Kirby Smart refuses to name Georgia's starting quarterback

USA Todaya day ago
Georgia Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart does not sound like he'll be naming Georgia's starting quarterback ahead of the season opener. Smart was asked if he would name redshirt junior quarterback Gunner Stockton as Georgia's starter.
"Yes, so y'all can write about it (naming Stockton the starter)?" Smart said. "Nah."
Smart's decision to refrain from naming Stockton as the starter should not come as a surprise. Smart likes as much competition as possible to bring out the best in his players. He tries to keep his press conferences out of the spotlight most of the time and this was no exception.
Smart's decision to not name a starting quarterback differs from the approach several other college football coaches are using. Tennessee, Alabama, Notre Dame and Ohio State all recently named their respective starting quarterbacks.
Georgia does not appear to have too much to gain from not naming a starter. The Bulldogs open the season against the Marshall Thundering Herd and then play Austin Peay the following week. When Georgia plays Tennessee in Week 3, every coach in college football will already know Georgia's starting quarterback. Perhaps the additional competition could help Gunner Stockton continue to take his game to the next level, but we'll find out soon enough on Georgia's Aug. 30 season opener.
Kirby Smart explains what he expects out of Stockton
"Good decisions, good decisions," Smart said. "Make good decisions, continue to develop, understanding situational football.
"We've made football so complicated, some quarterbacks, I don't think they know the down and distance. I don't think they actually know, 'Do I have another down after this play, or is this my last chance to get the first down?'
"It's just little things. Being a quarterback, understanding the game, understanding what the defense is doing. He's grown so much in regards to that. ID (identification) in protections, ID in run game. Playing quarterback is like being a computer. It's got a million things going on at once, and he's gotten better and better at handling those things. That's what I want to see him do when he gets the opportunity."
College football quarterbacks have a lot put on their plate, but Gunner Stockton has been preparing to start for a long time. His preparation and experience are big reasons why he'll be Georgia's starting quarterback in Week 1 if Kirby Smart names him the starter or not.

Rookie Titans QB Cam Ward addresses practice scuffle with Pro Bowl defender Jeffery Simmons: 'It was fun'

Cam Ward and Jefferey Simmons got into it at Tennessee Titans practice on Monday. On Wednesday, Ward addressed the scuffle with reporters. To the Titans quarterback, it was no big deal. In fact, Ward said, it was fun. Here's what he had to say on Wednesday when asked if he'd learned anything from the scuffle: "Did I learn anything from it? Jeff's strong as s***," Ward quipped. Ward went on to say that the scuffle was good for the team and indicated that there's no ill will between him and Simmons. "It was fun. At the same time, I think it was what we needed, though," Ward continued. "We love competing, especially with me and Jeff. I'm excited to have that man as my teammate. "I can't wait to see what he do on Sundays. I already know what he's about. But I can see the real thing coming soon." [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Simmons didn't address the dustup with media. But unless he's got a different version than Ward, things appear to be just fine between Tennessee's No. 1 pick rookie quarterback and its three-time Pro Bowl defensive captain. What happened There's no published video of the scuffle. But multiple reporters were on the scene and provided an account of the dustup that took place during a red-zone drill. According to A to Z Sports' Easton Freeze, Ward threw a touchdown pass to wide receiver Calvin Ridley. After the pass, Ward shoved Simmons in the back. Ward then hit him with his signature "Zombieland" celebration that he made famous as a Heisman Trophy finalist at Miami. Per ESPN, Simmons responded with a two-hand shove to Ward's facemask, prompting Ward's offensive teammates to come to his defense. Simmons lost his helmet during the fracas and left the field when it was subdued. He did not return to the drill, which was over after two more plays, per the report. Cornerback Jarvis Brownlee was on the field and offered his perspective of the scuffle on Monday. Like Ward, Brownlee chalked the incident up as a positive while praising Ward's and Simmons' competitive fire. "I feel like it's a great thing," Brownlee said. "When you've got great teams, brothers fight. At the end of the day, as long as we all have got each other's back, we all connected. "We all got that bond. We all got that same connection where we're gonna fight for one another, that's the most important thing at the end of the day." Ward and Simmons, meanwhile, already have an established off-field relationship. Simmons has taken Ward fishing and posted a photo of the two on a boat in July. So all does appear to be fine among Tennessee's offensive and defensive leaders. The next step will be translating their practice intensity to a tough Week 1 matchup on the road against the Denver Broncos on Sept. 7.

Jake Paul to face lightweight boxing champion Gervonta Davis on Nov. 14

Jake Paul will face Gervonta "Tank" Davis in a boxing match on Nov. 14 at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Netflix announced Wednesday. The bout is expected to be the biggest test to date for Paul, a social media star with 28 million followers on Instagram and 21 million followers on YouTube. Paul (12-1) became a professional boxer in January 2020 and has impressed despite limited experience in the ring. He has faced criticism for his competition, however. Most of his opponents have been nonboxers — a former NBA Slam Dunk champion in Nate Robinson, and MMA fighters like Anderson Silva, Tyron Woodley, Ben Askren and Mike Perry. He beat a 59-year-old Mike Tyson, and his lone loss came to boxer Tommy Fury, the half-brother of former heavyweight champion Tyson Fury. Paul, 28, is coming off a unanimous decision against former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in June. Davis is without question Paul's most heralded opponent. The 30-year-old WBA lightweight champion is one of the sport's top talents, amassing a 30-0-1 record. Though he stands just 5-foot-5, Davis is known for his vicious punching power and has 28 knockouts in his career. He most recently retained his belt with a majority decision draw against Lamond Roach Jr. in March. Davis' boxing career was in jeopardy after he was arrested on July 11 in an alleged domestic dispute with his ex-girlfriend. According to the Miami-Dade County Clerk's Office, a misdemeanor battery charge against Davis was dropped. Paul vs. Davis is the latest boxing match promoted by Netflix as it gets more involved in live sports. Paul's bout with Tyson last November, for example, peaked at 65 million streams, according to the streaming service. Netflix is also promoting Terence Crawford vs. Canelo Alvarez on Sept. 13, and has WWE Raw and multiple NFL games on Christmas Day. Not everyone in the boxing world is happy Paul vs. Davis is happening. Ryan Garcia, a former WBC interim lightweight champion who lost to Davis in 2023, wrote on social media that "boxing is officially the WWE … integrity of the sport is getting ruined every day."
