2 Friends Turn Rented Flat Into Drug Lab, Make Rs 15 Crore In 2 Months
NCB's Neeraj Gupta said the setup was highly organised and both accused used their scientific knowledge to manufacture dangerous synthetic drugs like mephedrone
In a sensational bust, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has uncovered an illegal drug manufacturing racket being run from a flat in Rajasthan's Sri Ganganagar. Shockingly, the two accused—now under arrest—are schoolteachers by profession. One is a 35-year-old chemistry teacher at a private school, while the other, aged 25, teaches science at a government school.
The duo rented the flat for Rs 10,000 per month in Dream Homes Apartments in Riddi Siddhi Enclave two months ago and transformed it into a secret lab for drug production. On the morning of July 8, the NCB team raided the flat and seized approximately 780 grams of mephedrone (MD) drugs. In addition, several chemicals used in drug manufacturing were recovered, including acetone, benzene, sodium hydrogen carbonate, bromine, methylamine, isopropyl alcohol, 4-methyl propiophenone, and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone. The police also confiscated lab equipment utilised for drug production.
Mephedrone, commonly known as MD, is a synthetic stimulant drug that belongs to the cathinone family and has been gaining popularity among the youth. The rising demand for the drug motivated them to enter the illegal business. They locked themselves in the flat all day after their school hours to prepare the drugs and started supplying them locally.
The raid has left the local community in shock. Residents had no inkling that their neighbours were involved in such activities. The arrest has left people stunned, including those living next to the flat, who reported that the individuals were not very communicative.

Majority of ‘digital arrest' victims in Chandigarh are women
A recent trend in the rising cases of 'digital arrest' cyber frauds in Chandigarh shows that majority of the victims are women. According to police data, 13 digital arrest cases have been registered in the city so far in 2025, of which nine involved women victims while remaining cases involved men, most of them senior citizens over the age of 60. Cyber police sensitising elderly residents during a door-to-door awareness drive on digital arrest frauds in Chandigarh on Thursday. (HT Photo) The fraudsters, posing as law enforcement officials or government representatives, exploit fear and social stigma to trap their targets. According to Chandigarh police, the modus operandi involves callers impersonating officers from the CBI, NCB, or cyber cell, claiming that the victim's bank account or Aadhaar has been linked to a crime. In many cases, victims are coerced into staying on video calls for hours, termed as a 'digital arrest', and eventually forced to transfer large sums of money to 'secure' accounts. Women disproportionately targeted Police point out that women are particularly vulnerable due to the fear of reputational harm and the stigma attached to being linked to criminal investigations. 'Fraudsters know that fear works differently with women. They use intimidation tactics, claiming that their names will appear in public FIRs or media if they do not cooperate. This fear often overrides rational decision-making,' said DSP Cyber, Venkatesh. In one recent case, a 72 year-old woman in Chandigarh was duped of ₹11 lakh after she was told her Aadhaar was used for drug trafficking. She was kept on a 16-hour video call, during which she was repeatedly threatened with arrest and defamation. Divya Bansal, professor and head of cyber security and research at PEC said, 'Women are often more vulnerable to cybercrimes and financial frauds, including 'digital arrest' scams, due to a mix of socio-behavioural and structural factors. In many socio-cultural settings, women may exhibit higher trust in perceived authority figures and a stronger inclination to comply with official-sounding instructions. Fraudsters exploit this by using fear-based and urgent narratives to trigger quick, uncritical responses using psychological manipulation. Women engaged in online financial transactions or remote work may also share personal details more frequently, increasing exposure to data harvesting.' Bansal added, 'Limited participation in targeted cyber safety training further reduces awareness of evolving fraud tactics. Social conditioning also discourages challenging authority or engaging in confrontations can also make women less likely to question suspicious demands. These factors combine to make women particularly susceptible to manipulative, high-pressure cyber fraud schemes.' 'Cyber awareness kiosks are being set up at public places' DSP Cyber, Venkatesh said, 'We are going beyond traditional awareness drives. Advertisements are being run in theatres, and our Public Address System is being used to spread real-time traffic and cyber safety messages. Soon, we will launch the Cyber Swachta Mission to build a cleaner and safer digital space. Cyber awareness kiosks are being set up at public places, and our teams are visiting door-to-door to sensitise residents. The idea is to ensure that no citizen falls prey to fear-driven scams like digital arrests.' Police are also collaborating with banks and telecom operators for quick freezing of suspicious accounts and numbers flagged in such crimes. Woman duped of over ₹11 lakh (August 2025) A resident of Sector 35 was defrauded of more than ₹11 lakh by someone impersonating a police officer. The fraudster falsely claimed her Aadhaar was linked to a parcel sent to Thailand containing narcotics. She was then connected to a supposed IPS officer from Delhi's cybercrime cell and coerced into withdrawing her fixed deposits and transferring funds under the pretext of clearing the case. Woman loses ₹77.4 lakh (July 2025) A woman from Sector 34 fell victim to a 'digital arrest' scam, in which perpetrators posing as law enforcement agents intimidated her into transferring ₹77.4 lakh. Elderly woman duped of ₹1 crore (July 2025) A major fraud racket was busted where an elderly woman of Sector 33 was tricked into transferring ₹1.01 crore. Perpetrators posed as CBI officials, used forged documents, and manipulated her to use multiple bank accounts. The cyber cell arrested ten individuals. However, only ₹36 lakh was frozen and is slated for return.

