Chch United end Royals' four-game winning run
The Dunedin City Royals were unable to make it five on the trot when they lost 2-0 to Christchurch United at Tahuna Park on Saturday.
Christchurch United threatened early in the Southern League clash, but just as the Royals looked to be settling, they were caught napping and Ben Campbell brought down his opponent on the edge of the box.
He was red carded in the 17th minute, a pivotal moment in the game.
The Royals continued to probe and threaten with attacks that troubled Christchurch United.
Daniel Meyn broke the deadlock in the 40th minute for the visitors.
The Royals came out of the break strong and continued to frustrate Christchurch United.
Replacements Will Turner, Rhys Christie, Luke Salisbury, Max Davidson and Luis Deaker tilted the balance in favour of the Royals, who had multiple attacks — including Turner coming close with a curled shot.
They were unlucky to concede with the final kick of the match — Waisea Henry's in the fifth minute of added time, which ensured the visitors remained at the top of the table.
Coach Blair Scoullar was disappointed not to walk away with a point, but praised his side's attitude, intensity and resilience after playing nearly 80 minutes with 10 players.
Wanaka also suffered to a home defeat, going down 3-2 to Nomads United to lose their unbeaten home run.
Wānaka enjoyed most of the possession in the first half and took a deserved 1-0 lead into halftime thanks to Ronan Dillow's 11th minute goal.
Nomads equalised when Caleb Cotton scored from a penalty in the 63rd minute, and further goals to Guy Reeves and Cooper Goldsmith gave them a 3-1 lead with five minutes to go.
Dillow reduced the deficit in injury time by scoring his second for Wanaka.
Cashmere Technical beat Ferrymead Bays 3-2, Selwyn United and Universities of Canterbury had a 2-2 draw and Coastal Spirit won 3-0 against Nelson Suburbs.

University are top on goal difference after thumping Northern Hearts 9-1.
Ashton Hodson opened the scoring on 11 minutes, and it was 3-0 to the students before Bailey Chambers pulled one back just after the half hour mark.
Simba Muwunganirwa grabbed a hat-trick, and Blake Allison and Oscar Crowe both scored braces. Sam Clegg rounded out the scoring.
Northern had a much tougher task against the previously unbeaten Royals, but prevailed 2-1.
After dominating early in wet and windy conditions, Northern found themselves 1-0 down after George Barker buried a penalty in the 16th minute.
Toby Orchiston headed home the equaliser in first half stoppage time.
The second half continued to be a fierce battle, with both teams sharing possession. Northern created better chances and the Royals looked likely on the counterattack.
Northern's winner came in the 60th minute, when Asti Wallace whipped a free kick 30m out from goal into the top corner.
Queens Park left it late to record their first win of the season, with two goals in injury time helping to overcome Green Island 3-1.
Sebastian Castillo Viveros' eighth minute opener was cancelled out by Harrison Mclean's 60th minute penalty for Green Island.
The game look to be heading for a draw until Zac Owen-Gear pounced on a loose ball to rifle an unstoppable shot into the back of the net in the first minute of added time. Ryo Okuyama added another in the 95th minute.
Roslyn Wakari recorded a 4-2 victory against Mosgiel.
The game was evenly poised 1-1 until the stroke of halftime, when Roslyn's George Holland pounced from close range to make it 2-1.
Reese Burtenshaw had earlier levelled for Mosgiel after Hamish Mair's 25th minute opener for Roslyn.
Two near identical breakaway goals to Ben William-Davies midway through the second half gave Roslyn a 4-1 lead. Harvey Stevens pulled one back for the home side but Roslyn claimed the three points.
— In the women's South Island League, Roslyn captain Amelie East-Giles scored a hattrick to lead her side to a 6-3 win against Halswell United at home. University had a 4-0 win against Coastal Spirit and the Royals had a 2-0 victory against Universities of Canterbury.

