Kyle Shanahan has good news on return of one of 49ers most important players
Head coach Kyle Shanahan had good news on that front after Thursday's joint practice with the Las Vegas Raiders, joking that McCaffrey is blowing away the GPS tracking data.
'Yeah, I think he had like 25 yesterday or something like that," Shanahan quipped about McCaffrey's miles per hour. "Trying to make Christian happy. He's doing awesome. He's as fast as he's been, as quick, as strong. He's Christian McCaffrey.'
That's exactly what San Francisco was hoping for throughout the offseason where McCaffrey was a full participant. He exited last year's training camp early and wound up missing the first eight games. Once he returned he looked ineffective before suffering a season-ending knee injury early in his fourth game.
San Francisco's offense struggled without the 2023 Offensive Player of the Year, and having him back and healthy would be the most significant lift their offense could get as they aim to bounce back from their putrid 2024 campaign.
Shanahan said he's been communicating with McCaffrey and the training staff throughout camp, and that nothing has changed about his workload through two joint practices and a preseason game with another on the way.
'Yeah, I mean I'm around Christian a lot, so I talk to him a lot," Shanahan said. "Talk to the trainers a lot, and Christian's very neurotic about his body, so you know he's on top of all that stuff. But I mean last year was the first training camp he missed with us. Missing training camp isn't always the best way to; it's definitely not the best way to keep you healthy. But getting hurt in training camp also is a problem too. So that's kind of the miserable decisions I have every single day.'
Balancing McCaffrey's workload between his readiness for Week 1 and his immediate health is one of the key pieces of Shanahan's job this preseason. So far, so good. If McCaffrey continues to look like himself, the 49ers will be in good shape to make a run back to the postseason.

49ers HC Kyle Shanahan Offers Major Christian McCaffrey Injury Update
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Perhaps the biggest reason the San Francisco 49ers went 6-11 and missed the NFL playoffs last year was injuries. They had to suffer through a gnarly rash of health problems from the beginning of training camp, and those problems followed the team around for months like a dark cumulonimbus cloud over the Bay Area. Arguably the 49ers' most devastating health problem was the Achilles issue star running back Christian McCaffrey dealt with. It caused him to sit out the first eight games of 2024, and after appearing in four games, he sustained a PCL injury that ended the season for him. McCaffrey is considered by many to be San Francisco's best and most valuable player, and needless to say, he will have to not only remain healthy but also play outstanding football for the team to return to the postseason. Fortunately, coach Kyle Shanahan said on Thursday that McCaffrey looks like McCaffrey again. He appeared in three games in 2020 due to ankle and shoulder injuries, and a hamstring ailment and ankle injury limited him to seven games in 2021. But when he has been healthy, he has been arguably the NFL's best all-around running back. He became just the third player in league history to log 1,000 receiving and rushing yards in the same season back in 2019, and in 2023, he was named the Offensive Player of the Year. That year, he led everyone with 1,459 rushing yards and 2,023 total yards from scrimmage, and he was tied for the most rushing and receiving touchdowns with 21. McCaffrey's ability to not only catch screen passes but also line up as a makeshift wide receiver makes San Francisco's offense very unpredictable and hard to handle. They will be relying on second-year man Isaac Guerendo, who showed some promise last year, to provide depth behind McCaffrey and be ready to get tons of snaps should McCaffrey get injured again. 49ers Reveal Plan For Brock Purdy, Starters vs Raiders
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Typically, NFL teams do not play their starters in preseason games. Such a decision is understandable, as coaches are concerned about players possibly getting injured in what are essentially meaningless games. Teams usually place a greater importance on how their regulars do during joint practices with other teams. But while a number of the San Francisco 49ers' regulars took part in their joint practice versus the Las Vegas Raiders on Thursday, head coach Kyle Shanahan sounds like he's ready to give at least a few of them some snaps in their game versus the Raiders on Saturday. Among the starters Shanahan plans on playing on Saturday is quarterback Brock Purdy. We'll watch this tape. I planned on getting these starters going. There might be a couple of guys I rest, but there's not a lot of—especially on the defense—healthy starters as it is. "But I'll figure that out here in the next 24 hours. But planning on some starters to play." As was the case last year, the 49ers have already been hit by a number of injuries during the preseason. Defensive end Nick Bosa, wide receiver Jauan Jennings, running back Isaac Guerendo and rookie defensive end Mykel Williams were just a few of the notable players who sat out Thursday's joint practice. Those men joined wideout Brandon Aiyuk and safety Malik Mustapha on the sideline. Aiyuk and Mustapha are expected to miss at least the first few games of the regular season due to knee injuries. A handful of backups are also dealing with injuries right now, and that could be one factor in Shanahan wanting to give his starters some playing time on Saturday. One of the team's biggest objectives for the preseason, even more so than other NFL teams, seems to be to limit injuries and manage the ones it is currently dealing with. The Niners will finish their preseason schedule on Aug. 23 versus the Los Angeles Chargers at Levi's Stadium. Their regular-season opener will be against the new-look Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field.
