Domestic dip is at the heart of hotels' soft Q2 numbers
Hilton and Wyndham Hotels & Resorts reported declines in revenue per available room (RevPAR) for the quarter, down 0.5% and 3%, respectively. Marriott International posted 1.5% RevPAR growth, but all three were slowed by domestic performance.
Hilton reported a 1.5% RevPAR decline in the U.S. while Wyndham reported a steeper 4% drop. Marriott's RevPAR in the U.S. and Canada was flat.
Hilton said business travel showed particular weakness, with business transient RevPAR down 2%, and CEO Christopher Nassetta attributed the period's declines to "holiday and calendar shifts, reduced government spending, softer international inbound business and broader economic uncertainty." Marriott and Wyndham, meanwhile, pointed to weakness in their lower-scale chains.
Chris Nassetta
Marriott's U.S. and Canada select-service and extended-stay RevPAR declined around 1.5% year over year. CEO Anthony Capuano said results came in below expectations in those segments, primarily due to declining demand from government and smaller business customers.
Wyndham CEO Geoffrey Ballotti said during its July 24 earnings call that "higher-for-longer interest rates, persistent inflation and uncertainty around immigration and trade have created an environment of ongoing economic volatility for economy and midscale guests, who remain especially sensitive to these dynamics."
Wyndham's brand stable -- with flags like La Quinta, Microtel, Days Inn, Super 8 and Travelodge -- is weighted more heavily toward economy and midscale than the Hilton and Marriott portfolios. Truist Securities analyst Patrick Scholes said that positioning puts Wyndham in a particularly challenging environment, with the second half of 2025 expected to continue to "be a difficult RevPAR environment for U.S. midscale and economy hotels."
Meanwhile, weakness in the U.S. hotel industry overall has continued into the third quarter, according to STR data, which showed five consecutive weeks of domestic RevPAR decreases through late July, with the week ending July 26 down 0.8% year over year.
Travelers in wait-and-see mode
Richie Karaburun, clinical associate professor at NYU's Jonathan M. Tisch Center of Hospitality, called the current environment "a perfect storm" of reduced government spending, lower inbound international travel from key source markets like Canada, Mexico and parts of Europe and broader economic uncertainty.
Richie Karaburun
"Consumer behavior right now is to wait and see," Karaburun said. "People are saying we're not going to travel this year, or we're going to travel less. If we're going to actually travel, it will be for one week instead of two weeks."
This uncertainty has manifested itself in significantly shortened booking windows, a trend that has been reported in other sectors and among travel agencies. Karaburun said conversations with hoteliers indicate dramatic domestic booking compression, from between a week to 10 days to as little as three or four days.
The inbound travel slowdown particularly impacts gateway cities that have historically relied on overseas visitors. Karaburun cited New York, Boston, Washington, Las Vegas, Miami and Orlando as markets that could feel the impact most acutely.
Hotel executives still feeling pretty good
Despite the volatility, both Hilton and Wyndham executives expressed optimism about the industry's prospects.
Hilton's Nassetta painted a particularly bullish picture for the intermediate term, citing expectations of a "more favorable regulatory environment, certainty in tax reform, expected settling down on global trade policy, continuation of very healthy corporate profits and significant investments across a multitude of industries."
And while he forecasted Q3 RevPAR to be "flat to modestly down again," Hilton projects full year RevPAR to be flat to up 2%.
At Wyndham, Ballotti cited opportunities for improvement before summer's end, with more schools starting later this year than last and with the economy "still humming" and pricing "holding steady."
"Consumer spending on travel is continuing, despite the macro headlines," he said, pointing to internal research that indicated more guest optimism on travel intent and less economic concerns than "last year and even last month."
Marriott executives also highlighted bright spots in certain segments. Capuano noted continued strength in luxury, while CFO Leeny Oberg pointed to improving forward momentum in group bookings.
For the full year, Marriott expects systemwide RevPAR growth to land in the lower end of its 1.5% to 2.5% forecast range.
Karaburun, meanwhile, is "cautiously optimistic."
"We've survived the pandemic, 9/11, many recessions, 2008 -- and in the end, we're always going to survive, because hospitality is a resilient industry," he said. "There's a little bit of up and down right now, but we'll recover."

