Germany charges man suspected of planning attack on Israeli embassy
The suspect, a Russian national identified only as Akhmad E in line with German privacy rules, was arrested on 20 February at the capital's airport as he prepared to board a flight.
He has now been indicted on charges of supporting a foreign terrorist organisation, attempted membership of such a group and preparing a serious act of violence.
Federal prosecutors said in a statement that the suspect initially planned to carry out an attack in Germany, possibly on the Israeli embassy.
He allegedly found instructions for making explosives on the internet, but was unable to pursue the plan because he couldn't get the necessary components.
At the same time, the suspect was allegedly translating propaganda into Russian and Chechen for the jihadist group.
Prosecutors said he intended to join the group in Pakistan to receive military training and that he financed the trip by taking out two contracts for expensive smartphones which he then sold.
He allegedly sent a video declaring loyalty to the group to a suspected IS member outside Germany shortly before his departure.
The indictment was filed earlier this month to a court in Berlin, which will now have to decide whether to send the case to trial.

German transgender Neo-Nazi to serve time in women's prison
Sven Liebich, now known as Marla-Svenja Liebich, has been convicted of right-wing extremist activities, including incitement to hatred, and is due to start a prison sentence soon. The public prosecutor's office in Halle has summoned Liebich to appear at Chemnitz prison. Liebich himself published a corresponding summons to start his sentence in a post on Platform X. According to current plans, he will initially be held in a prison for women. The background to this is a corresponding self-disclosure on gender identity, based on the new regulations of the Self-Determination Act, which came into force in November last year. The reformed law makes it possible to have the gender entry adjusted by means of a personal declaration. Warnings about abuse of new 'self-declaration' law Since the coalition government's plans for the law became known, concerns have repeatedly been raised about possible abuse. During the election campaign, the CDU/CSU clearly took up the issue. Andrea Lindholz, then deputy chairwoman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, declared in April last year that the coalition had "lost its way" with this law. The coalition agreement signed by the SPD and CDU/CSU in May last year merely stated that the Self-Determination Act would be reviewed "by 31 July 2026 at the latest". During the coalition negotiations between the CDU/CSU and SPD, it was therefore not dealt with in the justice working group, but by the negotiators for the "Family" department. According to German tabloid BILD, however, no agreement could be reached there on how to deal with the law. The issue was therefore referred back to the party leaders. The result was merely a vague formulation in the coalition agreement. 'Clear criteria' As Benedikt Bernzen, spokesperson for the public prosecutor's office in Halle, explained to German public broadcaster Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR), the decision on placement is now based on two clear criteria: the officially registered gender, in Marla-Svenja Liebich's case female, and the registered place of residence. As this is in Saxony, the local enforcement plan there applies, which provides for female prisoners to be detained in Chemnitz Prison. However, the Saxon Ministry of Justice emphasised to the local daily Mitteldeutsche Zeitung that additional psychological or medical reports can be used in certain cases. These include, for example, if there is a suspicion that someone may have deliberately changed the gender entry in order to influence the prison conditions. In July 2023, Liebich, then still known as Sven Liebich, was sentenced to one and a half years' imprisonment without probation by the Halle district court. The sentence included incitement to hatred, insult and defamation. Appeals by both Liebich and the public prosecutor's office failed before the Halle district court. Liebich had changed his gender and first name by making a "simple declaration" to the registry office in Schkeuditz in north-west Saxony.

Ukrainian suspected of links to Nord Stream pipeline blasts arrested
A Ukrainian citizen suspected of participating in the undersea explosions in 2022 that damaged the Nord Stream gas pipelines between Russia and Germany has been arrested, German prosecutors said on Thursday. The suspect, identified only as Serhii K. in line with German privacy rules, was arrested overnight in Italy's Rimini province, federal prosecutors said. They added that he is believed to be one of the coordinators of the operation. Explosions on 26 September 2022 damaged the pipelines, which were built to carry Russian natural gas to Germany under the Baltic Sea. The damage added to tensions over the war in Ukraine as European countries moved to wean themselves off Russian energy sources following the Kremlin's full-scale invasion of its neighbour. The explosions ruptured the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, which was Russia's main natural gas supply route to Germany until Moscow cut off supplies at the end of August 2022. They also damaged the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which never entered service because Germany suspended its certification process shortly before Russia invaded Ukraine in February of that year. Russia accused the US of staging the explosions, a charge Washington denies. The pipelines were long a target of criticism by the US and some of its allies, who warned that they posed a risk to Europe's energy security by increasing dependence on Russian gas. In 2023, German media reported that a pro-Ukraine group was involved in the sabotage. Ukraine rejected suggestions it might have ordered the attack and German officials voiced caution over the accusation.

One killed and 14 injured in Russian attacks on western Ukraine
One person was killed and at least 14 injured in Russian strikes on western Ukraine on Thursday, despite recent talks that aimed to hammer out a peace deal in Moscow's nearly four-year war. A strike in the western city of Lviv killed one person and injured three others, Ukraine's Emergency Services said. The region's governor, Maksym Kozytskyi, reported that the blast damaged 26 residential buildings, a kindergarten and several office buildings. At least 11 people had to be relocated as a result of the attack. "Lviv had a loud night. The enemy conducted a combined attack with Shahed drones and missiles," Kozytskyi said. A wave of missile and drones caused fires at a large electronics plant in the city of Mukachevo, as air alerts sounded in the Rivne region, around 304 kilometres west of the capital, Kyiv. Additional explosions were heard in the north-western city of Lutsk. Russia has continued its barrage of strikes against Ukraine despite high-level peace talks focused on finding an end to the war earlier in the week. US President Donald Trump sparked cautious optimism among European leaders by suggesting the US would take part in providing security guarantees in the event of a peace settlement, although he later ruled out putting boots on the ground. Assurances against a future invasion are a key element for Kyiv to agree to a peace deal. Ukraine has asked for Western-backed military assurances to prevent Russia from attacking the country again.
