City needs Rs100b development grant
He urged MQM-Pakistan and representatives from various parties to play their role in ensuring Karachi gets its fair share in parliament.
City Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab has said that all elected representatives remained present on the ground during Eidul Azha. He applauded the sanitary staff and everyone involved in remarkable work in extreme heat over all three days. A total of 146,801 tons of offal and garbage was transported to the three landfill sites - Jam Chakro, Gond Pass, and Sharafi Goth GTS.
He was speaking at a presser at the KMC head office where he was flanked by Deputy Mayor Salman Abdullah Murad, MD Sindh Solid Waste Management Board Tariq Nizamani, Deputy Parliamentary Leader of the City Council Dil Muhammad, and others.
He shared that 96 collection points were set up across all 25 towns and 7 districts of the city. Citizens were provided with a 24-hour helpline (1128), through which 3,699 complaints were received, out of which 97.4% were addressed. He stressed that he personally toured the city to monitor the situation and take action regardless of any criticism, stating that there is no other example in the world of such a large amount of waste being removed in just three days.
With the budget approaching, he reiterated that Karachi deserves its due share, and while everyone talks about empowering local governments, actual support for Karachi is needed. He urged MQM-Pakistan and representatives from various parties to play their role in ensuring Karachi gets its fair share in parliament. He demanded that the upcoming budget allocate Rs100billion as a development grant for Karachi, the commercial and financial hub of the country.
The mayor said he has no objection if the federal and provincial governments appoint representatives to monitor the process. He invited Jamaat-e-Islami's Karachi chapter Ameer Munim Zafar and Federal Minister Mustafa Kamal to sit together and work for the city instead of indulging in criticism. "Work is happening in Karachi, but we are too busy pulling each other down. Please stop portraying the city in a negative light; this will not serve Karachi," he urged.
Mayor Wahab said that politics of discord must end if meaningful progress is to be achieved. "This time, there was no stench - only prejudice," he said. "Previously, there was China-cutting, now there is road cutting."
He said that Karachi's water sources lay over 125 kilometres away, and all he seeks is the rightful share for Karachiites. "We have passed the ball into the federal government's court," he said, urging Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to take action. "If he does, we will hold a joint press conference." He expressed hope that Mustafa Kamal would present Karachi's case in the cabinet meeting and have it approved, and that the PPP would also support the issue in the National Assembly.
He mentioned that action was taken against the "tallow mafia" in coordination with the Karachi Police Chief, leading to 144 FIRs and the arrest of 348 individuals. "Karachi is a vast city. When something bad happens, the mayor is blamed; when something good happens, others take credit."
Many people jump into the unregulated business of making tallow from the fat of sacrificial animals. If prepared under hygienic conditions, beef tallow can be used in cooking. However, scrupulous elements make edible oil from animal fat in extremely unhygienic conditions posing health risks for the consumers.
Mayor Wahab stated that tenders have been floated for drain cleaning in all seven districts, and that funding for the work comes from the provincial government. Small-scale winching operations are needed, and the Cantonment Board used GTS facilities for their work.

PM reiterates support for CPEC's industrial component
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to advancing the industrial component of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), underscoring the country's intent to leverage China's expertise and progress in the textile sector. The group is also developing a special economic zone (SEZ) in Pakistan, with planned investments of $100 million over five years. This initiative is projected to generate exports worth $400 million. Following the meeting, Prime Minister Sharif inaugurated the Challenge Fashion Group's special economic zone. Addressing the delegation, Sharif described the China-Pakistan friendship as unique and resilient, noting that the two nations have consistently supported each other through challenges. He expressed the government's eagerness to elevate bilateral ties to new heights, particularly through enhanced economic cooperation. 'The growth in economic relations between China and Pakistan is a source of great satisfaction. We encourage Chinese industries to establish operations in Pakistan,' Sharif said. He also commended Challenge Fashion Group for its confidence in the Pakistani market. Highlighting the strategic importance of the SEZ, Sharif said it would facilitate technology transfer, skill development, and sustainable industrial growth. He directed all relevant authorities to extend full support and provide necessary facilities to the Challenge Group. Pak-US joint strike on the drug trade