Royals downed after late flurry of goals
Cashmere Technical came from behind to beat the Dunedin City Royals in bitter conditions on Saturday. After the Royals held a 1-0 lead at halftime in the Southern League clash in Dunedin, the visitors pushed through with a couple of late goals to head home with a 3-2 victory. It put the Canterbury side in third place in what has been a tight field. Cashmere now hold a record of five wins, one draw and three losses, while the Royals are in joint fifth place. The game was scheduled for Tahuna Park but moved to the Logan Park turf due to the weather. The Royals held a 1-0 lead at halftime following Will Turner's opener in the 28th minute. Cashmere came out of the break with a determined approach and Yusi Van Dan eventually found an equaliser in the 58th minute. It became a stalemate through the middle until the floodgates opened, and a flurry of last-minute goals ensued. Jed Collings nudged the Royals back in front with his shot in the 86th minute. But Cashmere replacement Charlie Peacocke fired home back-to-back goals in the 89th and 90th minutes for Cashmere to claim all three points. Wanaka had a tough task away against top-of-the-table Christchurch United. The home side inflicted all the damage in the first half to secure a 7-0 win and remain on top of the league. Oliver van Rijessel buried his shot in the bottom right corner in the opening two minutes to give Christchurch the lead. Josh Tollervey added another on 18 minutes, banging home in nearly the same spot as their opener. Then forward Shogo Osawa sparked the start of his flurry. He headed home from a corner on the 23rd minute, before he set up Joel Stevens. Stevens dished off the ball to Osawa at the top of the box, and Osawa clipped it behind for Stevens to run on to and finish in a lovely mood. Osawa then chipped over for his second in the 46th minute and added another to complete a first-half hat-trick and give Christchurch a 6-0 lead at halftime. It was a game in yet again dreadful conditions, as the rain began to pelt into the night. Ben Stroud made it 7-0, but Wanaka tightened up a lot in the second half to quieten the home side. In the other Saturday Southern League games, Ferrymead Bays and Nomads United had 1-1 draw and Coastal Spirit thumped Universities of Canterbury 7-2. In the women's South Island league, Otago University celebrated a 3-0 win over Nelson Suburbs in Dunedin. Leila Hausia-Haugen scored the first of the game then set up University's second. She broke away and drew Nelson's goalkeeper out and cut it back across for Georgia Nixon to score. Ruby Brathwaite then cut back across the box and put the ball on her left foot and gave it a go, which curled into the top corner. University had plenty of chances in the second half but were unable to find the back of the net again. The table-topping Royals women charged to an eighth consecutive win as they beat Cashmere 2-1 in Christchurch yesterday. In the men's ODT Southern Premiership, Green Island and Otago University battled to a 3-3 draw, and the Royals had a 2-2 draw with Roslyn-Wakari. George Duncan scored a brace for Mosgiel in their 2-0 win over Old Boys, and Michael Larsen also bagged two for Queens Park in their 4-2 victory over Northern Hearts. Some games in the women's Premiership were postponed due to the rough weather and ground conditions. Sophia Body scored the winner for Roslyn in the 41st minute in their 1-0 win over Queens Park.

Cashmere Tech winger's magic marks milestone match

PHOTO: CARL COZZONE/DUST MEDIA Cashmere Technical winger Lyle Matthysen celebrated his 250th appearance for the club in style, netting all four goals in a commanding 4-1 Chatham Cup win over Coastal Spirit on Sunday. Now, the 26-year-old hopes the result can ignite a turnaround in Tech's Southern League campaign. Currently sitting third on the ladder, Tech are six points adrift of league leaders Christchurch United and five behind Coastal Spirit in the race for the two National League qualification spots. 'It's what we need. (We) definitely need to start turning up and lifting our performances so we can book a top-two spot,' Matthysen said. 'Next week will be a tough game too (away at Dunedin City Royals) so we need to be firing.' He became just the third player to reach 250 appearances for Cashmere Technical, joining Tom Schwarz and Danny Knight. Matthysen said he never expected to reach the milestone when he debuted, but it eventually became a personal goal. 'As you get onto the first milestone of 50, 100, 200, things like that, you start thinking 'alright, I do want to push on and try and get up there with the older boys',' he said. 'I do love the club, been here for 10 or 11 years now, so I do want to strive on and do great things.' Sunday's cup win also saw Coastal Spirit suffer an early setback, with defender Jack Hale sent off just eight minutes into the match. They were also without first-choice goalkeeper Ellis Hare-Reid due to a head knock. Tech now progress to the third round of the knockout Chatham Cup, joining fellow Canterbury sides Ferrymead Bays and Christchurch United, who beat Selwyn United 4-1 and Nomads 2-0 respectively. This weekend, United looks to keep their spot at the top of the Southern League when they play Wanaka on Saturday, knowing Coastal could overtake them with a win in their game against Universities. Royals reign after close-fought match
