'Dishevelled' woman found on Italian island after vanishing from Ireland
The Irish Mirror has confirmed that the woman was found dishevelled and disoriented in a train station in Sicily in recent days – following her disappearance in Ireland in recent months.
Gardai had been searching for the woman, but were contacted last week by Carabinieri police officers in the city of Palermo after she was found there.
The alarm was raised when the woman was spotted near a local train station. She was dishevelled and some of her clothing appeared to have been ripped, media reports in Sicily say.
The reports also say the woman told investigators she had been drugged and was the victim of an attempted assault.
But it is reported that she clammed up and declined to give any more details. She was taken to hospital for treatment, but media reports say doctors could not find any evidence of an attempted assault.
Carabinieri officials then began an investigation and established that the woman was from Ireland and had been missing from her home in the east of the country – and that gardai were looking for her.
They then contacted gardai to tell them the woman had been found safe and well. It's understood members of the woman's family have now travelled to be with her and bring her home.
We contacted the Garda Press Office for comment today. A spokesman told us: 'Gardaí conducted a missing person investigation for a woman who was reported missing in the Eastern Region .
'Following a number of enquiries, the woman was confirmed to have been located safe and well and the missing person appeal has since been stood down."

Spain holiday horror as Irish tourists battered by gang in late-night ambush
Two Irish tourists were left with facial fractures and other injuries after being attacked by a teenage gang of armed robbers in a Costa del Sol holiday resort. They were assaulted as they walked back to their hotel in the picturesque town of Nerja around 30 miles east of Malaga after a boozy night out. In September last year a 29-year-old Irish holidaymaker ended up in a specialist hospital burns unit after a freak accident at a friend's wedding in the resort. She was seriously injured after being engulfed in flames when her dress caught fire on decorative candles as she was in the bathroom. Fellow guests dialled 999 after finding her semi-conscious at a holiday rental apartment. She was initially taken to a hospital in the nearby city of Malaga where she is understood to have undergone an emergency operation before being transferred to a burns unit at Seville's Virgen del Rocio University Hospital. Former soldier who 'used his vehicle as a weapon' to ram motorist is jailed
A former member of the Defence Forces who 'used his vehicle as a weapon' and drove at another male has been jailed. Derek Donegan, 39, left his victim in fear that he was about to be killed in the horror incident that happened in north Louth in April 2021. At Dundalk Circuit Court, the ex-corporal pleaded guilty to endangerment on April 25, 2021 and was handed a two-and-a half year sentence. Judge Dara Hayes ordered him to serve an identical term after he admitted assaulting his partner causing her harm at a friend's house in Dublin in July last year. The court heard Donegan, of Hyde Park in Dundalk, Co Louth, who has 14 previous road traffic convictions, had an alcohol and cocaine problem. He has quit drink and drugs and has reconciled with his partner. The court previously heard that on Sunday, April 25, 2021, a Seat Leon was rear ended by a Ford Connect van driven by the defendant on the Ballymascanlon roundabout in Louth. Both vehicles pulled over and the drivers got out. Donegan apologised for driving too close but showed no concern about the damage. As the victim took photos of the damage and looked for insurance details, Donegan drove at him, hitting him with his van below the knees. The court heard the victim landed on the bonnet but was 'dumped' onto the road and feared for his life. Donegan sped off and the victim drove after him. When he pulled alongside, the thug rammed his car into a ditch. The victim asked bystanders to call gardai and was treated in hospital for cuts and back pain. In the other offence, he and his partner were leaving a friend's house in Erne Terrace in Dublin where they had drinks. An argument broke out and she told him to go back to Dundalk. However, he walked towards her and struck her in the face. She was treated at hospital for pain and shock. The woman then made a statement of withdrawal to gardai and said she and Donegan have reconciled. In sentencing, Judge Dara Hayes said: 'In the endangerment offence he used his vehicle as a weapon and sought to flee after he struck the injured party's car. 'An aggravating factor for the assault is that it was inter-partner violence and Section 40 of the Domestic Violence Act states to take specific account of that and a higher sentence is required than otherwise. He imposed a total of four and a half years for both offences with the final 18 months suspended and banned Donegan from driving for five years.