US Coordinator for Counterterrorism Gregory LoGerfo meets with Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi in Islamabad. Photo: APP Pakistan and the United States on Friday agreed to make exchange of information more effective in the fields of counterterrorism and counter-narcotics in yet another sign of deepening security cooperation between the two sides. The development came during a meeting between Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and US Coordinator for Counterterrorism Gregory LoGerfo at the Ministry of Interior. Minister of State for Interior Tallal Chaudhry, Acting US Ambassador Natalie Baker and Federal Interior Secretary were also present on the occasion. An official handout issued here by the Interior Ministry said during the meeting, both sides agreed to further enhance Pakistan-US relations especially in the areas of counterterrorism, border security, and anti-narcotics. They also agreed to make the exchange of information more effective in the fields of counterterrorism and counter-narcotics. Naqvi said that since President Donald Trump's administration came into power, the Pakistan-US relations have improved significantly. He commended President Trump's sincere efforts for global peace and noted that transparency, mutual trust, and cooperation are the hallmarks of the bilateral relationship. He emphasized that this is an excellent opportunity to further strengthen bilateral relations in all areas. The interior minister added that counterterrorism dialogue will help in creating a joint strategy. He termed the US decision to designate the banned BLA and banned Majeed Brigade foreign terrorist organisations a commendable step, expressing hope that Pakistan-US cooperation will yield positive results in eliminating terrorism. Gregory LoGerfo acknowledged Pakistan's geo-strategic importance. He also expressed condolences over the loss of lives in terrorist attacks. The meeting came against the backdrop of recent a move by the US to designate BLA and Majeed Brigade as Foreign Terrorist Organisation (FTO). The move was a major diplomatic win for Pakistan. Earlier this week, Pakistan and the United States pledged to deepen counterterrorism cooperation, with a renewed focus on tackling terrorist groups including the BLA, ISIS-Khorasan and the TTP. But what was significant in the joint statement issued after the latest round of counterterrorism dialogue held in Islamabad was that it was for the first time the US agreed to work together with Pakistan to tackle groups such as the outlawed BLA. The two countries regularly hold counterterrorism dialogue but never before the joint statement made mention of terrorist groups such as the BLA.

New bill targets online obscenity
Legislation on a new bill — Prohibition of Obscenity and Vulgarity on Digital Media Bill 2025 — is expected in the next National Assembly session. Introduced by PPP MNA Dr Syeda Shahida Rehmani, the bill seeks to curb obscene content online and entails penalties ranging from Rs100,000 to Rs1 billion. The proposed bill defines "digital media" and "prohibited content" as including online and offline platforms, applications, social media, and streaming services. It will apply to all content in the form of images, audio, videos, multimedia, films, web series, animated sketches, dramas, songs, short videos, live broadcasts, or advertisements viewable via digital media. Prohibited content includes sexual conversations, extramarital relations, sexual immorality, semi-nude attire, drug use, violations of public morality, hurting religious sentiments, mocking hijab, purdah, or the family system, ridiculing religious figures, and violating the ideology of Pakistan or cultural values. Under the bill, an authority, a board, and a tribunal will be established. Violations will be investigated by the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) and prosecuted under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, 2016. The board will have eight members: two religious scholars, one woman and one man, two psychologists, one female civil society member, one media legal expert, one media professional responsible for seizing prohibited content, and a federal government representative as chairperson. The tribunal will consist of three members: a person qualified to be a high court judge, a media professional, and an IT expert, who will hear and decide cases related to digital media. The board will have the authority to ban prohibited content, make amendments, take suo motu action against obscene material, and recommend fines for violations, while the authority will act on the board's recommendations. Penalties under the bill include one-year imprisonment and a Rs500,000 fine for the first-time offense and three-year imprisonment and Rs5 million fine for the second offense. Offenses involving religion, women, children, or the family system will entail five-year imprisonment and Rs10 million fine. Digital media platforms and service providers will be required to report all uploaded content in Pakistan to the board within 15 days and, upon notice, block prohibited content within 24 hours and retain the record for three years. Rs50 million will be imposed on platforms for the first violation and Rs100 million fine for the second violation. Repeated violations will result in license cancellation and service blockage. All crimes under this act will be non-bailable and non-compoundable. The bill is expected to be approved by the NA after deliberation in the relevant standing committee. The PECA, a law enacted in 2016, was passed by lower and upper houses, aimed at addressing cybercrime and regulating electronic communication in Pakistan. It was meant to combat online offences such as hacking, data theft, and cyberbullying. Many journalists and media organisations have raised concerns regarding its implications on press freedom and freedom of expression. "The government has to learn the lessons as it was earlier used against the same party, which had passed the law in a haste," commented Mazhar Abbas, a senior member of PFUJ.