Assets case: Court rejects vigilance clean chit to ADGP
Thiruvananthapuram : The Special Vigilance Court here on Thursday rejected the vigilance department's report that exonerated ADGP M R Ajith Kumar in the disproportionate assets case, citing that the inquiry was "incomplete" and lacking in essential procedures. The court directed the recording of the statement of petitioner Adv Neyyattinkara Nagaraju, who sought a proper investigation of allegations against the additional director general of police, before deciding whether to order a fresh probe. After examining the report approved by the govt, it said the vigilance inquiry — conducted by a special unit on the state govt's directive — failed to meet even basic investigative standards. It noted that the officer's annual asset statements and income tax returns from 1994 to 2025 were never collected, while the raids on his residence and flat yielded no critical documents. There was no valuation certificate for gold, silver, diamonds and other valuables, despite the possibility of such an assessment by relevant authorities. The court further observed that bank accounts, fixed deposit receipts and bank lockers were not examined, nor was permission under the All India Services (Conduct) Rules, 1968, produced for the purchase or sale of movable and immovable assets. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Authorities like the registration IG and the land revenue commissioner were never contacted to identify undisclosed assets. The investigators also failed to collect call detail records from nodal officers or analyse the call and tower location data of the accused through the hi-tech enquiry cell, it said. No clear distinction was made between legitimate income and alleged unexplained wealth, and the percentage of asset growth over the period was never calculated. It also cited the failure to trace the teak logs allegedly removed from the Malappuram SP office and accused the vigilance of deliberately withholding incriminating evidence. A key omission flagged by the court was the disregard for the testimony of the Vanchiyoor SBI home loan chief manager that the construction of a multi-storeyed residence by the accused in Kowdiar was a Rs 3.58-crore project — a figure absent from the final report. The vigilance probe, which followed allegations raised by former MLA P V Anwar, concluded that the property transactions and construction records were in order and there was no proof of illegal wealth accumulation. The officer had courted controversies earlier too, with allegations coming up over his role in last year's Pooram sabotage row, his meetings with RSS leaders, his tractor ride to Sabarimala and links with a gold smuggling racket. PCMC recovers 167cr property tax in amnesty period
Navi Mumbai: Panvel City Municipal Corporation recovered Rs 167 crore property tax paid by 60,082 property holders. Since the launch of the amnesty scheme, 37,519 property owners have taken 90% fine exemption with a day left (Aug 15) and collectively availed Rs 64.8 crore. A protest was held on Wednesday on the property tax. The scheme was effective from July 18 to Sept 20 but split into four tiers. Those clearing their outstanding property tax between Aug 16 and Aug 31 would get 75% rebate, between Sept 1 and Sept 10 would get 50% discount and from Sept 11 to Sept 20, a 25% waiver of the fine amount. Thousands hit the streets in Panvel to take part in a protest rally covering about 1 km between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk and PCMC head office. Seven major political parties besides various social and other forums joined the protest terming the property tax levied as unlawful, impractical and intended to divert public attention. Kharghar Colony Forum president, Leena Garad, had appealed to the residents not to pay the property taxes even under the amnesty scheme. Later, leaders jointly handed over a memorandum to the PCMC chief, Mangesh Chitale. Talking to the media, Patil alleged that the ruling party had promised to not hike any tax for five years but started collecting the property tax with fine/interest. There is no rebate offered on the basic property tax but the amnesty scheme launched is only to provide relief on the fines/interest amounts. The parties have alleged that despite PCMC being a 'D' class municipal corporation, the property tax levied is equivalent to that of 'A' class civic body like Mumbai.
