
RM6 billion allocated for Kuching Urban Transportation System
KUCHING: The state government has allocated RM6 billion for the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS), said state Transport Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin today.
He said of the amount, the capital expenditure has reached RM1.03 billion, underscoring the Sarawak government's strong financial commitment to this transformative project.
"As of April 2025, the overall actual progress for KUTS Phase 1 stands at 29.89 per cent, against 33.86 per cent, which includes design and engineering works, system works, procurement, land acquisition and construction activities," Lee said in his winding up speech at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly.
"As of today, a total of six infrastructure package contracts have been awarded under the project," he said, adding that out of these, two packages have been successfully completed — the advanced ground foundation works for the Rembus Depot and the construction of a three-kilometre stretch essential for the proof of concept (POC) trial run in Samarahan.
He added that the remaining four packages were currently in progress, including the Blue Line Package 1, Blue Line Package 2, and the Red Line Package.
He said the infrastructure package for Green Line is presently in the preparatory stage for tender.
Lee said the state government was emphasising on green agenda in the transformation of the public transport system through initiatives such as development of KUTS, which will be powered by clean hydrogen energy.
He said the initiatives reflect Sarawak's commitment to the National Green Investment Strategies and the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR).
On the proposed development of the new Kuching International Airport (KIA) at Tanjung Embang in Kuching district, Lee said his ministry has recently appointed an international consultant in joint venture with a local consultant to undertake the site verification and feasibility study, marking a significant milestone in the early planning phase.
He added the next phase, under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), will involve the formulation of a comprehensive aerotropolis master plan and detailed design of the new airport, covering all critical components such as terminal capacity, runway systems, airside and landside facilities, multimodal connectivity and scalability to meet future passenger and cargo demands.
"This will prepare us for the subsequent construction phase of the new airport," he said.
Lee said he was unable to provide the total cost of the new airport at this moment as the site verification and feasibility studies have yet to be completed before; thus any realistic cost estimation cannot be made.
He said the construction of the new Kuching International Airport is a commitment to build critical infrastructure that supports economic transformation and positions Sarawak as a leading regional hub in the Borneo region.

AirAsia's digital platform ordered to halt airline ticket sales in Manila
KUALA LUMPUR: The Philippines has ordered AirAsia's digital platform, AirAsia Move, to cease all airline ticket sales in the country following complaints that it was charging illegally high fares. reported that the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) issued a cease-and-desist order against the platform, with Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon announcing on Sunday that police had been instructed to take down its website. The move came after reports surfaced of exorbitant ticket prices during recent transport disruptions in Tacloban City. According to the Philippines' Transportation Department, a one-way ticket from Manila to Tacloban listed on AirAsia Move costs as much as 77,000 pesos (about RM6,300), nearly three times the price offered by Philippine Airlines for the same route. "The government will not tolerate these abusive practices. We will use the full force of the law against unscrupulous online platforms exploiting the public," Dizon was quoted as saying in a press conference. He said the authorities were preparing to file a case of criminal economic sabotage against the platform, which is owned by Capital A Berhad and affiliated with budget airline Philippines AirAsia. Wave of anger could sweep liberals to victory in South Korea election
WHEN then-President Yoon Suk Yeol's martial law decree plunged South Korea into chaos, it plummeted sales at Park Myung-Ja's diner in Jechon and became a turning point for many voters in the town. The 66-year-old chef and restaurant owner is one face of South Korea's North Chungcheong Province, a swing region that has become even more pivotal at a time of deep political polarisation in Asia's fourth-largest economy. "We need to get furthest away from all that martial law drama to get things back to where they were," Park said at her Korean restaurant two hours south of Seoul, adding liberal candidate "Lee Jae-myung looks alright for that." Voters are now looking for the winner of the June 3 snap election to calm the economic and political shocks that have roiled the country since Yoon's December 3 martial law decree led to months of economic downturn and sparked nationwide protests. Park's Chungcheong Province is a key battleground for Kim Moon-soo, candidate for the conservative People Power Party campaigning on deregulations for companies, and liberal Democratic Party frontrunner Lee, who's vowing to bring back stability after months of turmoil. In swing regions such as North Chungcheong Province, where Jechon is located, the ruling conservative party risks losing a big chunk of its vote base with many voters blaming the martial law debacle for weaker private consumption and easing export momentum. Consumer sentiment, which dropped by the most since the outbreak of Covid-19 in December, recovered to pre-martial-law levels of 101.8 in May, on expectations of a fresh stimulus package under a new leader. The shock move rattled markets and put the won among the region's worst-performing currencies of the last year, hurt business sentiment even before exporters absorbed the full force of US President Donald Trump's punitive tariff policies. Now, the strains are setting in, as economic tailwinds from the semiconductor boom and reforms in the capital markets in the past few years are fading. Whoever wins the June 3 election will face an economy that contracted in the first quarter, manage negotiations with Washington to avoid high tariffs, and assuage voters such as Park who are seeing their living standards go backwards from elevated grocery bills and weak spending. South Korea's election campaign has been light on policy and heavy on spectacle after twists and turns involving the main candidates. "I wish they had taken housing supply and boosting the domestic market more seriously in their pledges," said 59-year-old Jung Soo-hyeon. "But perhaps because it's a snap election, that kind of in-depth consideration seems to be missing — which is a bit disappointing." Analysts say voters watched economic pledges closely as consumption has been badly hit. A win for Lee could spur "faster economic growth in the short term," Kim Jin-wook of Citi Research said. The Democratic Party "would likely be relatively more keen on providing policy and support for the mid-to-low-income bracket," he added. While both top candidates have pledged to draft a second supplementary budget for the year as soon as the election is over, Lee has also promised vouchers to help local businesses and subsidies for childcare, youth, and the elderly. While Lee has backed away from advocating for universal basic income, some voters including Park, who backed Yoon last time, said they see Lee as most likely to look out for their interests. "Lee's party seems to be willing to give out more to those who are struggling," Park said, emphasising that "change" is important.
