Sharma earlier served as executive chairman-cum-director of the 'open and distance learning' (ODL) cell of the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) in Assam on deputation.
She was also responsible for the implementation of National Council for Teacher Education's two-year diploma in elementary education programme through SCERT's distance mode.
'The approval to government of Assam was for 59 recognised institutions with a capacity of 100 each for total of 27,897 government teachers. However, she opened 347 study centres and enrolled 1,06,828 trainees instead of 27,897 trainees in order to collect more funds,' the ED said in a statement.
She opened five bank accounts for the ODL cell, where she was the sole signatory, which was in contravention of the Assam Financial Responsibility and Budget Management Act, 2005.

Couple rescued from bonded labour in Anaji village
MADURAI: The district administration on Thursday rescued a bonded labourer couple, who had been made to work as herders in Anaji village in Madurai district. The rescued labourers -- K Ragu and his wife V Radha, both from Perumagalur village in Peraoorani taluk in Thanjavur district -- have been sent to their native village with necessary compensation. According to a press note issued by collector K J Praveen Kumar, the couple had borrowed Rs 2,70,000 from an individual in Thanjavur, and five months ago, they were sent to Anaji to work as herders on a patta land owned by an individual named Anandan. Based on a complaint, the district officials held an inspection on August 7 and found the couple working as herders for a monthly wage of Rs 9,000. They were treated as bonded labourers and were not provided access to basic facilities, stated the press note. The two were provided compensation through the labour welfare department and were sent to their native village with the support of revenue and police officials, added the press note.

Elderly man from Mumbai loses Rs 9 crore after falling for ‘online love' scam
An 80-year-old Mumbai man fell in love on social media and was cheated of nearly Rs 9 crore by scammers. The man sent money 734 times to the scammers, totalling the was April 2023, when the old man sent a friend request to a woman named 'Sharvi' on Facebook. At first, it was refused, but a few days later the same woman sent a request. The matter progressed and both of them started chatting, followed by regular chats on introduced herself as a divorcee, a mother of two children who was facing several problems. She asked for money from the old man on several occasions on the pretext of children's illness, financial crisis etc. Every time, she used to come up with a new excuse and the old man was ready to help every time. Following this, more characters were added to the story. Another woman named Kavita entered the scenario, sending obscene messages followed by asking for money for a sick child and money for came Dinaz, who called herself Sharvi's sister. She said that Sharvi had passed away and, before dying, she wanted the old man to pay her hospital bills. Dinaz even sent screenshots of WhatsApp chats and fooled the man into sending the money. When he told her to return the money, Dinaz threatened to commit this, a woman named Jasmine entered the scene, who started pleading for help by calling herself Dinaz's friend. And the old man sent money to her too. One story after another was created and the old man kept getting entangled in April 2023 and January 2025, the old man transferred money a total of 734 times, amounting to around 8.7 crores. With all the savings exhausted, he borrowed 2 lakhs from his daughter-in-law and asked for 5 lakhs from his son got suspicious, following which the whole truth came everything was revealed, the elderly man was so shocked he had to be admitted to the hospital. Doctors said that the elderly man had dementia, a disease in which the memory and understanding power gradually July 22, the elderly man complained to the cyber crime helpline '1930' and an FIR was registered on August 6. Food safety goes for a toss in Tirupati
Tirupati: Many eateries and restaurants in the pilgrim city of Tirupati -- which attracts tens of thousands of devotees and tourists every day -- are brazenly posing serious health risks to their patrons and customers by condoning unhygienic practices with a 'chalta hai' attitude, while the understaffed food authorities make sporadic inspections. A recent series of surprise inspections brought to light widespread violations, revealing, inter alia, stocking of stale and spoilt products, unsafe food handling and unhygienic practices in nondescript eateries as well as big and famed hotels and restaurants. The inspections, led jointly by the Food Safety and Legal Metrology Departments, uncovered disturbing lapses across major commercial zones, including areas around the railway station and the bus stand. In many cases, food was found to be prepared using rotten ingredients, adulterated oils, and contaminated water, with kitchens operating in disgustingly unhygienic conditions. Of the 2,000+ licensed food establishments in the district, 21 of those inspected were served notices under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and nearly 26 kilograms of spoilt food was confiscated and destroyed on the spot. In one outlet, officials seized 10 kilograms of stale non-vegetarian food items, including decomposed chicken biryani and mushrooms. Several samples of grains, spices, and prepared food were picked up for lab testing. The enforcement drive saw 18 joint teams, each comprising a Food Safety Officer and a Legal Metrology Inspector, carrying out inspections under the supervision of senior officials. Inspections per se take place once in a blue moon due to systemic gaps. Reported staff shortage at various levels in the Food Safety Department has hampered continual monitoring. With just three designated officers – of whom one is on long leave and another tied up with a specific case in Tirumala –inspections are few and far between. The post of Food Controller is currently being handled by an officer from Nellore. The Legal Metrology Department found 17 restaurants flouting norms under the Legal Metrology Act 2009. Infractions ranged from use of unverified or non-standard weighing scales to overpricing bottled water and failure to display mandatory product labels. Officials emphasised that, despite repeated warnings, many of the traders supplying various items to eateries and restaurants continue to operate without valid FSSAI licence or registration. A previous probe by the Joint Collector had resulted in imposition of penalties exceeding Rs 4.9 lakh across 20 cases involving expired goods and misleading food labelling. Shocked by the scale of violations, the authorities have warned that enforcement will now intensify, with stiffer penalties for repeat offenders.
