Investigation underway after Sask. inmate dies in federal custody

The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) says it's investigating after a 42-year-old inmate died while in custody at Saskatchewan Penitentiary in Prince Albert.
In a news release sent Sunday afternoon, CSC says Matthew Scoville had been serving a sentence of two years, seven months and one day since May 26, 2025.
According to CSC, he died on July 11.
The CSC says it has notified the inmate's next of kin and will conduct a review of the circumstances surrounding the death, as per policy.
According to CSC, the police and coroner have also been informed.

(Aaron Reid/CTV News Ottawa) The Ottawa Police Service is reporting a small decrease in the number of thefts and property crimes this year, with Rideau-Vanier and Somerset wards being the hot spots for thefts under $5,000. Police say 19,100 property crimes were reported between Jan. 1 and July 20 this year, down from 19,800 during the same period last year. Police have received 10,700 reports of thefts of $5,000 and under so far this year, down from 11,000 cases between Jan. 1 and July 20, 2024. Of the 10,700 reports of thefts $5,000 and under, there have been 2,378 reports in Rideau-Vanier, which includes the ByWard Market, 1,133 reports in Somerset ward, 844 reports in Kitchissippi, 699 in Capital ward, which includes the Glebe, and 625 in Bay ward. Police have also received 420 reports for thefts under $5,000 in Barrhaven West and 594 cases in College. There have been 1,410 reports of breaks and enters across Ottawa this year, down from 1,440 last year. Statistics available on the Ottawa Police Service's website show there were 27,500 total crimes reported to police between Jan. 1 and July 20, 2025, down from 28,100 crimes during the same period last year. The Ottawa Police Service has seen an increase in violent crimes reported, with 4,770 violent crimes reported since Jan. 1, compared to 4,600 in the same period last year. Police have received 2,520 reports of assaults and 528 sexual violations have been reported. Traffic and road safety There has been an increase in the number of collisions on Ottawa roads this year. Ottawa police say there have been 11,000 collisions reported in Ottawa so far this year, up from 10.700 collisions during the same period in 2024. A total of 20,620 traffic tickets have been issued by officers so far this year.

Two homes damaged by fire in Chatham

Damage is estimated upwards of $600,000 after a fire in Chatham. Around 10:15 p.m. on Tuesday, crews responded to 87 Gray St. for a fire involving two homes. Firefighters from Stations #1 and #2 - Chatham, arrived on scene to find both homes 'actively involved in fire.' No injuries were reported, and the Ontario Fire Marshal has been notified. Chatham-Kent fire inspectors are also on scene while the site is being held by police for an investigation.

Pedestrian struck in Barrie

Police are at Innisfil Street after a pedestrian was struck by a car. PHOTO: CTV NEWS/BARRIE A pedestrian was struck by a car in downtown Barrie Wednesday. Barrie Police Service received a call at around 8:30 a.m. notifying them of the incident. 'Police are currently on scene investigating. (A) minor injury is reported,' said Peter Leon, communications coordinator with Barrie police. Police are asking drivers to avoid the area of Marshall and Innisfil streets in the city's centre core.
