquets, Rodrigo De Paul, Facundo Allende, Brian Segovia, Messi, Luis Suárez. LA Galaxy will likely line up in a 4–2–3–1 as well: Jonathan Mićović, Julian Aude, Maya Yoshida, Zanka, Seiji Yamane, Cerrillo, Fagundez, Reus, Gabriel Pec, Micael Nascimento and Ernest Paintsil. Head-to-Head As of today, Inter Miami has played the LA Galaxy twice, with Galaxy being unbeaten with one win and one draw in this two-game series. This should give the two teams even more motivation with Miami looking to win at home and the Galaxy aiming to remain unbeaten against Miami. Match Preview Inter Miami comes into the game with 12 wins, 5 losses and 6 draws and 6th in the Eastern Conference with 42 points. They also get a boost with the return of Messi who is leading the MLS Golden Boot with 18 goals and 10 assists in 17 games this season. He will be key to the game especially with Busquets, De Paul and Suárez. On the other hand, the Galaxy are at the bottom of the Western Conference with 3 wins, 15 losses and 7 draws heading into the weekend. Despite their poor season they still have talented players that can turn the game around. Reus and Fagundez will be important in linking defense to attack. This will be a test for LA and Miami looks to capitalize on home advantage and Messi. Predictions Given the form and squad depth Inter Miami are favorites to win especially if Messi starts, who can break down defenses. So, Miami has a 66% chance to win and most analysts predict a 3–1 wi. But LA Galaxy shouldn't be overlooked. Though they sit at the bottom of the Western Conference, they are showing Head Coach Javier Mascherano said the team has played better on the pitch than their position in the league would suggest, and he's expecting a competitive, hard-fought match. Kirby Smart refuses to name Georgia's starting quarterback
Georgia Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart does not sound like he'll be naming Georgia's starting quarterback ahead of the season opener. Smart was asked if he would name redshirt junior quarterback Gunner Stockton as Georgia's starter. "Yes, so y'all can write about it (naming Stockton the starter)?" Smart said. "Nah." Smart's decision to refrain from naming Stockton as the starter should not come as a surprise. Smart likes as much competition as possible to bring out the best in his players. He tries to keep his press conferences out of the spotlight most of the time and this was no exception. Smart's decision to not name a starting quarterback differs from the approach several other college football coaches are using. Tennessee, Alabama, Notre Dame and Ohio State all recently named their respective starting quarterbacks. Georgia does not appear to have too much to gain from not naming a starter. The Bulldogs open the season against the Marshall Thundering Herd and then play Austin Peay the following week. When Georgia plays Tennessee in Week 3, every coach in college football will already know Georgia's starting quarterback. Perhaps the additional competition could help Gunner Stockton continue to take his game to the next level, but we'll find out soon enough on Georgia's Aug. 30 season opener. Kirby Smart explains what he expects out of Stockton "Good decisions, good decisions," Smart said. "Make good decisions, continue to develop, understanding situational football. "We've made football so complicated, some quarterbacks, I don't think they know the down and distance. I don't think they actually know, 'Do I have another down after this play, or is this my last chance to get the first down?' "It's just little things. Being a quarterback, understanding the game, understanding what the defense is doing. He's grown so much in regards to that. ID (identification) in protections, ID in run game. Playing quarterback is like being a computer. It's got a million things going on at once, and he's gotten better and better at handling those things. That's what I want to see him do when he gets the opportunity." College football quarterbacks have a lot put on their plate, but Gunner Stockton has been preparing to start for a long time. His preparation and experience are big reasons why he'll be Georgia's starting quarterback in Week 1 if Kirby Smart names him the starter or not.
