Ringgit rebounds slightly as market anticipates mild US tariffs
At 6 pm, the local note appreciated to 4.2180/2260 against the greenback from Thursday's close of 4.2195/2255.
Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the modest rebound was partly driven by optimism that Washington may settle on a softer set of tariffs as it nears the finalisation of tariffs for selected countries.
"There is speculation that the finalised tariffs could be less severe than the initial proposals announced in early April, which has helped ease some market concerns.
"The ringgit was weaker earlier in the session, slipping to 4.2383, but later recovered to as high as 4.2175 during today's session," he told Bernama.
Nonetheless, Mohd Afzanizam noted that overall sentiment remained cautious, with investors staying on the sidelines as they await greater clarity on trade policy directions and their broader implications.
At the close, the ringgit traded higher against a basket of major currencies.
It rose against the euro to 4.9675/9770 from 4.9756/9827, appreciated against the Japanese yen to 2.9225/9282 from 2.9333/9376, and advanced versus the British pound to 5.7601/7710 from 5.7621/7703 yesterday.
The local note traded mixed against its Asean counterparts.
It improved vis-à-vis the Singapore dollar to 3.3114/3182 from 3.3146/3196, and rose against the Philippine peso to 7.47/7.49 from 7.50/7.51.
However, it slipped against the Thai baht to 13.0302/0609 from 13.0211/0457, and shed against the Indonesian rupiah to 260.6/261.2 from 260.5/261.0 previously.

The Communications Ministry, in a statement today, said Malaysia's participation in WSIS+20 is part of the MADANI Government's ongoing efforts to strengthen an inclusive national communications technology ecosystem aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 'This participation brings various strategic benefits to the country, including global recognition of Malaysia's leadership in expanding rural internet access, communication technology inclusivity, and initiatives to empower ICT literacy among citizens in line with the well-being values of Malaysia MADANI,' the statement said. According to the statement, Malaysia is also using the WSIS platform to showcase key initiatives such as the National Digital Network Plan (JENDELA) and National Information Dissemination Centres (NADI), thereby strengthening its position as a regional leader in communication technology transformation. WSIS is a United Nations platform that brings together global leaders to leverage ICT for sustainable development, covering key components including the WSIS Action Lines – a framework comprising 11 ICT-related focus areas such as infrastructure, capacity building, cybersecurity and enabling environments. In addition, the WSIS Prizes recognise high-impact technological development projects, with 234 winners and 648 champions recognised since the awards were first introduced in 2012. Selangor to roll out circular economy within two years
KLANG: Selangor is expected to implement a circular economy framework within the next two years, says Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari. He said pilot projects, including the SelKitar initiative and an electronic waste (e-waste) recycling programme, are already underway to instil circular economy practices among the public. "We are building up the system gradually. It is not just about earning a few ringgit from recycling. The real challenge is establishing a comprehensive, functioning ecosystem,' he told reporters after launching the 'Plastic-Free Campaign 2025: Series 2' here Sunday (July 6). Amirudin said the circular economy is likely to begin in urban areas such as Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya and Shah Alam, which are suitable testbeds due to their urban infrastructure and urban lifestyle. A circular economy promotes waste reduction by reusing, recycling, upcycling and repurposing materials for as long as possible, thereby preserving resources, reducing emissions and adding economic value. In August 2024, the Housing and Local Government Ministry launched the Solid Waste Circular Economy Action Plan 2025-2035 to guide stakeholders through this transition, focusing on five key pillars, namely governance and legislation, guidelines and procedures, digitalisation and technology, infrastructure and facilities, as well as market development. Meanwhile, Amirudin said Selangor is finalising bylaw amendments across 12 local councils to expand the implementation of the 'No Plastic Bag Day' policy. Foreign Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Amran Mohamed Zin noted the strong turnout signals trust in Malaysia's stewardship of the regional bloc. Over 1,500 delegates, including more than 30 Foreign Ministers from ASEAN and dialogue partner nations, are attending the meetings at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from July 8 to 11.
