MCMC removes 49,082 scam posts as of Aug 1, says deputy minister
Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching stated that 63,652 posts were taken down in 2024, a sharp rise from only 6,297 in 2023.
'The spread of scam content, including fake accounts and impersonation of public figures, has grown rapidly in recent years,' she said during the Excellent Service Award (APC) 2024 Ceremony at RTM Sarawak.
Teo emphasised the need for all parties to adapt to fast-evolving technology, including artificial intelligence (AI).
She noted that while AI simplifies tasks, it cannot replace core values like effort, dedication, and excellence in public service.
'What is important is that the use of this technology must be done wisely, prudently, and in a controlled manner,' she added.
She stressed that ethical AI adoption ensures optimal service improvements without compromising integrity.
To combat scams and fake news, the ministry provides tools like Biar Betul, AIFA chatbot, and Sebenarnya.my.
'AIFA has received 142,257 messages as of July 31, 2025, averaging nearly 769 daily,' Teo revealed.
These initiatives help the public access verified information and improve online safety awareness.
Teo also highlighted Malaysia's rise to 23rd in the 2025 World Competitiveness Ranking, up 11 places from 2024.
She attributed this to the government's commitment to structural reforms and nationwide improvements.
Earlier, she presented APC awards to 80 recipients from Communications Ministry agencies.
She also extended Tabung Kasih@HAWANA aid to families of two late RTM Sarawak staff members.
Irwan Budi Annuar, 51, passed away on August 6, while Georgina Clare, 45, died on August 12. - Bernama

MCMC develops child protection rules under Online Safety Act 2025
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is drafting a subsidiary instrument under the Online Safety Act 2025 (Act 866) to enhance child protection and online risk management. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil stated that the MCMC is exploring mandatory AI-generated content labelling for service providers. 'This initiative aims to help users identify misleading or manipulated content, reducing the spread of harmful information online,' he said. Service providers must also submit an online safety plan to ensure compliance with Act 866. He emphasised that Act 866 was enacted to strengthen online safety and regulate harmful material. An Online Safety Committee will be formed to advise the MCMC on digital safety matters. The committee will be led by the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) and include licensed service providers. Fahmi also revealed that MCMC requested the removal of 439 deepfake-related fraudulent social media posts this year. MCMC Developing Subsidiary Instrument Under Act 866 To Protect Children
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is developing a subsidiary instrument under the Online Safety Act 2025 (Act 866) to address issues related to online child protection and online risk management. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the MCMC is also looking into the need for service providers to introduce labelling for content automatically generated using artificial intelligence (AI), through a specific code. 'This initiative aims to help users identify potentially misleading, manipulative, or inauthentic content, in line with efforts to reduce the risk of inaccurate information or harmful content spreading on online platforms. 'To ensure transparency and accountability, service providers will also be required to submit an online safety plan outlining their compliance with obligations under Act 866,' he said during a question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today. He said this in response to a question from Datuk Shamshulkahar Mohd Deli (BN-Jempol), who wanted to know whether the government would introduce laws requiring content publishers to label content, including images and videos, generated or manipulated by AI. Fahmi explained that Act 866 was enacted to strengthen online safety in Malaysia and regulate harmful content. He added that the government will also establish an Online Safety Committee to advise and provide recommendations to MCMC on online safety matters. The committee will be managed by the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) and will include representatives from multiple stakeholders, including licensed service providers. Meanwhile, Fahmi said that between Jan 1 and Aug 15 this year, MCMC had requested the removal of 439 pieces of social media content containing fraudulent elements created with deepfake technology.

Task force set up in Johor to monitor school bullying
JOHOR BARU: The state government has established a task force comprising police and other agencies to monitor school bullying. The state education and information committee chairman, Aznan Tamin, stated that at least three state executive councillors, holding various portfolios including health, education, Islamic affairs and welfare, would be part of the task force. The task force met for the first time yesterday, he said during a press conference after the 2025 Citra Karisma event in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). Aznan was asked to comment on the case involving a 10-year-old boy battling nasal cancer, who suffered a concussion after allegedly being bullied at a religious school here. The incident took place in February. Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, in a Facebook post yesterday, said such cases must be handled fairly and transparently in line with established guidelines. Azman stressed that although the incident happened about six months ago, the state took the matter seriously and decisions would only be made after thorough discussions involving all parties. He said Johor also plans to introduce awareness programmes under the Johor Safe campaign and No Bully campaign to address similar incidents in schools. Meanwhile, UTM celebrated the excellence of its staff at the 2025 Citra Karisma event, honouring 392 recipients with the Excellent Service Award and 152 others across 29 categories. Officiated by Aznan, who is also an alumnus of UTM, the event recognised outstanding contributions in teaching, research, leadership and administration.
