Josie Gibson's weight loss journey as she makes sad admission about her body
As This Morning star Josie Gibson reveals she has been diagnosed with gout after taking part in a lavish travel show, we take a look back at her painful journey with her weight
When Josie Gibson shot to fame in Big Brother after vowing viewers with her loveable nature, she found instant fame came at a cost. Josie was 25 back in 2010 when she bagged 77 per cent of the vote to romp to victory on the reality TV show, making her the most popular winner to date.
But after she became well known overnight, the star admitted she used to cry a lot after being trolled over her weight. "I used to cry on a daily basis after coming out of Big Brother," the This Morning presenter told Mail Online.
This week Josie, now 40, revealed she had been diagnosed with gout ahead of filming her new TV project The 1970s Diet. She had recently presented the Channel 5 travelogue Around The World In First Class and told The Mirror: "I caught a lot of flights, I drank a lot of champagne, I ate a lot of rich food and I had little sleep. That's how I ended up getting gout."
Unexpected 'healthy' foods that actually cause gout as Josie Gibson reveals diagnosis
A prevalent condition for the wealthy in medieval times, gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the body, leading to painful, swollen joints. It most commonly affects the big toe but can also affect joints like the ankles, knees, and feet.
"I kept saying to the nurse: 'My toes keep hurting'," said Josie. "I thought gout was only for old men but I have been living quite a lavish life."
The presenter went onto lose six stone in a year in 2014 after she hired a personal trainer and in 2018, after she gave birth to her son Reggie, significantly overhauled her diet by banishing refined sugar from the menu. "I first embarked on a weight-loss journey in 2013 when I shed 6st over a year with a combination of healthy eating and exercise," she told Closer magazine.
Josie released two fitness DVDs that year before 2016, when she underwent a tummy tuck procedure to remove excess skin from her stomach following her weight loss. Welcoming her son Reggie in 2018 made the star reassess her priorities and focus less on her weight.
"I put on around four-and-a-half stone while I was pregnant," she said. "I realised that there was more important things to focus on in life, rather than losing weight and hating my body."
Shockingly, the star had once told new! magazine she "came very close one day to ending it all" over the cruel trolling over her fluctuating weight. "I spent years hating my body," she said in an Instagram post. "It's been the laughing stock of magazines and social media posts."
In 2020, a Twitter user messaged the star to say: "I don't mean to be rude but @Josiestweet is absolutely vile. It breaks my heart when I look at how fat she has got again." Josie quote-tweeted the cruel quip and replied: "But you are being rude, so you do mean to be rude."
"I hid my pain and tears with humour, making jokes about myself before others could," said the star. "But inside, I was deeply unhappy, convinced I'd be obese for life and that no-one could ever love or want me."
Josie's new Channel 5 show will see her swap fancy restaurants for boiled potatoes, liver and spam as she eats a typical 1970s diet. Only 10 per cent of people in the UK were obese in the decade, thanks to living more active lifestyles with smaller portions and less snacking.
This figure has now tripled. "I was surprised by that," said the star. "I think of the 1970s and I think of madeira cake, trifles, angel delight… it doesn't scream healthy."

Fern Britton confirms grim moment ex Phil Vickery 'stopped talking to her'
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Fern Britton has revealed that her ex-husband Phil Vickery ceased all communication with her following the death of her mother. The 67-year-old television personality and the This Morning chef were said to have kept a "basic" level of contact after their separation in 2020, but Fern has now disclosed that she hasn't heard from him since her mother Ruth passed away in 2018. Speaking to Yours magazine, Fern confessed: "He hasn't spoken to me for six years now. As soon as my mum died, he stopped talking to me." The Celebrity Big Brother 2024 participant maintains that she makes a concerted effort not to speak ill of Phil for the sake of their 23 year old daughter Winnie. READ MORE - Edinburgh restaurant that 'won't break the bank' crowned Scotland's best READ MORE - Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's one word that left Queen fearing 'disaster' She stated: "Winnie adores him. I'm not going to bad-mouth him in front of her; at least, I try very hard not to. I was the child of divorced parents and my mum never bad-mouthed my father." Fern also ended her first marriage to TV executive Clive Jones, which was finalised in 2000 after they separated in 1998 following a decade of matrimony. The presenter, who has now left the television industry to pen her own novels, says she's channelled her heartbreak into her new career, reports the Mirror. Fern, who shares 31 year old twin sons Jack and Harry, and a 27 year old daughter named Grace with Clive, admitted: "Like many people, I've been through divorce so I have an understanding of it. And that made it easier to write about in the new book." The television presenter has expressed her gratitude for her children's support following the loss of her parents, Ruth and actor Tony Britton. She shared: "Mum was in her 90s but, no matter how old you are, you're still a child to somebody. "As soon as I heard, I went and told the girls; they were both living with me at that stage. "'I'm an orphan,' I announced and they burst out laughing. It was exactly the tonic I needed." After shedding five stone by having gastric band surgery in 2006, Fern's weight fluctuated following her split from Phil after two decades of marriage. Bella magazine reports her saying: "It took me about a year to realise that I put a lot of weight on. Looking back, I was in a very bad place and gradually I started to pull myself out of it." Fern is now focused on maintaining her health for her children's sake. She emphasised: "It is my duty to stay as healthy as I can for the sake of my children. "I don't want them to feel guilty about not seeing me or be worried about me."