Comcast debuts soccer-focused video package ahead of World Cup
(Reuters) -Internet and media giant Comcast launched a soccer-focused video package exclusively for its Xfinity customers on Wednesday, as it looks to attract sports fans ahead of major events, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Comcast has priced the offering, called "World Soccer Ticket", at $85 a month. The bundle includes nearly 60 broadcast, cable news, and sports channels, along with a premium subscription of NBCUniversal's Peacock streaming service. As cord cutting continues to hit traditional TV revenue, live sports content has emerged as one of the few formats that still draw millions of eyeballs and boost advertising demand. The package comes ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. Every match of the quadrennial tournament will be available in English on Fox and in Spanish across Telemundo, Universo, and Peacock, Comcast said on Wednesday. The plan will also offer live coverage of major international leagues and competitions, including Premier League, UEFA Champions League, LaLiga, Liga MX and CONCACAF Champions Cup. Besides, the package will include live coverage of other major sports and leagues like the NFL and NBA on the package's networks and Peacock. Customers can access the package through X1 set-top box and Xfinity Stream TV app on supported platforms like Apple TV and Fire TV. Comcast's new offering is expected to drive demand for its networks like NBC and boost subscriber growth for its flagship streaming platform, Peacock, which had 41 million paid subscribers at the end of June, far fewer than rival platforms. Media companies are aggressively pursuing major sports deals to strengthen their streaming platforms. The newly merged Paramount secured exclusive U.S. broadcast rights to the Ultimate Fighting Championship for seven years in a $7.7 billion deal on Monday.

This Artificial Intelligence (AI) Stock Just Dropped, and That's a Buying Opportunity
Key Points The Trade Desk stock slumped after earnings, the second post-earnings drop this year. Shares of the digital ad specialist now sell at a forward price-to-earnings multiple of 30. Artificial intelligence is upgrading the user experience on The Trade Desk's platform. 10 stocks we like better than The Trade Desk › Investors tend to want to avoid stocks after they have made a significant drop. Such price action points to problems investors either did not understand previously or ignored for whatever reason. This is likely the case with The Trade Desk (NASDAQ: TTD) after announcing its earnings for the second quarter of 2025, and the price fell 39% the following trading day. In The Trade Desk's case, investors dealt with elevated expectations and valuations. They have also become increasingly aware of the effects of the "walled gardens" that limit engagement with the largest ad platforms such as Alphabet's Google and Amazon. Despite such concerns, The Trade Desk may still be a buy, and here is why investors should still consider owning this stock that is widening its competitive moat through artificial intelligence (AI). The Trade Desk's Q2 earnings For the second time this year, the stock fell after releasing an earnings report that arguably brought more positives than negatives. Its second-quarter revenue was $694 million, a 19% yearly increase and slightly ahead of analyst expectations. The company also beat analyst estimates on earnings, though the $90 million in net income rose by 6% compared to year-ago levels, primarily due to a 56% in its provision for income taxes. Still, the company's third-quarter revenue forecast of $717 million fell slightly short of expectations. It also implied a 14% yearly growth rate, increasing concerns over the company's long-term growth. The company announced the departure of its chief financial officer. When combined with the increased concerns over the "walled gardens" eating into market share and a pre-announcement price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) of 108, that could have prompted investors to rethink what had become an elevated valuation. This decline slightly surpasses its one-day drop following fourth-quarter earnings, when investors sold the stock after it missed its own revenue target for the quarter. Although The Trade Desk's stock rose after first-quarter earnings, this may undermine investor confidence. Why investors should consider buying The Trade Desk anyway Nonetheless, the sell-off has made the valuation more attractive. The trailing P/E that was 108 has now fallen to 65. Moreover, the stock sells for 31 times forward earnings. Even if revenue growth slows to 14%, that could still prompt rapid net income growth at the same time investors become more accustomed to a tax rate more fitting of a consistently profitable company. Furthermore, AI is on track to supercharge this growth. The company is in the process of switching from Solimar to Kokai. Solimar specializes in optimizing digital ad campaigns, but with the AI-driven Kokai platform, users have a more holistic approach to media buying, applying deep-learning algorithms to every aspect of the process. Thus, Kokai leverages AI for better forecasting, predictive bidding, and impression scoring. Moreover, it enables users to allocate ad budgets more effectively and curate premium ad inventory. And The Trade Desk offers a neutral platform targeting digital ad opportunities on every platform. This lack of bias helps advertisers and ad agencies place ads where they can best perform, unencumbered by biases that a Google or Amazon might have toward those platforms. Furthermore, the numbers are likely lower amid a sluggish economy. Still, that price action is probably cyclical, and the predictions for 17% revenue growth in 2025 and 18% the following year do not point to a significant slowdown. That means growth could easily accelerate, reinforcing the buy case for the stock. The Trade Desk buying opportunity Amid the considerable drop in the stock price, investors have a tremendous opportunity to buy it at a significant discount. Indeed, the sell-off is the second huge post-earnings sell-off over three quarters, and such price behavior could diminish confidence in the stock. However, thanks to the discounted price, the forward P/E of 30 makes the stock particularly attractive. Also, forecasts so far indicate that the slowing to 14% revenue growth may be temporary. Assuming a reacceleration of revenue growth occurs, investors will likely wish they had bought shares at current prices. Should you buy stock in The Trade Desk right now?
