'Will continue to ask': Bhagwant Mann rebuffs MEA's condemnation; says he has right to question PM's foreign tours
NEW DELHI: Punjab's chief minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday hit back at Ministry of External Affairs' (MEA) condemnation of his criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi over foreign visits.
Speaking to reporters the Punjab CM said, "Don't I have the right to ask about the country's foreign policy and what did he do there? Why does Adani's business start wherever he (PM) goes? I will continue to ask in the future as well. With 140 crore people in the country, he should engage with them and address their concerns. He says he will stop the Ukraine war (Ukraine-Russia), but he can't even resolve water issues between Punjab and Haryana.

MEA on Thursday criticised recent comments made by Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann, calling them 'irresponsible and regrettable'. Without naming him directly, the MEA made it clear that the central government does not support such statements, which it said could harm India's relations with countries in the Global South.
'We have seen some comments made by a high state authority about India's relations with friendly countries from the Global South.
These remarks are irresponsible and regrettable and do not behove the state authority,' said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.
He added, 'The Government of India disassociates itself from such unwarranted comments that undermine India's ties with friendly countries.'
The MEA's reaction came shortly after Mann made a series of sarcastic remarks targeting PM Modi's recent visits to countries like Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil and Namibia.
Speaking to the media, Mann questioned the importance of these trips and mocked the destinations, saying, 'PM has gone somewhere. I think it is Ghana. He is going to be back and he is welcome. God knows which countries he keeps visiting — 'Magnesia', 'Galveaisa', 'Tarvesia'.'
He went on to say, 'He does not stay in a country with 140 crore people. He is visiting countries where the population is 10,000 and he is getting the 'highest awards' there. Here, 10,000 people gather to watch a JCB… What has he gotten himself into!'

Opposition will derail Punjab's development if voted to power, says Arvind Kejriwal
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener and former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday said that the development trajectory of Punjab would be derailed if the opposition returns to power. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal along with Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann, cabinet minister Aman Arora and senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia at an event in Shaheed Udham Singh Wala town on Thursday. (HT) He made the statement while addressing a public gathering on the martyrdom day of freedom fighter Udham Singh and laying the foundation stone for development projects worth ₹85 crore in Shaheed Udham Singh Wala town. Accompanied by Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann, cabinet minister Aman Arora and senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia, Kejriwal criticised previous governments led by Congress and the Akali-BJP alliance for 'looting public wealth' and 'introducing drugs' into the state. He accused them of misusing power, promoting corruption and neglecting vital sectors like education and healthcare. 'The previous regimes ruined Punjab. They never cared for the youth, hospitals were in shambles and public money was mercilessly looted for personal gain,' Kejriwal said. He added that even after 75 years of Independence, the vision of India's freedom fighters remained unfulfilled due to the actions of such leaders. The event was also a tribute to Shaheed Udham Singh, the legendary freedom fighter who avenged the Jallianwala Bagh massacre by assassinating Michael O'Dwyer in 1940. Chief minister Bhagwant Mann, speaking at the event, highlighted the importance of commemorating martyrs and preserving their legacy. 'It is our solemn duty to honour heroes like Shaheed Udham Singh. He waited 21 years to avenge the massacre, and his courage laid the foundation for India's eventual independence,' Mann said. Mann emphasised that naming airports, universities and institutions after national heroes helps in keeping their sacrifices alive in public memory. He also criticised the British colonial administration for honoring collaborators with titles like 'Sir', citing the example of a family that hosted General Dyer on the very day of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. 'Every inch of this sacred land carries the legacy of our Gurus, saints and martyrs, who showed us how to resist tyranny and injustice,' the CM concluded.

Defence-heavy budget sucking us dry: Mehbooba Mufti on Trump's dead economy remark
In response to former US President Donald Trump's comments labelling India's economy as 'dead,' People's Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti has attributed the nation's economic troubles to excessive defence spending and continued hostility with Pakistan.'We are spending all our budget on defence It is sucking us dry,' Mufti stated on Wednesday. 'The money we are spending on maintaining enmity with Pakistan has weakened our country's economy. After Operation Sindoor, all we hear is what weapons we bought. When all our money is being spent on this, the economy will definitely go down.'advertisementUS President Donald Trump on Thursday unleashed an attack against New Delhi's ties with Moscow, deriding both nations as "dead economies" and brazenly declaring he "does not care" what India does with Russia. "I don't care what India does with Russia. They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care," Trump wrote on Truth Social, just hours after slapping India with sweeping trade penalties. Mehbooba Mufti also criticised the lack of transparency in the country's military engagements, referring to Operation Sindoor. 'During Operation Sindoor, our chief of defence staff himself said that we were fighting both Pakistan and China. But no one mentioned China's name in the Parliament.'Mufti accused the central government of conflating domestic political goals with foreign policy. 'Our leadership must realise that our domestic policy can not be our foreign policy. They have made their domestic policy of pleasing people for votes, their foreign policy,' she PDP leader linked this approach to international criticism. 'That's why Trump, whom we respected so much, has attacked our country the most,' she added.- EndsInputs from ANI

When asked about the reason for the denial, he said, "The ministry would know better. With only a few days left, there is no time to pursue the matter. There will be another such opportunity in the future." AAP Punjab spokesperson Neel Garg questioned, "Why is the Modi govt afraid of AAP leaders from Punjab going abroad? Four AAP leaders have been denied political clearance so far. Minister Harbhajan Singh was to represent Punjab's governance model at the NCSL conference in Boston.