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's one word that left Queen fearing 'disaster'
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info An insider has claimed that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's complete departure from their Royal duties hinged on the use of a single word. Now, five years after their dramatic step back as senior royals, the Sussexes seem to have fully moved on. The couple has been busy with their commercial projects, with Meghan increasingly sharing glimpses of her private life on Instagram, including a recent clip where she's seen twerking with Harry as they anticipated the arrival of their daughter, Princess Lilibet. Initially, when they announced their desire for change over five years ago, it appeared they didn't wish to leave Royal life entirely, proposing instead to "carve out a progressive new role within this institution". However, it seems a seemingly insignificant word in their announcement may have led to an all-or-nothing situation. In their statement about stepping back, the Sussexes mentioned: "We will continue to collaborate with Her Majesty The Queen, The Prince of Wales, The Duke of Cambridge and all relevant parties." READ MORE - Edinburgh restaurant that 'won't break the bank' crowned Scotland's best READ MORE - Edinburgh residents baffled as streets become 'dystopian future' for film set The Daily Mail reports that the term 'collaborate' caused a stir, with a source stating: "No-one 'collaborates' with the Queen. This is not one of those 'Kate Moss Top Shop tie-ups'." Amidst the Sussexes forging an alternate path, with Meghan in particular veering away from her past Royal life, an insider revealed: "This is exactly why Queen Elizabeth knew this whole half-in, half-out version of royalty they were lobbying for was never, ever going to work.", reports the Mirror. "Harry and Meghan were a law unto themselves from the start, pushing and pushing the envelope to their own professional and financial advantage. Her Late Majesty was nobody's fool and knew that the chances were, it would all end in disaster." Last week, Meghan released a dancing clip where she can be seen twerking to Starrkeisha's 'Baby Momma' while heavily pregnant; she lifts her skirt above the knees, throws her hands up, and gyrates low with hands on hips and legs apart. On Lilibet's fourth birthday, Meghan shared this clip commenting: "Four years ago today, this also happened. "Both of our children were a week past their due dates... so when spicy food, all that walking, and acupuncture didn't work – there was only one thing left to do!". Royal commentator Jennie Bond finds the video to be extraordinary by any measure, discussing the possible reactions from royalty. Speaking to the Mirror, the ex-BBC Royal correspondent stated: "The hours before you give birth are some of the most personal, intimate and private in the lives of any couple. "And women are perfectly entitled to do whatever they feel like to get through the waiting, and the pain. Giving birth is a serious business, and anything to lighten the mood is welcome. "However - to share those scenes with the world is utterly bizarre and, in my view, takes away all the magic of the moment. I cannot imagine why she chose to release it. Maybe show it one day to your nearest and dearest- but to anyone and everyone who wants to click on it?". "If the King has watched it, which I doubt, though he can't have missed the headlines I'm sure he would be horrified. Royalty has to carry with it some measure of dignity." But she added: "Having said all that, there's no doubt that videos like this connect in a very real way to young people. And perhaps that's what Meghan is trying to do. "My own daughter thought the video humanised both Meghan and Harry and was light-hearted and hugely relatable. It reminded her of her own pregnancies and labour and she thought it was rather charming."

The couple's relationship is going from strength to strength and now he has headed to the holiday resort for a swanky dinner. Maya captured herself travelling in a car before she danced around to a tune on the radio in the passenger seat. She looked glam for her night out, styling her raven locks into waves and opting for fresh make up, with statement earrings to accessorise. In the swanky restaurant, she captured a server chopping up steak tartre and wrote in her caption: "Only just got into this raw s***. "Still bugs me out." Another slide then saw her about to tuck into a more well-done steak, served up with tomatoes and chips. Their happy night came after the first beauty booted out from the 2025 ITV2 matchmaking series came to light, in what was a busy night for Maya. The Love Island anchor and Ruben were spotted for the first time together in public on New Year's Eve, when they shared another romantic dinner. A source at the time said: 'Maya and Ruben swapped details at the EMAs and have chatted since, but things went up a gear in early December. ROMEO RUBEN Ruben is no stranger to romantic displays. In April, Maya returned home to a bouquet of roses following a recent holiday. Maya added no caption to the image slide, simply holding the red blooms up to the camera. And it's not the first time she's been treated to an impressive floral selection as back in January, the former Radio 1 DJ showcased another selection of roses with fans claiming "they're from Ruben." NEXT STEPS The Sun was recently first to report how the loved-up pair were getting serious, and had taken their relationship to the next level. A source said: 'Maya and Rúben are getting more serious and she has met his mum Bernadette. 'She is very happy and in a great place in her personal life and her career. "It's shaping up to be a very exciting year for Maya.' She also shared her first picture with her footballer man as they enjoyed a pre Love Island break in Italy. Earlier in the week, Maya uploaded a short clip and wrote: "perv cam," as Ruben could be seen rubbing sun tan lotion on his body while in swimming shorts. Recently, it was also revealed Maya has started taking Portuguese lessons. Speaking about her take on relationships previously, Maya said: 'I'm such a lover but I am a big leaver as well. 'I know what makes me happy and I know what I like — and this is no disrespect to anyone I've been in a relationship with, but if it's not that then I will leave it. 'I only want you if you are going to add to that or make it better, otherwise I am not really on it.' 7 They also tucked into steak tartare Credit: Instagram 7 Maya has cut a glam figure on the current Love Island season Credit: Shutterstock Editorial 7 The pair recently shared their first picture together Credit: Instagram
