Karnataka CM slams BJP's 'Urdu over Kannada' claim as malicious lie
In a series of tweets, Siddaramaiah accused the BJP of Karnataka of deliberately spreading falsehoods that undermine communal harmony.
"BJP4Karnataka is spreading a malicious lie that our Govt gave more funds to Urdu while neglecting Kannada. This is not just false -- it's a deliberate attempt to incite communal hatred. A national party behaving like internet trolls is deeply shameful," he wrote on X.
The Chief Minister presented detailed figures to counter the BJP's assertions. According to Siddaramaiah, the state government allocated Rs34,438 crore to Primary and Secondary Education and an additional Rs 4,150 crore to Social Welfare and other departments during 20205-26, for a total of Rs 38,688 crore--all meant for Kannada-medium education. Furthermore, Rs 999.3 crore has been set aside for government school infrastructure, benefiting Kannada-based education.
Chief Minister condemned the BJP for equating language with religion, calling it "an insult to that language." The Congress leader highlighted the Karnataka government's efforts to support all native tongues.
"Equating any language with a particular religion is an insult to that language. Our Govt honours all native tongues of Karnataka -- Tulu, Kodava, Konkani, Arebhashe, Byari -- with dedicated academies and an annual grant of Rs 80 lakh each, along with extra funds for cultural programs," the post added on X.
Regarding Kannada, Siddaramaiah outlined the role of the Kannada and Culture Department, which oversees 14 academies, 3 authorities, and 24 literary trusts, all focused on promoting Kannada language and culture, benefiting Kannadigas and the state.
Siddaramaiah also took a direct swipe at the BJP's national leadership, suggesting that the misinformation might be part of a "fake news toolkit" allegedly handed down by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He urged the PM to take action by directing the Press Information Bureau's Fact Check unit to expose the misinformation and called on the Union Home Ministry to act against BJP Karnataka's social media handles, which he referred to as "repeat offenders."

The Congress on Wednesday said Rahul Gandhi's lawyer raised the issue of threat to his life without his consent and will take back the statement in court on Thursday. Rahul Gandhi's lawyer said that he will "file a formal application tomorrow for withdrawal of the said Pursis" before the Pune court. (PTI File) An application, filed before Judicial Magistrate (First Class) Amol Shinde in Pune by Gandhi's lawyer Milind Pawar, said that Gandhi could face harm from the followers of the ideology of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar and Nathuram Godse, and providing "preventive protection" is the state's constitutional obligation. Congress' media and publicity department head Pawan Khera said Gandhi's lawyer raised the issue of threat to his life in the court without his consent. "Mr Gandhi has strong objection to this and tomorrow his lawyer will take back this statement in court," Khera said in a post on X. He also shared a press release by the lawyer which said "the Pursis dated 13.08.2025 was filed by me in the Court without Instructions from the client". "The contents of the Pursis were drafted by me without consulting my client Shri. Rahul Gandhi. My client has taken strong exception to filing of this Pursis dated 13.08.2025 and has expressed his disagreement with the contents of the Pursis," Pawar said. "I shall file a formal application tomorrow for withdrawal of the said Pursis before the Hon'ble Court," he said. The case, the trial of which is yet to start, pertains to certain comments allegedly made by Gandhi against V D Savarkar, freedom fighter and Hindutva ideologue. The application said that complainant Satyaki Savarkar had admitted that he is also a direct descendant, through maternal lineage, of Nathuram Godse and Gopal Godse, principal accused in the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi is the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and recently held a press conference in New Delhi, placing before the nation evidence of "electoral fraud" by the Election Commission, the application said. Gandhi also staged a protest in the Parliament complex, raising slogans such as "vote chor sarkar". "In light of the documented history of violent and anti-constitutional tendencies linked to the complainant's lineage, and considering the prevailing political climate, there exists a clear, reasonable, and substantial apprehension that Rahul Gandhi may face harm, wrongful implication, or other forms of targeting by persons subscribing to the ideology of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar," the application stated. "In such circumstances, preventive protection is not only prudent but is a constitutional obligation upon the state," it added. Advocate Pawar had said earlier this 'Pursis' or application was submitted as a precautionary measure with the objective of "legally safeguarding the fairness, integrity, and transparency of the present proceedings".

