‘Get a deodorant first': Indian-origin blogger lists ‘weird' comments made by ‘white' Canadians

Indian Express3 days ago
With increasing instances of racial slurs targeting Indians abroad, cultural discrimination has become a widely discussed topic on social media. Several Indian-origin residents living in Canada and the United States of America have shared their experiences of dealing with casual racism and stereotyping.
Shikha, a software engineer and blogger based in Canada, recently went viral after listing what she described as 'weird' and offensive comments she has received from 'white' Canadians.
In her post, Shikha noted that while Canadians are typically polite face-to-face, many don't shy away from posting cruel remarks online. 'Glad they leave these comments only on social media. Face to face they are so sweet,' she wrote, before listing the slurs: ''Get a deodorant first', 'Go back', 'We don't need you', 'Go to Tim Hortons, you will feel like home', 'You find a food bank to eat', 'You guys stink', 'Pajeets', 'Go back to your own country', 'Why move where everybody hates you', 'Crush cockroach' gifs, 'Most important is go the f*** back home', 'Deport these freeloading creatures'.'
'Should I share more? I mean, why? Also, I am dancing and happy and doing what I want on my social media—these mean faceless comments can't dishearten me,' she wrote.

However, the post received mixed reactions with several social media users disagreeing with Shikha. 'I really contradict. Real life experience has been really sweet 99% of the time. I live in BC, Langley and people are really well behaved and cultured. Why bother about 1% ? Your post sounds like an intention to get more attention and views,' a user said. 'It's good to know that these comments doesn't dishearten you. You go girl, you are doing great, this country doesn't even belong to them. So, chill and enjoy,' another user commented.
'Uhhh! Have been living in Canada from last 14 years. Never in my life heard of anything like this. Please stop spreading hatred/negativity about Canada,' a third user wrote.

Uriamghat's green revival: 10,000 bighas freed, 15,000 saplings planted

1 2 Guwahati: The state govt has embarked on a large-scale plantation drive at Uriamghat, Golaghat district, following the eviction of encroachers from 10,000 bighas of forest land. The drive, launched on Saturday, aims to restore the green cover in the Rengma Reserve Forest by planting 15,000 guava saplings, in collaboration with local villagers. Uriamghat, strategically located on the Assam-Nagaland border, is known for its fertile land, ideal for guava cultivation. The plantation drive, which will eventually include other tree species, is set to cover at least 5,000 bighas of the recently reclaimed land. Special chief secretary MK Yadava emphasized the importance of the initiative, noting the area's natural suitability for guava growth. He highlighted the need for careful planning due to the presence of wetlands in the region. The plantation effort follows an eviction drive that began on July 30, clearing approximately 4,000 unauthorized structures. The initiative, which started at Sonaribeel, aims to rejuvenate the forest ecosystem and ensure the long-term protection of the land. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Top 20 Blue Flag beaches around the World Learn More Undo The launch event was attended by key officials, including Yadava, Golaghat district commissioner Pulak Mahanta, and senior representatives from the state forest department and local law enforcement. "Op Sindoor Demonstrated India's Advanced Defence Capabilities": HAL Chief

Bengaluru: Operation Sindoor demonstrated India's advanced defence capabilities, indigenous strength and synergy of Indian defence forces by bringing together legacy and modern system operations, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) chairman DK Sunil said on Saturday. Addressing the Memorial Lecture of former Air Chief Marshal Lakshman Madhav Katre at HAL's Management Academy auditorium in Bengaluru, the HAL chief also congratulated the defence forces for the "stupendous success" of the Operation. "This capability (of defence forces) was on full display during Operation Sindoor, which demonstrated India's advanced defence capabilities, indigenous strength and synergy of Indian defence forces that brought together legacy and modern system operations. On behalf of HAL, I would like to congratulate the Indian defence forces for the stupendous success of Operation Sindoor," he said. Heading the Indian Air Force from 1984-1985, Air Chief Marshal L M Katre commanded various missions in the 1971 Indo-Pak war, and always pushed for self-reliance in defence technology. While serving as the Chairman of HAL in 1983, he was instrumental in conceptualising plans for the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas and Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) Dhruv. "Air Chief Marshal Lakshman Madhav Katre left an indelible imprint on the Indian Air Force and on Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. His commitment to operational excellence, strategic foresight, and unwavering belief in self-reliance paved the way for what we proudly call today 'Atmanirbharta' in defence," the HAL chief said. "Air Marshal Katre's life and career were marked by exemplary service and steadfast dedication. From active participation in World War 2, to commanding roles in the 1971 Indo-Pak war, his meticulous planning ensured sustained operations from forward fields under enemy fire," he added. Talking about the former IAF chief's tenure as HAL chief, DK Sunil mentioned how the projects of LCA Tejas and ALH Dhruv, which were "dreams cast into reality," helped India get away from dependency. "As Chairman of HAL, he displayed remarkable foresight. At a time when India's defence industry was still nascent, he championed indigenous designs and development, laid the foundation of a program that defines India's aerospace capability today. During his tenure, two projects were conceptualised that transformed India's aviation landscape, the Light Combat Aircraft, Tejas and the Advanced Light Helicopter, Dhruv. These were not just projects, they were dreams cast into reality, they symbolised India's ambition to break free from dependency," he said. Putting forward the operational achievements of both the aircraft and the Helicopter, the HAL chief added, "Today, the LCA Tejas proudly serves in our sky as our frontline fighter, and the ALH Dhruv serves in utility and combat roles for our armed forces. These platforms stand as testimony to Air Chief Marshal Katre's vision and faith in Indian capability." Indian Armed Forces carried out Operation Sindoor on May 7 to avenge the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam on April 22, which killed 26 people.
