Ryan McMahon aims to propel Rockies to sweep of Twins

Reuters2 days ago
July 20 - The Colorado Rockies will look to turn their first home series win of 2025 into a three-game series sweep on Sunday when they host the Minnesota Twins in Denver.
The Rockies recorded a 6-4 win over the Twins on Friday and a 10-6 victory on Saturday.
"That's definitely a nice building block," Colorado interim manager Warren Schaeffer said. "We want series wins at home. Nobody wanted it to take this long to get it, but it doesn't matter. We got it right now."
Colorado's last home series sweep was against the Texas Rangers on May 10-12, 2024.
"I feel we're capable of this, even more," said Rockies third baseman Ryan McMahon, who homered on Saturday night.
"It's just coming out there and making sure we're doing it every single day, having a process of how we're going to get it done, instead of just talking about what we want to get done."
McMahon has homered in consecutive games to bolster his trade stock.
"It drives my wife crazy," McMahon said, per MLB.com, of the trade talk. "I try not to look at it, dude. If I'm going somewhere else, I'm going to do the same stuff that I do here."
Ezequiel Tovar and Hunter Goodman also homered for Colorado on Saturday. Tovar's two-out, three-run blast in the fifth inning broke a 3-3 tie. Goodman, who also drove in three runs, belted a two-run homer in the eighth.
The Rockies are 12-36 at home this season.
Colorado second baseman Ryan Ritter likely will miss a few days after requiring three stitches on one of the fingers of his right hand. He sustained the injury after taking a pitch off the finger during a successful sacrifice bunt attempt on Saturday night.
The Rockies are scheduled to send right-hander German Marquez (3-10, 5.57 ERA) to the mound on Sunday.
He has been stingy in two career starts against the Twins, posting a 2-0 record and 0.71 ERA. In Marquez's most recent start against Minnesota on June 24, 2022, he surrendered only three hits in 7 2/3 scoreless innings but walked five and struck out two in the 1-0 victory.
Colorado will have to solve right-hander Joe Ryan (9-4, 2.72) to complete the sweep.
Ryan is 1-0 against the Rockies in his career two starts but with an 8.10 ERA. His last start against them came Sept. 29, 2023, when he gave up six runs and eight hits in five innings with a walk and six strikeouts in a 7-6 Minnesota win. He did not figure into the decision.
The Twins have lost three games in a row.
"The bottom line is we've got to play better baseball, and we haven't been able to do that consistently this year," Minnesota shortstop Carlos Correa said. "There's 60-some games left (64) and we've got to figure out a way to put ourselves in a better position. And everybody in this clubhouse, this coaching staff, every player in here, we've got to do better. We're not doing a good job."

Pete Crow-Armstrong (knee) out of Cubs' lineup Monday

July 22 - All-Star center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong is out of the Chicago Cubs' lineup Monday night due to soreness in his right knee. Cubs manager Craig Counsell told reporters before Monday's home game against the Kansas City Royals that Armstrong tweaked his knee Sunday against the Boston Red Sox. "He just banged it up (on a slide)," Counsell told reporters. "Woke up (today) and it felt a little swollen. So we're just going to try to give him the day today. And hopefully back in there tomorrow." It marks just the second time this season the National League leader in Wins Above Replacement has not played. Seiya Suzuki made his debut in center field in Crow-Armstrong's stead. The 23-year-old Crow-Armstrong has been one of the majors' most improved players this season. After compiling a .237 batting average with 10 homers and 27 stolen bases in 123 games as a rookie, the lefty has produced a .270 batting average with 26 homers, 72 RBIs and 28 stolen bases this season. He's the only player in the bigs with at least 25 homers and 25 steals. --Field Level Media

‘Knee cooked': Nick Kyrgios limps along road to recovery ahead of grand slam return

Nick Kyrgios has come through his first match since March, and just his sixth this year, completing almost an hour on court in a men's doubles defeat at the ATP Tour's DC Open. Partnering French veteran Gael Monfils, and playing in front of NBA star Kevin Durant, Kyrgios had a tough opening draw against third seeds Edouard Roger-Vasselin and Hugo Nys. Monfils was broken in the opening game and while Kyrgios held his first service match both players were then broken to lose the first set 6-2. The second was much the same. Monfils being broken early and Kyrgios late as they dropped it 6-2 again. Kyrgios grabbed at his knee throughout the match and was seen limping towards the end as he continued his preparation for a grand slam return at the US Open. 'Knee cooked but fans still fucked with us,' he later posted on Instagram. Nonetheless, just being on court was something of an achievement for the 30-year-old Australian who has been dogged by injury since reaching the Wimbledon final in 2022. Kyrgios last played doubles at the Australian Open in January, retiring in the second set of his opening match with himself and Thanasi Kokkinakis 7-5 3-2 down to fellow Aussies James Duckworth and Aleksandar Vukic. The former world No 13 subsequently played three singles matches, retiring when 7-6 (8-6) 3-0 down in the first round at Indian Wells in March. The wrist he had an operation on in September 2023 was still an issue. However, he reached the second round at the Miami Open later in the month, beating McKenzie McDonald for his first singles win since 2022. In the second round he lost to Karen Khachanov and this outing in the US capital was his first match since, as injuries continued to be an an issue. Kyrgios has a current ATP ranking of 640, but has activated his protected ranking of 21 to be included on the official entry list for the US Open. 'I wanted to play singles, but six weeks ago I had a bit of a niggle with my knee,' Kyrgios said. 'So it's just going to take a bit more time.' Earlier on Monday in a sweltering Washington, Chris O'Connell went down 6-3 6-2 to American Ethan Quinn, ranked five places lower at world No 82, while later, Vukic takes on big-serving Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. Alex de Minaur and Alexei Popyrin are also in the ATP 500 event but have received first-round byes.
