Saints QB Derek Carr retiring due to shoulder injury that requires surgery: Report

Yahoo10-05-2025

New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr is retiring due to a shoulder injury that requires surgery, NFL Network is reporting. Carr took an injection for the injury and has worked through rehab, but medical evaluations determined that a surgical procedure was necessary to fully repair his right shoulder.
Surgery would have sidelined Carr for six months and meant that he would be on injured reserve through the 2025-26 season, according to NFL Network's Mike Garofalo. Rather than go through that process, the 11-year veteran decided to retire.
Carr, 34, was limited to 10 games last season due to a hand injury suffered while scrambling and leaping for a first down during a Week 14 matchup versus the New York Giants. While he later cleared concussion protocol, Carr believes that he also injured his right shoulder on that play and missed the final four games of the season.

49ers Coach Reveals Reason for Jason Pinnock Signing

49ers Coach Reveals Reason for Jason Pinnock Signing originally appeared on Athlon Sports. New defensive coordinator Robert Saleh takes back over a defense he led to almost an elite level back in 2019. Advertisement He left in 2020 to become the head coach of the New York Jets, but returns after things didn't work out well out east (shocker). But after spending four seasons in New York, Saleh compiled some nice draft picks for the Jets, and he's brought a couple with him back to San Francisco. One, safety Jason Pinnock, was drafted as a corner, but moved to safety after. Pinnock lasted just one season with the Jets before joining the cross-town rival Giants, where he found footing. 'We drafted J.P. as a corner and halfway through his rookie year we moved him over to safety," Saleh said. "Credit some of the guys at the Jets that are still there, just kind of beat him out in that second year. But I've always been a fan of his athleticism, his length, his football IQ. Advertisement "He's a really good football player and just being with him over the course of the first couple of months, he's grown significantly from a maturity standpoint and he's attacked the heck out of it. He's going for it. So, with Jason, you're getting a guy that's going to add athleticism and speed and football IQ to your football team. And now that's just a matter of him competing and holding onto it.' Saleh had moderate success from 2017-2018 as the defensive coordinator before 2019 brought defensive dominance to San Francisco and helped the team to a Super Bowl LIV appearance. Now he's back home and is intent on rebuilding the 49ers' defense into what it was before he left. A Super Bowl contender. And it starts with the new rookie class and free agent additions. Giants Get Malik Nabers Injury Update

Giants Get Malik Nabers Injury Update originally appeared on Athlon Sports. A telling sign of a young receiver's ability can be observed in how they manage their performance in a struggling offense or with subpar quarterback play. New York Giants receiver Malik Nabers dealt with such a life last season though it failed to limit his ability. Advertisement Nabers shined in his rookie season, finishing with 1,204 yards and seven touchdowns on 109 receptions. Needless to say, he lived up to every aspect of his first-round projection coming out of the college ranks. The Giants' struggles to compete last season overshadowed this brilliance, though they hope to turn that around in Nabers' second season. A new starter will emerge from a stable of quarterbacks including Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston and rookie Jaxson Dart, hopefully advancing this offense from its lackluster output last year. However, a frustrating offense has limited Nabers' ability to participate on the field. A lingering toe injury continues to keep him out of anything more than walk-throughs to this point. Head coach Brian Daboll provided an update on Nabers' status this week as the team gears up for the start of mandatory minicamp on June 17. Advertisement 'Nothing serious, but we're being smart with him in terms of the rehab part of it,' Daboll told reporters. 'He's had it for a while, back in college, too, so just trying to be smart.' By all accounts, this appears more cautionary than anything. Nabers has a promising campaign ahead so rushing him back for lighter workouts makes little sense. Considering this ailment has followed him from his time at LSU, it may not go away entirely as the Giants progress toward training camp and the remainder of the summer. But Nabers will be a central piece of the Giants' long-term plans, so they certainly want him as close to 100 percent as possible ahead of a big Year 2. Don't expect this to slow him down come September. Bengals Release Star Defender Following Career Year

The Cincinnati Bengals are parting ways with one of their star defenders following his career year in 2024. The Cincinnati Bengals defense is getting a little bit weaker after it was announced on Monday that the team is releasing star linebacker Germaine Pratt, according to NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero. Pratt, 29, is coming off arguably the best season of his six-year NFL career. In 2024, he recorded a career-high 143 tackles (80 solo), two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and two interceptions — one of only three players with at least 140 tackles and six turnover plays. Advertisement However, he requested to be traded in February with just one year left on his three-year, $20.25 million contract and coming off a very disappointing season in which the Bengals defense allowed the seventh-most points per game (25.5) and eighth-most total yards per game (348.3). Pratt's release will also save Cincinnati $5.6 million in salary cap space and allow the team to get younger at the position. The Bengals selected South Carolina linebacker Demetrius Knight Jr. in the second round (No. 49 overall) in the 2025 NFL Draft. He will join linebackers Logan Wilson, Oren Burks, and Barrett Carter, among others, in Cincinnati. He developed into a consistent starter and team captain over his six years. Advertisement During that span, Pratt racked up 616 tackles (355 solo), 3.5 sacks, seven forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries, seven interceptions, and 23 passes defensed. NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported in February that Pratt was close with former Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, who has since joined the Colts as their defensive coordinator. So Indianapolis is a team to keep an eye on for the new free agent linebacker. This article originally appeared on Steelers Now: Bengals Release Star Defender Following Career Year Related Headlines
