Billionaire gaming CEO buys superyacht company that built his and Jeff Bezos' boats
The amount that Newell, who Forbes reports is worth $9.5 billion, paid for the shipbuilder has not been disclosed. The previous owner, Mohammed Al Barwani, purchased Oceanco in 2010.
Neither Newell nor Oceanco responded to requests for comment from Business Insider.
Newell's Valve is behind some of the most beloved video games, including the "Half-Life" and "Portal" series. It also created Steam, the biggest PC gaming platform, and the handheld PC gaming device Steam Deck.
With Oceanco, he's moving into sun decks and main decks.
The shipyard has built some of the most renowned superyachts and only delivers a couple of fully customized vessels, which cost well into the nine figures, each year.
Its largest build to date is Koru, Jeff Bezos's 127-meter-long sailing yacht, which was delivered in 2023 to much fanfare and has been praised for its aesthetics.
The Koru build had its controversial moments. Oceanco initially requested that a historic bridge be dismantled to deliver the yacht, but then rescinded the request. Separately, the company was fined for failing to properly trace the teak used to craft some of Koru's furniture and interiors.
Oceanco is also behind Alfa Nero, the 82-meter yacht seized from a Russian oligarch in 2023, and Bravo Eugenia, the 109-meter yacht owned by billionaire Jerry Jones.
Newell owns at least one Oceanco design: Draak, a 91.5-meter-long yacht with a helipad, spa, gym, and swimming pool. He is also rumored to be the future owner of Oceanco Y722, a 111-meter project expected to be delivered later this year.
While the prices of Oceanco's new deliveries are largely kept under wraps, the six yachts for sale from the builder range in price from $5.8 million for a 49-meter vessel built in 1995 to $341 million for a 105-meter superyacht built in 2000.
Newell will take a hands-off approach and plans to "leave the team alone,"according to a press release from August 1 announcing the acquisition. There is hope, however, that his tech background will influence production.

Howard Stern returns from vacation to host surprise SiriusXM show amid cancellation rumors
Metallica's Lars Ulrich joined the longtime radio host. Howard Stern is very much still on the air. A day after a report claimed that his long-running The Howard Stern Show would be cancelled when his contract with SiriusXM ends later this year, he popped up to do an unscheduled show when a repeat would have aired. The timing appeared to be pure coincidence for Stern, who had been on his summer break since June and was expected to resume hosting new episodes of his show next month. He was joined on air by Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich. The two shared their appreciation for late Black Sabbath rocker Ozzy Osbourne and discussed last month's Back to the Beginning tribute show, which had been billed as the "Crazy Train" singer's final performance. Ulrich had performed at the show. Stern said that he was "profoundly sad" about Osbourne's death. Stern's return to the airwaves seemed unrelated to a story in The U.S. Sun published Tuesday that credited unnamed insiders with saying that Stern won't remain at the entertainment company. "Stern's contract is up in the fall, and while Sirius is planning to make him an offer, they don't intend for him to take it," a source told the outlet. "Sirius and Stern are never going to meet on the money he is going to want. It's no longer worth the investment."The 71-year-old signed a five-year contract for $500 million in 2020, according to Forbes. Stern's show, which features buzzy, in-depth interviews with celebrities, has been broadcast by satellite provider SiriusXM since 2006. Before that, it aired on traditional radio stations for decades. Ulrich and Stern also announced SiriusXM's new Maximum Metallica channel (42), set to debut Aug. 29. To celebrate the new channel, the satellite broadcaster and streaming company will host a live performance by Metallica at Stephen Talkhouse in Amagansett, N.Y., on Thursday, August 28. The concert will premiere on the channel on Monday, September 1, at noon ET. SiriusXM subscribers and fans can enter for a chance to attend the exclusive concert event. EW has reached out to both Stern and SiriusXM. Read the original article on Entertainment Weekly

Despite Long Queues, Battlefield 6's Open Beta Playercount Is Skyrocketing
Today, the Battlefield 6 Open Beta has gone live after several weeks of previews that stunned many onlookers and made them believe that this may in fact be an all-timer for the series. Now, players are getting their hands on the game for themselves. To say that there's significant interest in the Battlefield 6 beta is an understatement. As I write this, the Open Beta is hitting new highs, and passed 300,000 concurrent players a few hours ago on Steam. It's in fourth place, only behind the never-ending staples of CS2, Dota 2 and PUBG. It's already climbed to 323,000 and continues to go higher every few minutes. Battlefield 6 is already the 7th most-played game on PlayStation despite release just a few hours ago. In the US, it is 8:45 AM EDT on a Thursday… The question here is if Battlefield 6 can put an actual dent in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 this fall, its eternal rival that it has not competed with in any truly significant capacity. There was a story going around from Tom Henderson the last few days that Activision leadership is not concerned with Battlefield 6 and believes Call of Duty is 'too big to fail.' But they are also 'keeping a close eye on Battlefield.' Is Activision right? Maybe. Call of Duty essentially never loses its throne of the best-selling game of the year any time there isn't a Grand Theft Auto out, albeit one recent exception was Hogwarts Legacy. But pride comes before the fall, and Call of Duty players have had it with certain aspects of the game, from stale gameplay to cheaters to goofy Fortnite-ish skins that keep being added to its cash shop. FEATURED | Frase ByForbes™ Unscramble The Anagram To Reveal The Phrase Pinpoint By Linkedin Guess The Category Queens By Linkedin Crown Each Region Crossclimb By Linkedin Unlock A Trivia Ladder So far, outside of long waits and some technical issues, the response to actual Battlefield 6 gameplay seems to be largely positive. Those who aren't in the beta are at least watching it. Battlefield 6 currently has 755,000 viewers on Twitch alone, more than triple the next closest game, League of Legends, and almost eight times as many as Fortnite, which just launched an entirely new season today. It is hard to imagine that Battlefield 6 is going to be anything less than an unequivocal success when it's released later this fall. The bar does not need to be beating Call of Duty to be considered a major hit, albeit I'm sure that's a milestone DICE and EA would die to hit. We'll see if it's remotely possible.