The top-of-the-table clash in the Women's South Island League between Dunedin City Royals and Otago University was a close-fought battle. But the Royals came out on top courtesy of Amy Hislop's goal in the 18th minute to secure a 1-0 victory. After a period of sustained early pressure, University were unable to clear and an attempted headed clearance landed at Hislop's feet two yards out to finish. The Royals continued to have most of the possession in the first half and the game saw some robust challenges with the students' Ella Morgan having to be carried off before halftime. The second half was more of an even affair with both teams doing extremely well to stop shots and cancelling each other out. The win puts the Royals on 21 points and University remain in second on 18 points. Roslyn Wakari made the long trip up to Nelson and took a 15th-minute lead through Zara Pratley. But Nelson replied with two goals in three minutes to lead 2-1 before the break to win. In the Southern League, the Royals' men travelled to Selwyn and were rewarded with a 5-2 win. It looked promising for the Royals early on when Brady Jacobs had a ninth minute shot that struck the post. But Selwyn played the ball through the middle and Finlay Cottoem struck from the edge of the box. The home side doubled their lead when Luke Mackay scored from the penalty spot on 31 minutes. Jacobs fired home a volley in the 33rd minute and the Royals very nearly equalised just before halftime. The equaliser eventually came 17 minutes from time when Max Davidson rifled home from the edge of the box. Charlie Fawcett, who was introduced as a substitute only two minutes earlier, was on hand to benefit from the Selwyn keeper spilling the ball. Fellow substitute Cato Williams found himself unmarked in the penalty box and he made no mistake striking home a well-directed cross from the left flank in the 89th minute. Jacobs scored the goal of the game in the sixth minute of injury time, cutting in from the left wing and unleashing an unstoppable shot from outside the penalty box . The Royals move into third-equal on in a very congested table with five teams on 13 points. After last week's heartache of conceding a late goal to lose in Nelson , Wānaka again succumbed to a late goal to lose at home 2-1 to Ferrymead Bays. Anthony Sprowson pulled the home side level with a 22nd minute equaliser. However, Bays Kasper Marson scored the winner with seven minutes left. Nomads upset Nelson 3-0 and Cashmere Tech won 8-4 against Universities of Canterbury. • Queens Park grabbed local bragging rights winning 2-1 against Old Boys in the Southern Premiership Invercargill darby. Queens Park took the lead in first half stoppage time when Cameron Johnson fired home from close range. Old Boys equalised with nine minutes remaining when a long ball forward caused Queens Park keeper Jayden Castle to come out of his box and with Old Boys pouring forward they regained possession, having their initial shot blocked on the line however Jayden Dawson was on hand to score. In the fifth minute of stoppage time Anton Fitzgerald secured the win. Northern continued their 100% record claiming their sixth consecutive victory with a 3-0 win against Northern Hearts. Rory Hibbert scored a brace in the first half and claimed his second consecutive hat-trick when he scored early in the second. Green Island upset Roslyn 3-1 at Ellis Park to claim their first win of the season. The home side started slow with Green Island looking to press and hassle. The tactic worked when they took the lead through Seb Smith. Roslyn equalised midway through the first half when Joe Wood pounced on the loose ball following a corner. Green Island took the lead on 66 minutes through Harrison Mclean's penalty and Ryan Walker secured the win when Roslyn failed to clear and he tapped home from close range. Mosgiel benefited from Roslyn's slip and moved into third place on the table with a comprehensive 6-0 win against the Royals. It was 3-0 at the break thanks to goals from Harvey Stephens, Reece Butenshaw and Morgan Day. Three goals in four minutes in the second half did the damage for the Plainsmen with Stephens claiming his hat-trick and Kowin Hancock getting the goal his all round play deserved.