Rahul to lead 16-day ‘Vote Adhikar Yatra' in Bihar as Congress intensifies fight against SIR
Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, is all set to start a 16-day-long 'Vote Adhikar Yatra' from Sasaram in Bihar on Sunday (August 17, 2025), as the principal Opposition party steps up its campaign against alleged irregularities in the special intensive revision of electoral rolls in the State. On Wednesday (August 13, 2025), Mr. Gandhi put out a video on his X handle in which he is seen interacting with a group of voters, who have been declared dead in the SIR exercise, concluded recently. 'There have been many interesting experiences in life, but I never got the chance to have tea with 'dead people'. For this unique experience, thank you, Election Commission!' Mr. Gandhi said. Taking the fight to ground zero, Congress general secretary (organisation) K.C. Venugopal met the INDIA bloc leaders in Sasaram to assess the preparation for the yatra to be led by Mr. Gandhi. 'The fight to protect our democracy will take place on the streets! Starting August 17th, LOP Sh Rahul Gandhi ji and the INDIA parties will embark on a massive Vote Adhikar Yatra across Bihar — against the dangerous SIR exercise, and to make the battle against Vote Chori a mass movement!' Commerce ministry readies export incentives, credit aid to blunt Trump tariffs
New Delhi: The government will soon announce an economic package to help Indian exporters remain competitive in the overseas markets at a time of severe international trade disruptions caused by US president Donald Trump's tariff tirade. According to a top government official, the commerce ministry has finalized the proposal and sent it to the finance ministry for consideration. The package is designed to give exporters a combination of incentives, policy support and targeted interventions to help them overcome the volatility in global trade. 'We have sent the proposal to the finance ministry, and it is now awaiting clearance from the Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC) before being placed before the Union cabinet for approval,' the official said on the sidelines of the inauguration of the new building of Intellectual Property Office on Wednesday. The package has been designed to address both immediate operational challenges faced by exporters and medium-term policy hurdles, with a particular emphasis on high-potential sectors that can yield quick gains in overseas shipments, the official added, requesting not to be identified. Mint reported on 8 August that India is preparing to counter stiff US tariffs by pivoting to new markets and offering incentives for exporters, even as prime minister Narendra Modi has vowed to protect the interests of the country's farmers and fishermen. Trump has imposed an additional 25% tariff to punish India for buying Russian oil and weapons, doubling the duty on New Delhi's shipments to Washington to 50% Alongside efforts to secure fresh trading destinations, the government's proposed financial package under the Export Promotion Mission is expected to include raising the duty drawback rate from 1% to as high as 5% to help exporters offset the additional tax burden, and reintroducing the interest equalization scheme (IES), which offers exporters a subsidy on interest rates to lower borrowing costs. These initiatives would be funded through a new ₹ 20,000 crore corpus. Duty drawback refers to the refund of duties collected upon import of goods. Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the Export Promotion Mission in the FY26 budget to facilitate easy access to export credit, and help small businesses overcome non-tariff measures in foreign markets, among others. The measures are aimed at cushioning the economy against the potential fallout of the US tariff hike, which some economists warn could trim India's growth by 20 to 30 basis points, bringing it down to around 6.2% in the current fiscal year. The move is being initiated to mitigate the impact of the US tariffs. However, the government is continuing to pursue dialogue to resolve the matter, and no retaliatory measures are currently being considered. Meanwhile, while inaugurating the new building of the Intellectual Property Office, Union minister for commerce and industry Piyush Goyal said that provisions related to intellectual property laws in the country have been simplified to further improve ease of doing business. Keeping in mind the goal of a developed India, suggestions have been invited from all stakeholders to make the IP ecosystem more effective in order to further strengthen the Atmanirbhar Bharat campaign, Goyal added. 'The government will take similar steps for laws related to IPR (intellectual property rights), trademarks, and copyrights, in line with the approach taken under the Jan Vishwas Bill to decriminalize business laws. Suggestions will be sought from stakeholders for this process, and if necessary, a completely new legislation may be introduced,' Goyal said. The US tariffs threaten to disrupt trade flows between the two countries, which totalled $86.5 billion in Indian goods exported to the US in the last fiscal year. Sectors like textiles, engineering goods, marine products and gems and jewellery are particularly vulnerable and could see exports fall by as much as 40% if the tariffs persist, according to analysts.
