MQM-P criticises PPP's stance on canals project

Express Tribune05-04-2025
Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) leader Dr. Farooq Sattar has criticised the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) for its inconsistent stance on the six-canal project. He stated that President Asif Ali Zardari initially supported the project, but the PPP is now opposing it due to public pressure.
Speaking at a press conference at MQM-P's central office in Bahadurabad on Friday, Dr. Sattar demanded that the president should apologise to the public for this reversal.
Senior party leaders Aminul Haque, Nasreen Jalil, and Fozia Jamal were also present at the conference.
Dr. Sattar also highlighted his party's achievements, giving credit to the party for the recent 12-17 per cent reduction in electricity prices announced by the prime minister. He described this as a significant relief for citizens. He revealed plans for an additional reduction of Rs6 per unit after during an upcoming MQM-P event in Karachi, where the prime minister will also be present.
"Yesterday, the prime minister announced a significant reduction in electricity tariffs for consumers across the country, ranging from 12 to 17 per cent. This reduction is a considerable relief provided to the public by the coalition government."
Emphasising MQM-P's priorities, Dr. Sattar stated that the party focuses on resolving public issues like water and electricity rather than pursuing ministerial positions.

US-Pakistan landmark deal to enhance growing cooperation: PM Shehbaz

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif termed on Thursday the recently concluded trade deal with the United States as landmark, saying that the agreement will enhance the growing cooperation between the two countries. 'I wish to convey my profound thanks to President Trump for his leadership role in finalization of the historic US-Pakistan trade agreement, successfully concluded by our two sides in Washington, last night,' the PM wrote on his official social media X. 'This landmark deal will enhance our growing cooperation so as to expand the frontiers of our enduring partnership in days to come.' The PM's statement comes after the US president announced that his administration struck a deal with Pakistan in which Washington would work with Islamabad in developing the South Asian nation's oil reserves. 'We have just concluded a Deal with the Country of Pakistan, whereby Pakistan and the United States will work together on developing their massive Oil Reserves,' Trump wrote on social media. 'We are in the process of choosing the Oil Company that will lead this Partnership. Who knows, maybe they'll be selling Oil to India some day!' Pakistan faced a potential 29% tariff on exports to the United States under tariffs announced by Washington in April on countries around the world. Tariffs were subsequently suspended for 90 days so negotiations could take place.

‘China's strategic red line: unwavering support for Pakistan'

This is apropos a letter to the Editor titled above carried by the newspaper on Tuesday. This contrast with India's rapid attribution and response has underlined China's preference for due process over punitive adventurism, but with a red line: Pakistan's sovereignty is non-negotiable. Professor Gao's statements are matched by facts on the ground. Over 60 percent of Pakistan's current military arsenal originates from China. This includes: JF-17 Thunder fighter jets, co-developed with China, Yuan-class submarines, providing second-strike capabilities, HQ-series air defense systems, complementing Pakistani strategic depth and P-10 and P-15 cruise and ballistic missiles, enhancing Pakistan's tactical reach. Recent reports indicate the arrival of Chinese Y-20 cargo aircraft in Pakistan, allegedly delivering defense equipment and signaling readiness for joint preparedness. This growing military interoperability indicates that the China-Pakistan military alliance is not theoretical—it is active and deepening. Professor Gao underscored this in the clearest terms: 'You are talking about a war between Pakistan and India on the one hand, and then you are talking about an ironclad alliance between China and Pakistan, and China's full commitment to defend Pakistan's sovereignty and territorial integrity.' Professor Gao's statements expand China's security perimeter beyond its own borders. By stating that China's alliance with Pakistan would activate against 'any country' threatening its integrity, he has laid out a doctrine that potentially covers US operations, Indian offensives, or multilateral actions that challenge Pakistan's territorial claims or strategic interests.
